Thank you Jerry for pointing out the differences in the products! Love your sand! I am still looking for the black volcanic sand I bought from you many years ago! Kids love it.

Hi. My kids love the Mojave sand. Question: I recently watched a video of a woman who cleaned and “sanitized” her sand. She repeatedly rinsed her sand in a bucket of water to remove debris (e,g, leaves twigs, etc.) by pouring out the debris until removed. She then put the sand on cookie sheets and baked it at 275 degrees. Your thoughts?

Would 70% alcohol spray be considered disinfecting then?

Hi - Ruya Thanks for the question and yes 70% alcohol spray is excellent for disinfecting. In fact, it is my preferred method. The biggest caution of course is that it is flammable so make sure there are no open flames around from candles, the oven and even a match or lighter. One other interesting point is the % alcohol is also critical. I can't recall the research reference but it was a good one - for some reason higher formulations (90% alcohol is the most common) and the lower 60% concentration are not as effective at 70%. I know the 90% is counterintuitive but the research was very conclusive. A final point which I mentioned in the video but is also critical to say again is what they call the 'resident time'. That is the amount of time to keep the surface you are disinfecting wet. Most every product has this listed on the back label. A BIG mistake that is commonly made is people wet the surface and then wipe it dry thinking this is the proper way. That is okay if you are wiping down a dirty countertop or cleaning a window but when disinfecting, it requires a totally different procedure and that is to keep the surface 'wet' for the time specified on the label. DO NOT wipe dry or in your case using spray, make sure the sure the surface stays wet for ten seconds. It is this residence time that kills the virus and bacteria. Hope this helps - The Jurassic Sandman Geologist Jerry
