The gifts are given to santa before the visit one way or another. The Santa's are rentable in Finland so yes they get payed. The payment differs between Santa's but the usual price is around 50 euros.

@@laurafellows689 Either payed or then some relative or friend dresses as Santa. Sometimes it's even dad going for the errand and then visiting as Santa in family 🙂

And because this is Finland and our relationship with drinking tends to leave a lot to be desired, sometimes Santa has had a taste of good old alcohol before he comes for a visit, which is... just wrong on so many levels and you can imagine how those visits turn out. So the responsible Santas advertise their services as "sober Santa" visits. I find it hilarious even though it's messed up that they even have to do that. Every Finn has a story to tell about a weird Santa who, at best, smelled like vodka and slurred his words because he was a couple shots too tipsy or, at worst, couldn't walk straight and passed out under the Christmas tree because... well... it's Finland and all that. It's all the way fucked up and I still laugh every time I hear a story like that.
