I have played both of these string types and we have a problem right off the bat. The medium Santa Cruz Parabolics are very close to a set of medium acoustic strings in a 13 to 56 set and the Elixirs are more of a typical light gauge set at 12 to 53. That difference is measurable and is not an accurate comparison. I immediately heard the additional volume and punch from the Parabolics because they are physically bigger strings when measured. So for this to be both accurate and a more fair comparison you would need a set of medium ( 13 to 56 gauge) Elixirs to test against the Santa Cruz Parabolics.
I thought the point of the Parabolic Strings was to get away from the idea of string gauge? I’ve currently got the Parabolic Stings on my Koa Taylor in the video (probably the only string I’ll use on that guitar now) and Elixir PB Lights on my Taylor 714. Both guitars are early 2000’s and have the same neck, both strings feel really similar to me, the Parabolic Mid Tensions definitely don’t strike me as being like mediums doing a direct comparison right now. I’ll have to try a set of Elixir Mediums at some point and see how they compare, but they seem similar to a lighter gauge string to me.
very interesting. the parabolic tension seems more open, not in the highs, but rather in the voicing of the mids, the actual voicing of the chords is more clear. particularly with the harder pick. i typically use the nano web set on my martin, and now i'm keen to try these Santa Cruz strings.
In the stereo setup I liked the SC but in omni I liked the Elixir. The SC had more depth and not that annoying super highs. It's more ridiculous how expensive strings have become these days, Elixir is really a joke at 25$ a package ha! Great video, I wouldn't mind you going through a bunch of sets if you get an opportunity. Cheers 🎉
Ya, they were pricey. My biggest complaint with cheaper acoustic strings (GHS, Ernie Ball) is that they sound good, but the fret noise is really loud and harsh through a microphone. It’s why I’ve stuck with Elixirs so long, and they hold their tone for at least 2 months of heavy studio use. I’m about to buy a Gibson J-45 and will probably try a bunch of strings on it. Maybe I’ll do another video like this.
@@MillSounds I do like Daddario, have atleast 30h of good sound in them before they die off. I wouldn't mind doing a shootout myself but that's both an investment and a tedious task haha
