Santa Ynez (KIZA) to Santa Barbara (KSBA) - an interesting short hop in Southern California.

Moe and I flew to Southern California and I continue to expand my comfort zone with long-distance flying. Santa Barbara Airport (KSBA) was the final destination, but we stopped over at Santa Ynez (KIZA) as KSBA was showing a low IFR. 45 minutes later, with the cameras mounted and KSBA clearing up, we launched on this 19-mile cross country. A couple of quick lessons learned during the flight -
1. KSBA Tower does not like direct calls for Class Charlie entry. They sent us back to Santa Barbara Approach.
2. When referring to THE Freeway in this neck of the woods, Approach most likely means the US-101. Verbally confirming this with the controller is useful.
3. Great Controllers - they put up with our lack of familiarity with local procedures without a hint of annoyance and got us to our destination without issue. Thank you!
Hope you enjoy the flight!

Love your videos Misha. Just a tip, for others flying to KSBA. Normally, when they say follow the freeway inbound at SBA, for RNWY 15 L or R , they mean the freeway that's right by the airport 101frwy. From where you were when you stablish communication, he thought you are going to go South than follow the freeway inbound for right base. The road you are following is a highway and it is smarter to follow that road as the terrain is the lowest there and you always have a nice highway to go down to if anything. This is why he questioned you, where would you be entering the C - airspace as he saw you were continuing your east, now when you follow that highway, it still intersects the 101 which you can follow for a left base now not right base for 15.

Like you’re videos! Our Cardinal is actually based in Santa Ynez and I enjoy watching the videos you post from up and down the coast. Next time you do this little hop I’ve found it easier to approach SBA from the North….if you depart IZA to the west you’ll come to a nice little pass in the mountains (Gaviota). Start following the 101 east and you’ll wind up on a left base for one of the 15 Runways or a downwind for 25. That way gives you ample time to get the ATIS and establish comms with approach. You also don’t have to do the rapid decent after crossing the pass like you do if you cross the mountains to the south. Happy flying!

Excellent content. Now I know what to do in case i end up going that way. Landscape in the video helps a lot as well.
