Santarém, capital of the Gothic in Portugal
It is a Portuguese city, capital of the District of Santarém, located in Ribatejo province with 29 929 inhabitants, subdivided into 18 parishes.
The foundation of the city of Santarém refers to the Greco-Roman and Christian mythology, recognizing in the names of Habis and Irene, their mythical origins. The earliest documented traces of human occupation date back to the 8th century BC. There are many Gothic-style monuments in Santarém, which, due to their profusion, gave it the title of “capital of the Gothic”.
