After watching Sandy criticizing gaps in previous videos, when we picked up our model Y I decided not to look too closely and didn't mention to my wife any minor defects. We've had the car almost two years and love it.
I worked at Tesla for over a year. We had an Model 3 on order. I wanted to see how the Model 3 were built. I was very disappointed and I also talk with many co-workers. They simplity don't care about quality. The management only care about how many we can built in a shift.
@@wayneyd2 I certainly agree with that viewpoint. Right now they're in such high demand they have no incentive to make them better. Once the demand goes down and there's plenty of competition then Tesla will have to make them better.
I had a similar minor gap and a paint goober on the roof rail and was told if you don’t take it you will go back into the Que so i took a chance with notating all the issues and let service take care of it. I am happy to report they did take care of all the issues ! I had the car wrapped afterwards and 2 years later its holding up great.
@@eugeniustheodidactus8890 It surely tells that whatever the states of the car, it will sell. As an investor, it's all I need to know. But I'm not a TSLAQ dumb dumb...
@@eugeniustheodidactus8890 not a threat lol, the reason is that the demand is high enough to support such. People literally flip Tesla's the demand is so high. Dealerships takes vehicles with such imperfections and fix or hide them depending on costs to do so. Dealerships literally lie to you all the time about the vehicles condition. You can literally walk about a dealership parking lot with a device to detect paint thickness and fine where panels had paint defects and instead of fixing it they painted over the defective paint job over the whole panel
@@eugeniustheodidactus8890 painting over paint defects is also illegal BTW, because the surface isn't properly sealed and has trapped air/moisture. Which will lead to premature paint failure or in case of metal parts, complete destruction of that car part.
We had our 2022 MY delivered at the end of January and it was pretty much perfect. Admittedly, I'm not as critical about gaps as Sandy, but even so, they are all very consistent and the paint was very good too. The only issue we have had was a rattle under the rear in the first week which was taken care of with a quick service appointment. Other than that, we love our MY.
Had a LOL moment when she was talking about the slow windows "It needs extra lubrication in order to get up". I can't believe that wasn't scripted /deliberate!
I like the attitude that if it works right and is water tight the other problems can be overlooked. Picked up an old truck a while back. The doors rattle, the headlights are fogged, there are dents one place or another, but the body is generally straight and it runs. Good enough for me.
Both front windows on mine do it too, have to put it up a couple times before it stays up. I figured it has to do something with the window sensor. Also figure that it will change as the seals wear in. I'll have to try the window calibration. For reference: MYP built Feb 2nd, took delivery Feb 16th.
@@1472fred same here .. sold my 2019 long range 3 for $56k and paid $54k out the door for my 2022 that I took delivery of 3 weeks ago. Build quality and fit and finish are perfect. My 2019 was good and never gave me any issues .. but I definitely feel my 2022 is much improved. Thank you TESLA!
I need to add that my wife just got her model Y. Built in Fremont within the last month I looked it over and over and could find nothing to complain about. We need to find out why this white model y had so many issues and that they can be fixed.
I took delivery of my Fremont made Model YLR one week ago upgraded with white interior. Only problem noted so far is that on sunny days the sun shines thru front side windows & bounces off the white dash directly onto the outside side mirrors adversely impacting visibility when using the mirrors. I will need to have the front side windows tinted to at least 30% to resolve this issue.
Sandy, this is off-topic, I had the same little cough you have for many years. Finally found out it was caused by drinking soft drinks (Diet Pepsi) with Aspartame. I stopped drinking anything with Aspartame and my cough went away. It's been years now and I'm still 100% clear.
22:44 same. from memory, it appears they got rid of dead spaces or made the parts sit tightly close together. this is the type of update that we won't find on twitter or anywhere
I’m surprised, I have a 2019 model 3 which seemed at the time no two were the same. Going through the Tesla center you could find gap issues etc on all the model 3 cars. Some were worse than others, but we were taught to scrutinize the cars prior to accepting them which got customers nit picking maybe too much. Anyway, fast forward to the model Y, and three times when I was bringing my referrals to pick up their Teslas, I closely examined all the model Y cars on the lot, and couldn’t find any with the model 3 deficiencies. Thought Tesla had cleaned up the build process. Guess we’ll see how the Berlin cars are. Still say my Model 3 is the best thing I have ever bought.
All my life I have owned Mopar, from 1967 to 2004, and I can tell you, function is what counts, when it comes down to it, durability of components, overall drivetrain and suspension function and smooth design is what kept me coming back to Mopar. From A total of four Slant Six engines /A904 3 speed transmissions with the 1981, having Lock up torque converter from 1978 on, from 1967 to the last 1981 with Hydraulic Valve Lifters, I have not encountered any hardier engine design, second up are my two 3.8 L V6 engines /41TE Transmissions. The one has 217K and runs fine with no rebuilds, just light maintenance on it. My two 318 engines and two 360 engines were also great, although for the first time ever, I had a transmission failure in the 1999 Dodge B2500 Full size van, coupled to my 360. Which is not a bad experience. Then in 2008, Chrysler walked away from great reliability for 1 extra MPG, with the overly complicated, 3.6L that has roller bearing bottomed lifters that eat their cams, a plastic Oil Filter adapter that mechanics can look at wrong and cracks, a 6 speed 62TE transmission that was not hardy, with no ATF dipstick, and leaky transmission cooling hose crimps, and to add icing on this cake, the Microprocessor based, Fuse and circuit breaker box from hell, which can, because they didn’t move it into the interior, gets corroded, and has some cheap soldered in relays that die. When the microprocessor loses it, mind, the car acts possessed, windshield wipers activated when ignition is off, random horn blowing, fuel pump circuits not coming on, leading to no start conditions. I’ll take panel gaps that do not interfere with function anytime. I still own my 2003 and 2004 Chrysler Town and Country minivans, and eventually, I hope to go to Tesla, as I see the old Chrysler simplicity In design mantra Mopar used to employ along with the 1960’s style straightforward engineering we saw erode away in the late 2000’s when Fiat got their hands around Mopar’s throat and started squeezing hard.
Thanks for the insights. My creator's 2012 Caravan has bizarre electrical gremlins: radio blares on/off; buttons work/don't; strange warnings from sensors. Time to go Tesla.
FIAT lost a life time loyal customer with me... I traded in my FIAT 500X for my Tesla Model Y Long Range on Septermber 2, 2021...I will NEVER go back to FIAT, even if they do come out with electric cars that would suit my needs... That last FIAT was the worst FIAT I ever had, the one before, the Fiat Bravo Diesel was wonderful, but this 500X was under powered and had issues all the time, the orange Motor warning sign has been on about 75% of the time. Wheels almost falling off, Interior panels falling off for no reason, Fuel consumption way worse than advertised, Cruise control not working 80% of the time unable to fix, infotainment completely useless, (only used the radio and USB media, BT connection with the phone was OK though), voice control did not work, navigation out of date from day one, and unable to update, used Waze on my phone instead... and on and on and on... So glad with my Model Y, where everything simply works, and no issues at all, only have been to a service center to install the tow hitch. With gasoline prices going through the roof (about 10-12 dollars per gallon here), makes me even more happy I have made the transition to Tesla. Pretty sure there are tens of thousands of former loyal FIAT owners now trainsitioned to Tesla and never go back.
Laycee aka Miss GoElectric has some amazing videos on her YT channel. She deserves many more subscribers based on the content & quality video production. She also has a very unique insight in to the whole automotive industry involving vehicles manufacturers from around the world.
I got my Model Y in 53 days to Cleveland Ohio. It seems like they are prioritizing Model Y deliveries in the Great Lakes region. I wonder if they are trying to balance load on the supercharger and service center networks?
Wow, as soon as you the in the frunk you can see how tidy, minimal and perfectly designed the Tesla cables and coolant lines are. There is hardly any long runs at all.
I used to sell cars. Back in the day you can fly a plane through a lot of the panel gaps in a car. No one in my experience gave a shit about panel gaps before tesla came along.
@@RogerM88 Ferraris were notorious for panel gaps, but still the most desired cars ever. I don't say they are not important, but so many other things, hold more value.
Wrong! Totally wrong! Stop lying! People have always checked their cars before taking possession of it! There is also a reason why people checks the paint and other state of the cars they buys. Troll!!!
I almost ordered the same but no track mode was a deal breaker, so am now the owner of a model 3 performance. As soon as track mode on the model Y becomes a reality, I shall trade.
14:50 Sandy has it right about the window. THe anti-pinch function is not properly calibrated and due to weight of the window, the systems sees it as is crushing an arm or something. If it does only in Auto up mode but not in Manual up mode, this is the problem
Same issue on mine. Service recalibrated my windows, which didn't fix anything. They ordered new motors and regulators and just finish installing this last week. We will see.
The panel gaps and fitments on my 2020 June Model S were not this bad (but not good either) The Service manager (a former tech) and one other Techs had it all fixed in 30 minutes in the parking lot. I just don't understand why Tesla put cars like this into inventory.
Because they don’t care about quality. They want to get the sale asap and the customer can deal with it later or whenever tesla has time to “fix” their mistake.
If it is fixable in 30 minutes, the question to be asked should be: why doesn’t the Tesla garage fix these gaps and whatnot before handing it to the customer. After all a happy customer makes a happy camper and he would be more inclined to recommend buying a Tesla.. And we would finally get rid of all these RU-vid and media panel gap yadiyadiya bs.
@@eddieke4751 if you haven’t figured it out. Tesla people are not car people. They were likely driving a 10-15 year old car before finally upgrading to a Tesla under the promise of life changing self actualization. So these people only care that they are able to do car-eoke and other gimmicks that they can show off to their non tesla owning friends to prove they’re better than them. Tesla knows this and will simply ship garbage out the door because most customer base won’t notice. They take the chance that if they do notice, they might bring it back in. But I’ve seen so many teslas where I point out a critical flaw and they say “wow I never even noticed that” Tesla is banking on owners not giving a crap or too lazy to complain because they are too amazed at the iPad.
Clearing the throat and having dry cough, looks that he is having acid reflux. An antiacid like omeprazole for a week and avoiding milk and derivatives, tomatoes, onions, chocolate etc will help.
Thank you Sandy and Miss Go Electric! After test driving a Y, I gladly would’ve taken this in that short of a wait. That’s unheard of. The windows are a material complaint, and hopefully they don’t need to swap motors/sensors
Picked up my Tesla Y this afternoon on 29th street in GR. love it ! Thank you for sharing all this info on the Y. I appreciate your input so much ! I checked it and so did my son & grandsons.
As a Tesla shareholder, it is really frustrating to see made in Fremont EVs, with the panel gaps still, as I have seen many European videos of the MIC Model Y being delivered and I have not seen many, if any gaps issues, so I suspect that the California factory is the issue here, so cannot wait to see the Texas made Model Ys, after they have had some time to ramp up properly.
It is a Fremont thing .. however I took delivery of 2022 Model 3 LR 3 weeks ago and fit and finish is absolutely perfect. I think Fremont build quality has improved big time but still some work left to do it seems. The new factories will not have these issues.
You will not get good panle gaps with the time they have to build the car. I cant find any wrong with my panel gaps on my Lexus LS, thats because they have 6 hours to work on panel gaps.
@@epoxy1710 there is little to no time for any rework or fit and finish on Tesla vehicle. Toyota Lexus, Porsche, etc build their end of line to do exactly that. But that was never Tesla intention
@@benjaminkessler8169 Probably.. guess they just count on the service centers to rectify small issues under warranty. I'm lucky that I have a service center 10 minutes away, so getting my trunk-lid adjusted was a very minor annoyance. I can imagine other people who live a long ways away are probably bothered more by that. I hope Tesla does mobile service for door adjustments and such. And hopefully the giga-castings and changes in manufacturing at the new factories make the panel-gap problems go away. If I were Miss Go Electric, I would definitely schedule a service appointment to get those panels fixed. They will 100% fix this no problem.
In 1965 on the Janesville Chevy truck line one of the quality guys walked the line with a piece of 2 x 4 about 30" long. He'd slam the moveable panels on the 2 x to torque them into plane with the fixed panels.
I'm a Model S owner but I think the Y is the best looking of the bunch. It looks like it was a Friday afternoon build, I can't wait till they get production in line with demand an don't have to rush production so much.
For the window rolling up issue, is the trim, it gets sticky and the sensors think there is something stuck... The mobile tech put some window glass wax on my 2018 Model 3 and that fixes it for a good year and a half, however it comes back sometimes when it gets sticky. I honestly think Tesla needs to either change the rubber trim's compound to make it not sticky or reduce the sensor's sensitivity a little. :P
Been waiting 7 months for my Model Y ( east coast ) but now perhaps I am glad that my delivery keeps getting pushed back. Maybe Giga Austin can figure out how to build a vehicle without fit and finish issues by the time I am supposed to take "communion" at the church of Tesla.
Lacy, I think Sandy is correct about window issue. I have a 2020 Y and have had the same thing happen to me on two occasions. Window would go up and immediately come back down about a quarter of the way. This happen twice over a week. I think the first time I just got out locked it, got back in and was ok, the second time I re-booted and it has been fine since.
In our case, the window stops short and has even stopped responding to presses a few times. I'm repeating what the Tesla service person said to me when he came out for the warranty repair.
24:17 im impressed. im hating on Tesla lately due to added cost of the mobile charger/cable but this is impressive. I think there is a possibility for front to be just a huge frunk like that of F150 Lightning
There are black dampeners on the hood and trunk that you can twist to adjust the gaps. For the truck, It’s behind and to the left and right towards the exterior.
Thanks Sandy and Laycee. Definitely worth watching and learning as always. Laycee, I'm curious if you asked Tesla if they can fix the panel gap and other issues? Maybe they can fix at least some of them? Worth a try, especially if you plan on adding PPF and/or ceramic protection. BTW, your car is gorgeous and I'm looking forward to our white TMY LR by January (opted for the black interior though). We got the hitch on order too! PS Hope the Munro Live crowd signs up for Laycee's Miss GoElectric channel.
16:38 her response is golden. I mean she's very practical and not acting like entitled for all perfection in things, as long as they do what they were supposed to do. A good person, understanding and acting in good faith. Only with such supportive people, there will be real progress in the right direction much quickly. Respect.
Sandy is an apologist for Tesla. That ripple in the dash which every driver has to see 100% of the time while driving is an abomination. Just about every gap they looked at was bad and Sandy was still thrilled with the car. Slap a different name on the vehicle and I think we would have gotten a different review.
@@jcharais even Mrs. Munro looked impressed with the build quality of Mercedes-Benz EQS, and both own a Rivian now. Not a surprise she stays away from Tesla awhile.
With some much of the engineering going on in-house, they can quickly make changes. With so much talk about supply chain issues, hopefully they can continue to avoid those problems.
I have no problems in my Model 3 windows that are laminated, and they have no issue. The laminated glass is not heavy enough to stop them from going up, Sandy is correct that its likely the sensor to keep from breaking fingers when it closes on them.
wrong, it's called a defect, you do realize power windows are in use by the millions and millions of vehicles, with no issues, this is a new vehicle, with a design defect. Poorly executed, poorly made, poorly assembled, wonder why the Benz he had didn't have windows that didn't work, or door gaps like this, hmmmm, how much does this POS cost, it's not made to the price they charge
I’ve noticed that when I’m driving and close the window, if I hit a bump the window stops going up. If have to pull the button again to close the windows.
$10k over sticker is insane, it’s starting to become pretty obvious that the legacy auto dealer networks are going to bankrupt their own suppliers with their insane greed.
Maybe Hyundai should watch and take notes. I remember when the Kia niro came out and I was seriously looking at it, but dealer was trying to sell me something else, even if it was 10-12,000 less! I had purchased Tesla stock well before then, but bought more after!

I could never be bothered by any of those alignment imperfections so long as everything works without self-damage. To me the value of the vehicle is in its technical capabilities. Glad she seems to have a realistic viewpoint.
The problem has always been inconsistency with the body panels and paint. Some are great, some are awful. My suggestion is thoroughly check it out at delivery. Some paint issues may not be fixed later on and be blamed on the owner. Not all panels can be adjusted by service - I had a right headlight sticking out 1/4" and they could not adjust it.
25:00 lol i'll take delivery tomorrow in exchange for some panel gaps. But with all honesty, If i really cared, i wouldn't accept delivery - clearly they pulled it out of the dumpster for her.
@5:32: Sandy: "can you just open the charging port?". Sandy you should know this! Just push on it with your finger and if the car is unlocked it will pop open. No need for the app
Miss Go Electric seems awesome. Doesn't get caught up on things that don't matter i.e. panel gaps. The things that do matter are safety, drives well, and that the windows will go up. Hopefully the windows are resolved. One last thing, Dealership model sucks!
Very much appreciate the commentary of the Y updates observed. I have to wonder if Sandy’s wife laughed at his joke at the end on “women’s sportsmanship.” Most of the women I know, without being a Munro Live consistent viewer, would have had a less than positive reaction. Just an observation.
That is how she got it so fast. She would be waiting half a year at least for the car otherwise. The question is can the service department fix these issues?
My first Tesla was Model 3 from Fremont and was perfect alignment. Believe there was issue with air-cooling system - they had to fix it 3 times. Traded that in for Model Y, and everything was perfect - also from Fremont. Looks like totally different cooling system. Model 3 was 2020 and Y is 2022.
"It needs extra lubrication to get it up" -- I completely expected this, nay, demanded to hear this, from a video titled Sandy takes a peek under Miss GE's frunk.
She’s right. If they have rejected deliveries, they try to match with an existing orders. You never know how picky the person who rejected it is. If you get a quick delivery like this, take extra time at delivery to take note of the issues you find. If it’s cosmetic, then take photos and talk with the delivery person to make sure they can address the issues. I wonder how many times some of these vehicles are rejected. I also wonder if once rejected the vehicle is worked on at all or if they just call the next person. We ordered a performance Y lease. We were offered one right away but didn’t have EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment) ready so opted to wait. Not sure I want to rip out the frunk to see the build revision but I’m so curious now. It should be here within a month.
It's a great car overall. I would however let Tesla work on the panel gaps you have. A lot of the ones out of Fremont are perfect with no gaps. But at this price Tesla should fix this (they can afford it!).
She made a good comment in saying ".. thats the trade off for the 1 week delivery.." . There is nothing wrong to ask at Tesla. Maybe some gaps can be easily fixed. Then for sure they would be willing. And if its is very difficult they should document it in case there are problems coming up in a few years.
That dip in the center of the dash board is in my MYLR that I took delivery December 24, 2021. However, I took delivery of a MYP June 18th and the fit&finish and the dashboard are much much better than the MYLR. Not sure why.
The US built Tesla models are known for poor panel gap build quality. Other Giga Factories have a better build quality. Thanks for the update as always Sandy & Miss Go.
I have a year and a half year old MY-P and I just got notified of my new Austin built same model ready to start the delivery process. I was going to cancel the order due to feeling poor with the stock down so much, but you guys have got me thinking it may be worth the hassle of switching everything (selling this one, re-financing new one, etc.). I just love the fact that the new one will be so much lighter. I'll wait to see real specs though. I want to get improved range and 0-60 performance. There is no reason why the new version should not be at least 400 lbs lighter and a bit faster with 350 miles of range. It has to be better or I'm just going to wait for the CT.
2022 VINs started in November 2021 (which is typical for all makes, and many start even earlier). I expect the fact it has laminated glass indicates it was made in March 2022 or later. There is a decal in the driver door frame that indicates the actual month of manufacturer.
Lacey, you are an amazing person and and absolute joy to see! I just wish that Fremont assembly job was better. I think that Austin is going to show Fremont how to assemble a car body.
I hope people would also look for gaps and stuff like these on other brands, my cousin got a civic the other day and the gaps were worse than my 2021 MY..
I wonder if the owner has performed the Calibrating Windows ritual as described in the Owner's Manual. Under Opening and Closing there is a page for Windows. At the bottom of that page are the instructions.
On our Fremont built Y, now 1 month old, doesn't have any of the panel gap issues nor any issues with the windows closing. It's about as perfect of a car as I could imgine. My close friend has a 1 year old Y, and while very good, we did notice one minor panel gap variance. I don't think anyone would notice unless you pointed it out. Otherwise, it's been solid and she has had zero issues.
It really shows the tesla garbage quality control even tho they have been making the same exact car for years without any variations or any different trims lol….
There is a way to reset the sensors for the window. I had the same issue. I forgot how to. I think open the window completely and close it completely. Window opens a little bit every time you open the door
id guess sandy is right about the window sensor. the other thing it could be, due to part shortage, they may have went to older models parts bin. early model s had similar issues with window regulators. it uses a metal spring on plastic part, and the plastic parts break making the window unable to go all the way up. you can inch it up with 30 small clicks but if you try full it goes up a bit then falls back down and wont ever make it up. gruber motors makes a metal replacement for $19 that gives proper resistance to the spring and will be a lifelong fix. hope that helps 👍
Looking at electric myself and this whole charging over retail is pissing me off to say it nicely. Tesla's parts availability and build quality still makes me really hesitant. But I'm not spending 10-20k more then MSRP for a mach e.
Real build quality, for a car is its internal components, drivetrain, HVAC, software, autonomy. Also, build quality also includes torsional rigidity etc. Tesla focuses on these real metrics, which are often not visible to the customer.
Most people paying over MSRP are buying cancelled orders off the dealer lots. There are some dealers that are tacking on markups for ordered vehicles, but I think it's rare overall. Unfortunately the few bad apples reflect poorly on the manufacturers. The key is to do your homework by making sure that you're buying from a good dealer (check the car forums), and ideally get it in writing that they will be selling at MSRP. Most dealerships are not adding markups to people who have been waiting for several months though. The markups are usually for skipping the line.
I have been looking at trading in my Model 3 and the KIA EV6 or Hyundai IONIQ5 is probably my deposit. The two year wait time means it's all theoretical, and also, there are probably changes to the market - that markup attempt goes to a different vehicle, new models available from the majors, Tesla finally learns how to do QA and customer service... will happen.
@@archigoel How would you know that?? If they cant bother to get visible panel gaps fixed.. who knows what was missed under the skin.. Like that dip in the dashboard... That will be EXPENSIVE to get fixed afterwards. Sorry, but bad panel gaps is an indicator of rushed production and lack of QC and inspection after the build. When this car ages all this will lead to squeaks and rattles that are not really fixable.
@@archigoel This is a great point, panel gaps are easy fixes and not really that obvious to the eye compared to the engineering your getting remember ford, gm and pretty much every auto maker fought hard to not go electric, and it shows how far they are from the technology side.

It seems that Fremont has some issues, I have ordered a blue one from China or Germany (since I live in Europe) and the build quality should be flawless
