As a resident who lives under the flight path of the landing approach of the Sonoma county airport its not as bad as they make it, neighbors are more loud with music, the flights are temporary min or 2 and to make a point about grumpy old neighbors complaining if you live in santa rosa we always hear the medical helicopter come in and that noise is also temporary and its to save a life
No it isn’t like that at all. I've lived in SoCo for 50 years, and in my current residence for 25 years. The airport opened in 1945. By the time I got here in 1974 The airport was very small still, just a few private planes in and out every day. it was not until the early 90s that any kind of commercial planes (and these were primarily small dual prop planes,) flew in and out of STS. Then came the commercial jets, but they never impacted West Sonoma county (i.e. the fifth district) as they do now. The airport has recently grown Significantly with regards to infrastructure and upped the ante over the past few months. All of a sudden there are multiple low flying commercial jets over out rural canyon where there were almost none before, not this low and not this loud as to disturb as these do. The airport isn't that close, about 10 miles away. From what I understand, these low flying planes are affecting Windsor, Sebastopol and north Santa Rosa residents as well. We never had a problem until about 2 weeks ago. Now it’s a royal headache. They evidently had a feasibility study and public meetings - never heard about any of them. Now I suppose it’s too late. Although you can complain on their good neighbors page of their website. The other piece of information I received which I’m going to have to confirm is that the FAA ruled that pilots departing STS are permitted to use GPS to determine their route out to their flight path along the coast. So naturally, they just go wherever they choose. As I said, I’m going to confirm this, but I was told that I could complain to the FAA regarding this policy.
@@sshmuckatelli @beverly7475 OMG simmer down you two. Trump nor Biden have anything to do with this. That said, the airport was there before these modern houses went up and while it's annoying to have the noise, the airport serves a vital role in the Sonoma community. Particularly being a jumping point for fire teams, which pertains to the helicopter, etc. AT SOME POINT Americans all need to face a reality that they keep denying - Are we going to understand and accept some noise for the betterment of our community not being burned, so we can easily travel by air to places we lacked access (should we drive to SFO/SAC) and stop being so petty about me me me and my needs but for once think maybe if that helicopter didn't exist, your house might be the one it could've saved. Or how about the idea of making a modern airport and working with the FAA to move the runways and terminals and landing pads alignment elsewhere and establish flight paths that can mitigate some of the noise. Blaming Trump or Biden isn't going to solve anything. And let's be real. Neither are a great fit for President, however, only one is leading his voters like cult leaders do and is repeating a lot of the same history as what happened 100 years ago in the Weimar Republic soon to be known as Nazi Germany. So we can either have one old man who's likely going to keel over in office and we get Kamala Harris who serves out the term and likely doesn't win reelection herself, or we have a dictator who is above the law but you arent meaning no more vigilante justice cause he will come down hard on anyone. You think you're not free now? So cool it.
Don’t like it? Move. Airport was there before any housing development. I lived near a hospital with landing pads a block away. Sunday mornings 3 or more flight for life helicopters land there for some kid of meeting for an hour and take off 1 by 1 and most of them fly directly over the apartment a few hundred feet above. Sometimes shaking the place up a bit but…as an aviation enthusiast, I loved it.
@@beverly7475you keep saying that, which can only mean one of two things, either when you say miles you mean like 20-30 plus miles or you don’t know how aircraft take off and land.
That's hardly the whole story. STS was a tiny inconsequential backwater airport until quite recently, where a few private planes flew in and out per day. then came a few commercial jets a day. Now its almost constant. This is a new thing and not something one had to live with. I never received a single notice of any public hearings. And we're not that close - about 12 miles from the airport. Not everyone is a Karen. Its affecting people all over the county.
The airport existed long before they did. You can tell as the build up is RIGHT ALONG THE RUNWAY, and NO AIRPORT would be purposely built in that area that close to homes and industry. While it's annoying, you got a great deal on the house because its next to an airport which is how and why you live there. Now you want to complain about the fact airports will be utilized as ports for air vehicles?? HOW STUPID! How about this, seize their property as eminant domain for a public benefit to the city and county and airport, leaving these complainers out on their ass.
Up front: I'm biased. I love airplanes and anything that flies. I grew up on Air Force bases and was never bothered by the sound of ginormous bombers or afterburning fighters any time, day or night. And if anybody thinks a 'chopper makes a lot of noise, I invite them to camp next to any runway that hosts afterburning jets. That being said, I must ask the complainant: who was there first, you or the airport?
Actually, yes... many of these homes were there before the airport. It was in a different location closer to downtown Santa Rosa. As the city expanded in the 50'-60's they moved the airport to the northern end of Santa Rosa.
Did she move in when the airport was already there? I bought a cheap house next to a train track and understood full well why it was so cheap. Take some accountability Karen.
Buy a house directly next to an airport, flip out when aircraft take off and land. How do you think people that live near an interstate highway feel? Sorry society doesn't bend to your wishes. Turns out your not that important.
You purchased a house next to an airport, and then you complain about the noise....? The folks next to SFO install triple pane, dual insulated glass in their windows, In America you do not have to purchase property near airports, it's a choice. But you can't act entitled 25 years later, that's not how it works. Do your research before you buy a home. Airports grow over time.
The Avalanche at Palisades should likely have been avoided. They used to dynamite early in the mornings if they had a lot of new snow (just to be safe). Maybe they have more reasons not to dynamite these days?
The people that control zoning are greedy tax collectors. They will allow building where no building should be. Racetrack out in the sticks? Put houses next to it and close the track because of the noise.
That's how you train safe. They don't want to be in the middle of no where during an emergency. Helicopters are dangerous and essential. They need to be able to land somewhere close to help because the situation can be catastrophic.
Pfft! That's nothing. Try living in the flight path of a Marine Corps Air Base. Osprey flying over 3-4 nights a week. And not just 1, the whole squadron.
It's not just this helicopter operator, there has been a noticeable uptick in helicopter traffic over the past several years. I live in Petaluma, the amount of low flying helicopters flying over through the center of town is ridiculous! All thought the weekend too, from early in the morning to late at night. The helicopters are flying low enough to identify. They are from multiple public funded agencies that must be costing the taxpayers a fortune. There are also many unmarked private charters. Like I said, something has changed in the last several years - we never had this much helicopter traffic before in history. There's no need for them to fly over populated areas, neighborhoods and cities. Instead, they should be flying on the outskirts of town.
The growth is caused by population. We have Cal-Star helicopters at the airport along with Henry1, Reach, Butterfly Helicopters and PG&E. They are identifiable along with ALL of Helico's helicopters.
@@MarleneMirettiYes! Exactly! Everything is based upon “projected population growth” many of these issues are never fully discussed or vetted at public meetings. There are huge impacts and carrying costs to the taxpayers for all this so called “growth and development”
The fixed winged noise I could understand. They need the runways. The helicopters are more flexable. They could make a win win agreement with some more distant ranches. Some use them iin their herd management.
