I like how the backstories in One Piece have more meat to them beyond making you sad, even when it's sad they end up carrying positive lessons from them. -In Luffy's backstory we are shown the importance of role models and how you don't have to put your life on the line for every little thing that happens to you, but that it's on the moment they harm people you hold dear, he also learns his reckless actions have consequences (Shanks' arm), yet it's those experiences that make him grow into who he is today. -In Zoro's we learn it's important to be careful while going up or down the stairs. (His friendship with Kuina and their vow to be the greatest swordsmen along with her premature death are what gives him strength and the will to accomplish both of their dreams and to never get himself killed until that happens.) -In Usopp's, lies are depicted as a way to have harmless fun and cheer up other people (also his way to cope over his dad not being there when his mom died) in contrast to Kuro who lies only for his own sake, Usopp as much as he lies still carries a heart of gold and is willing to die and even turn his lies into truth for the sake of others. -In Sanji's we see yet again the importance of role models and how they shape you as a person, tho unlike Luffy, Sanji's love for his parental figure made him stop following his dream due to guilt over Zeff's leg, which is why it's so important that he meets Luffy and Zoro, two people who have it imprinted on their heads to follow their dreams regardless of how dangerous the path may be, if they die trying to achieve their dream then they are okay with that. All of their backstories have a heavy focus on found family and obtaining the courage to follow your dreams and laugh in spite of tragedy and that's a wonderful message to have imo. edit: might be worth mentioning the manga starts with luffy's backstory while the anime moved it to a later point, all the core themes and lessons we see throughout the series were already shown to us nicely the moment the story started.
the live action used the manga version where he did actually eat it, they changed it for the anime due to thinking that the eating his own leg would be too much to show on tv
Not really. The live action continued with the eat his leg, but they didn't showed him cutting his leg. So they also thought it was really gruesome. In the anime, they didn't wanted to show the actual part, so they found another way of him cutting it, but less gruesome. In the end, both anime and live action decided to not go the manga part, they only decided different ways to do it.
I love how Oda uses these big confrontations with other pirates to draw an outline around the way Luffy sees the world. His idea of treasure was contrasted against buggy. His idea of loyalty was contrasted against Kuro. His idea of power was contrasted against don Krieg and with Arlong is all of this together
This is it. East Blue is a showcase of Luffy's brand of Piracy. What he deems as treasure, as power, as friends. Grandline Paradise is then a test of his worth as a pirate and as a captain. As a long running series, it's really well made
I completely agree but for Kuro I think the stronger contrast is their ambition since Kuro has grown tired of having a name on the seas and Luffy is trying to be the biggest name on seas.
Aside from the anime censoring how Zeff lost his leg (he did eat it in the manga like in the LA), the anime also cut a small detail in the flashback, which is Zeff hitting a man from his own crew who stole food from the ship they attacked.

Just so you know, the correct version for Zeff's leg is the live action's one. In the manga, Zeff did eat his leg, it's just that we have a page were Zeff cut his leg with a rock and the anime found it to graphic for kids so they changed the whole thing, I prefer the choice of the live action to keep the idea and just offscreened it
Just wanted to say we do get to see these "side characters" again from time to time. Whenever some world changing event happens in the story they usually show reactions to it from characters we have met along the way, like in the live action when we got to see Kaya and some others reacting to Luffy's bounty poster, so we do see some of them again. Some get shown more frequently than others depending on their relevance, but we do get to see Usopp's crew again when they are older working hard on acheiving their own dreams. :)
Makes sense tbh, it was already pretty intense as a panel but to imagine it animated and show the action, having to animate all of that gushing blood. It would be crazy intense
One of the stupidest moments in LA. I still don't understand why they voiced it there. In the case of Zoro, they reduced the time frame so that it would be less fantastic, and then they just repeated it, while making terrible makeup, without even trying to convey what someone who had been sitting almost without food for months would look like…
@@JohnSmithVGA so they should have done what? Show them entirely CGI and go against the minimal use of CGI that had been the previous precedent? Literally starve the actors? It's an adaptation ... Limitations are something that has to be considered and cannot be avoided
@@Shiftarus Apparently you don’t know what good make-up artists and the right shot can do. Even without CGI it can be done well. But more importantly, if they couldn’t do something like that, then maybe they shouldn’t talk about exactly how much time they spent there, like they did in the anime? Moreover, this was done against the backdrop of a change in the history of Zoro, who, instead of a month, was supposed to last only a week with Morgan.
We will revisit characters a lot. But it usually happens after hundreds of episodes since their last appearance. So you'll have to wait, but it's always a plesant surprise

I'm sure this will sound ungrateful, but I truly believe you two have greater One Piece stamina 🎉! If you watch even three episodes per sitting you'll find the pacing much more digestible. Obviously your ultimate choice and either way you've got a dedicated watcher, it'd just be amazing to watch longer swatches with you legends❤!
in the manga Zeff ate his own leg just so Sanji could have all the food they censored it in the anime by saying his leg got stuck underwater and had to cut it
in the manga, the Sanji/Zeff backstory is the same as the live action, Zeff eats his leg to survive; the anime is different because i think they felt that was a little to graphic/mature for the show which i think was mostly watched by kids at the time (not 100% sure)
I just now realised something I've watched one piece for many years and watched people react to it over and over again only now just thinking that Luffy and Sanji both had someone that lost a body part to help them I won't name other straw hats but other people in in one piece have either lost someone or something the comment section will understand. :)
Huh? In an older version of the anime they ate the leg, that wasn't changed originally but apparently that's how it is now. I liked it better because it was more heartbreaking.

Yea Ange, most characters return. Even the most forgettable ones return at some point or another. Even Gaimon (the guy who got stuck in a chest) returned like 4 separate times.
Not sure if yu guys know, but in the manga Zeff lost his leg because he had to eat it to survive when they got stranded. I think the animators changed it because it was too much for TV those days so they made up the anime story instead.
As some people already said : In the manga, zeff ate his leg. But I've something to say about this that I like to share : 1) I don't like when show goes to far into the "ugly"... like rape, cannibalism, slavery. ---> --> A show like One Piece has a light tone to it's whole being... and I don't like when it go too far. So I prefer this Anime adaptation, when Zeff sacrifice his leg for Sanji, but not by cannibalism. 2) For Buggy --> As someone say here in the comment, it's Oda's favorite character. And he made it Goofy, and somewhat light-hearted in the Manga/Anime... the whole scene in the open with blue sky. He does a party for Nami... there is real laugh and good town... + jokes. Okay he blows up some houses, but those are empty houses. --> In the show --> They added a more dark tone like Slavery... forced laugh by the "slaves"... dark scenes with not many light (Dark circus). --> I think it doesn't go in the direction Oda went for Buggy.... Buggy was ment to be goofy and loves by the public that read the manga. Well done in the anime, with his funny voice :D
The anime actually changed Zeff eating his own leg because they thought it was too extreme for the audience (kids/teens in Japan). Live action ended up staying true to the manga.

yeah, we saw Gin again. he appeared in the comic like two weeks ago beating probably any previous record of the longest passage of time between the appearances of a character and I'm not exactly sure if it is still theoretically possible to be beaten by any other named character
I hate when people start denegrate characters not by what they do and how they are shown in the series, but by exterior factors. In this case Pearl and Don Krieg. One thing I noticed is that the people that came from the live action and know that Don Krieg and his crew are set aside, discard all of them as nothing important. People that only watched directly from the anime, have a more critical and analytical impression of those characters. Though, you can also differentiate between the anime watchers that were said that Arlong Park is where the series "get good", will still do a similar thing as the people coming from the live action(even though to a lesser extension). Pearl does a lot of damage, is strong, and is funny. Still they say he is inconsequential. And that conclusion is obviously taken just beause he was cast aside in the live action. -Spoiler warning- The same thing is done to Don Krieg, and is funny that in this arc he is the "De facto" winner. Where if it wasn't his squad throwing down the towel, they would get the Baratie. Yes, Luffy basically fall into the ocean and was dying, while Don Krieg just got unconsious, they could just simply wake him up. Many times Luffy won fights in the same way Don Krieg ended this one.
The anime sort of ruined Zeffs sacrifice.... He originally cut off his own leg as means to keep himself alive while giving Sanji all of the food so he didn't have to do such a thing. The anime made it so that Zeff literally had no other choice but to cut his own leg off otherwise he would have just died right there. Less of an impactful moment seeing as he didn't fully do it for Sanji.
I see it as opposite. In anime zeff jumped into water to save sanji (and got trapped). In manga, as well as in anime he gave all food to sanji. So that part is same. In manga he ate his foot for his own survival, not for sanji. But in anime he lost his leg because he chose to help sanji. So anime sacrifice is far greater. Plus anime zeff is chad for living 80 days without food. Meanwhile manga zeff is noob for eating his own leg to survive. Everyone knows that the trauma of losing a leg costs the body more than what you can get from the nutrients of eating that leg.
@@amisedai942 right but just beware that Netflix doesn't have all One Piece episodes, they skipped a lot of arcs and released the latest arc already. If you're watching on Netflix and you see that the next episode is now Egghead (latest arc) then that is the time to stop watching cuz of spoilers

The sanji backstory in the live action is more true to the source material than the anime... Can't say the same about the other backstories tho. And by true I mean the eating his leg part was changed in the anime
In the manga, and in the Live Action, Zeff eats his own leg to manage his hunger, which is the real route. The anime took an alternate route by making Zeff leg-less via the anchor.
