Hey, Guys I recently visited one of the most famous and Asia's most visited national park named SANJAY GANDHI NATIONAL PARK which is located in BORIVALI, MUMBAI.
Sanjay Gandhi National Park is an 87 km2 (34 sq mi) protected area in Mumbai, Maharashtra State in India. It was established in 1969 with headquarters at Borivali.
The 2400-year-old Kanheri caves sculpted by monks out of the rocky cliffs, lie within the park. The rich flora and fauna of Sanjay Gandhi National Park attract more than 2 million visitors every year.
When in Mumbai, a visit to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) becomes imperative. The national park is also called the lungs of the city and is the only national park in the world known to be present within a city’s premises. Far from the bustle of the city, the environment inside the national park is completely peaceful and offers serenity.
Spread across a total area of 103 square kilometres, the governing body of the national park is the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the footfall of visitors each year rounds up to a little over 2 million. The entire area of the national park forms approximately 20% of Mumbai’s geographical area.
Sightseeing points at Sanjay Gandhi National Park are Joggers park, Bonatical Garden, Gandhi Tekdi, Van Rani (Toy train), Boating, Play garden, Kanheri Caves, Tiger Safari, Lion Safari, etc.

Kanheri Caves is one of the famous protected archaeological sites that is paradise for trekkers, history buffs, wildlife lovers and nature enthusiasts. Travelers have to trek through the dense forests for about 7 km to reach this spectacular cave complex that is situated at the outskirts of Mumbai. This massive cave complex lying on the Konkan coast boasts about 109 rock shelters. The history of Kanheri Caves is about 2000 years old as it dates back to the 1st century. Founded by the Monks of Sapora, this site in Kanheri was developed as a Buddhist settlement till the 3rd century. The place remained a prominent monastic settlement till the 10th century after which it gradually began to lose its glory. The inscriptions found at the site depict that the sprawling cave complex was established from donations and land grants by the Kings, ministers, traders, monks and administrative officers who were the patrons of Buddhism.
In all, Kanheri Caves is a must visit place in Mumbai where travelers can grab a view of Buddhist sculptures, paintings, innumerable statues of Lord Buddha, Stupas etc.
