I picked up this little gem last weekend at a Hamfest, so I thought I would go ahead and do a review of it. As well, I am posing a question to the audience on how I will review high end speakers going forward like the Thiel CS7 from the 90's.

But do you want to see the higher end speakers still be compared to the Advent or would you prefer them be compared to a new baseline like the Pioneer TZ-9?

@@stereoniche Compare them to the Advent. I root for the little guys.

I still have my G-4700. Note that I bought mine on September 3, 1979 from the Highland Appliance in Saginaw, MI. So you need to change your script as the receiver was definitely for sale in 1979. Great receiver. Still works swell. It's now paired with the Philips AF-829 I bought at a Tech Hifi going out of business sale in early 1981 and some vintage speakers by The Fisher I found in the basement of the condo my mom bought. Makes for a pretty good vintage-sounding system.

It is a challenge to find exact start and end manufacturing dates, but the Orion Guide I picked up after this video shows they were made from 1980 - 1982 (a year longer than I thought when I made this video). So, perhaps they released some to market in late '79, but consider them to be '80 models (like cars). That Philips looks to be a very nice table. Philips is a bit under the radar for many, but they produced some very nice gear. There is a set of speakers they produced in 1990 that I would very much like to find.

I had this unit with my JBL decade L36 speakers and I miss them both very much. The set was a perfect match!

Thanks! That will be great fun. I often think of the system I had in college and keep an eye out for the receiver.

I knew that when you saw this at Hamfest it would be yours. What a pretty little unit. Thanks for sharing. I think your Advents have been beaten up on for awhile. Maybe the Pioneers would be a good reference for higher end speakers.

Yeah, the Advents haven't won too many which is why I was thinking to bring in a bigger contender.

In reference to your curiosity about 8700DB model, Yes, that particular model was mainly sold through Asia and European military exchanges, PX BX, or NEX. The 8700DB sold in Asian military exchange or in AAFES or NEX mail order catalogue, they all came with silver face plate. The European version was in black face plate. Besides Sansui gears, exchange sold more exclusive audio gears such as JBL speakers of certain models. To me better source to look up just about all stereo equipment models is with "Orion" audio blue book. That is like an encyclopedia and lists A-Z with TYPE, YR, MFG, POWER, MODEL NEW LIST PRICE, RETAIL PRICE USED, WHOLESALE MINT AVG.(at the time particular year of the book was published).

Thanks for confirming my assumptions. I know that Sansui had very good presence in the military outlets, so it seemed obvious that must have been where the 8700dB was sold. They must have sold a ton as I have run across quite a few over the years. On Orion, I need to get an hard copy for reference. I am a aware of it, but never subscribed to their online site.

Just got mine restored and I'd forgotten how nice it sounds. If you like to crank the music, it's not the right choice. That's not what it's for. But if you just want full rich sound with enough bass, it's ideal.
@stereoniche
@stereoniche 10 месяцев назад
Indeed, certainly has its place in the lineup.

Yep, apparently the issue with the 700 series was the digital indicator, if it goes bad good luck being able to get it repaired. Same issue with Dolby (DB) asect of any recever by Sansui or anyone else, if it breaks good luck.
@stereoniche
@stereoniche 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, that damn DB board is a nightmare, which is why I typically recommend non-DB units.

They are all very nice units, but as you go up the chain, they get better. For most lines, if you get into the top 3 units of a line that has say 7-8 models, it is mostly just more power, so not a discernible difference in sound. That G-8k is a wonderful unit now and in 20 years from now.

The most important thing about using a certain speaker for a base reference is that it should be a speaker that people are familiar with, and one they've heard on ocassion. Otherwise the comparison is meaninglrss. People have heard Advenrs, people have heard Vandersteen, people (old enough) have heard AR 3A etc. The Pioneer Z model is likely a speaker that less than 2% of your audience has heard. That's a rare receiver you have there. Is there anything about Sansui equipment for sound that draws you to it and what is it that makes them distinctive?
@stereoniche
@stereoniche 10 месяцев назад
Yeap, the very reason I chose the Advent (and Minimus 7). The issue for TOTL however is that being in that realm essentially insures there were very few ever sold, so very few will actually have heard them. The one exception is the Klipschorn, but because I cannot set them up properly, they are out of consideration. The high end models I will be reviewing will all blow the Advents away so I want to give them something more inline to better relay the differences. Stay tuned.

@@stereoniche Actually Scott, I think the Bose 901 IV would be another one many people have heard. But I think too many people make fun of Bose, for that to be a smart baseline speaker to use. Maybe a current speaker would be a good speaker to use for that? I knew a guy who had AR 3A speakers for many years, and years later when the Advent speaker came out, his dealer thought he might enjoy them even more and he brought them over for a free tryout. After listening a few weeks, the guy kept his AR speakers, and thought the Advents had too bright a tweeter. It's possible to get too used to a certain sound and nothing else sounds right. I listen to rock, jazz, folk, and classical. A few country compilation Christmas albums too, around the holidays. The AR speakers would serve each of those music genres reasonably well, except for classic rock. Harry Pearson of The Absolute Sound used stacked Advents (2 per side) as a reference for a long while. Stacked Advents are a totally different animal. In a 1990s article, he said in priint he regretted selling his double Advents.
