Part 4 of this continuing series on the Santa Fe Valley Division takes us on a 70s and 80s journey from Richmond to Stockton. At this time Amtrak had started running their new San Joaquin service via the Santa Fe between Port Chicago and Bakersfield, and they are seen running with FP7s, SDP40Fs, and F40PHs. In 1983 the ATSF and SP attempted to merge their assets together to form one big super system, the railroads were so sure of their success that units began being painted ahead of a merger that was thought to be approved but ended up being rejected by the ICC. This paint scheme dubbed "Kodachrome" shows up frequently in this program adorning both EMD and GE power.
In addition to the Amtrak trains and Kodachrome units, there is also plenty of regular Santa Fe action to be seen, and you'll see the Richmond Road Switcher doing its normal switching duties at Christie and Collier, as well as the hot 199/991 trains between Chicago and Richmond starting and ending their journeys. Western Pacific's SN detour train of steel coil makes its runs between Pittsburg and Stockton on the ATSF, and the train is seen in Antioch, Stockton, and Holt. Steam also makes an appearance as Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson 2860 is also seen in the program running from Port Chicago to Stockton via the Santa Fe in 1977.
These Super 8mm movies come from the cameras of Don Kaplan, Fred Klyver, Angelo Figone, and John Filson, and come from the Western Railway Museum, and the collections of Angelo Figone, and Rob Klyver. Additional views for this program were shot on 16mm film by Louis Stein Jr.
Enjoy this look back at the Santa Fe Valley Division in the 70s and 80s!

That Alhmbra trestle & tunnel is impressive. Growing up in S.F. Valley we were well used to Santa Fe, but never saw this place. Drama.

Great video! Gotta love the sound of those EMD's, as well as the bells at the road crossing's! Brings back lots of memories, especially at Stockton tower, where I spent quite a bit of time in the 80's and early 90's!

Not much has changed. I worked for BNSF for 5 years in Richmond before moving to Stockton. Lots of memories.

I think this one is the best of the series, but that's likely due to me living along the BNSF Stockton sub, and I enjoy the trip back in time. The piano intro music, what is that? It's quite catchy... I like it!

Where is Collier? I can't find it on a map. EDIT-would the west switch be at Palm between Willow and Sycamore? I railfanned there for a bit once because a wb was in the siding waiting for an eb, then went to the west portal of tunnel 3 and waited...and waited...and waited. After about two hours, with mother nature calling, I started heading back to my car. No sooner than I got out of sight of the portal (I really wanted a shot of a train emerging), one came.

Collier is about half a mile east of the I-80/Hwy 4 interchange in Hercules. The siding passes over Hwy 4 on a concrete bridge.

These projects are made based on whatever surfaces and what I have access to, currently I don’t have any mid to late 1990s videos available to me to make any full videos

Kodachrome was rolling back then. Too bad it's a failed merger.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_Lz9OF_AJtI.htmlsi=-NUauOGZKjIi-jgd Any video of the BNSF Stockton sub is welcome. Franklin Canyon (NoCal) is a majestic setting in American railroading especially so close to a major urban area. Many more videos on RU-vid.
