The fully restored Ruth band organ by Don Stinson, now playing at the Boardwalk's Looff Merry Go Round. It's sadly behind a glass alcove to protect it and to control the sound level. The state of California says the sound inside the merry go round building can not exceed 80 DB.

I rode this magical merry go round 50 years ago. We used to watch all the instruments play. I am an old man now, but I m not deaf. What a shame the working of this are hidden.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I remember riding this carousel in the late 50's and that organ was operating on the inside of the riding platform. There also use to be mirrored panels that surrounded the mechanics and center pole!!!! 👍

Last time I was at Griffith Park (about a month ago), the organ sounded great; no glass in sight! That organ is being worked on little-by-little by Josh Rapier and is now close back in shape after having played weakly for several years.

The db issue is a direct result of glassing in the low ceiling buildings. Glass is an excellent reflector of sound, and the low ceilings aggravate the problem. Santa Cruz was one (if not the first) to build a "modern" carousel building in this style, and it caught on with the preservation community as it showcased the carousel whether it was open or closed.

Thanks! I have some videos of a rally a couple years ago that I hope to post as soon as I can get permission from the organ owners. The problem is, it's on Hi8 tape and I don't have the software or equipment to digitize it and then make it into small clips suitable for RU-vid. Our newer family camera, however, has a video capability that I've been using. Its memory card can hold about 15 minutes worth of video. If I'm at another band organ event, I'll take some video.

Now they're putting glass around the Griffith Park Stinson? There has been great, unfiltered 165 band organ music at the Griffith Park carousel ever since 1939 (save for a few years)! I'll still get out there someday, but it won't be the same as it would have been.

I know this comments older than me and im late and you probably realized it but incase u didnt. This isnt the stinson from griffith park. The griffith park one will never be glassed unless some d*ck gets mad

Thanks for the comment about my music! Believe it or not, I've been working on some things for band organ (mostly diatonic) but nothing's finished yet. I don't like to force compositions because that usually pulls the quality down.
