If anybody is interested...... According to searches and excavations on Santorini, the first human presence on the island is situated back to the Neolithic Period. Santorini hosted an important civilization around 3600 BC. Discoveries made in an important city near Akrotiri and the famous Red Beach showed the existence of an ancient Minoan colony. The city was very similar to those found on the island of Crete (like Knossos), with many wall ornaments and pottery showing naturalistic landscapes of animals and humans of the same ancient Minoan style. In Ancient times, Santorini Island was known as Strongili, which means round in Greek. Strongili was the victim of an enormous volcano eruption in 1,500 BC. The eruption was so huge that many consider it to be the main cause of the destruction of the great Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, situated 70 nautical miles away. The specialists believe that the explosion was so strong that it created gigantic waves that reached the shores of the surrounding islands and Crete. After the explosion, the centre of Santorini sank, and the many earthquakes that followed destroyed a big part of the rest of the island. Many studies and researches have been presented in our days about the volcano of Santorini, including a series of documentaries in the National Geographic. In some ancient myths, the destruction of the island is closely associated with the legend of Atlantis. According to history, Phoenicians settled on ancient Thera around 1,300 BC and stayed for five generations. Then, around 1100 BC, the island was occupied by the Lacedaemonian. Around 825 BC, the inhabitants of the island, then named Thera, were using the Phoenician alphabet. In the 7th and 6th centuries BC, Thera had commercial and trade relations with most of the islands and cities of Greece. During the Hellenistic Period, Thera, because of its central position in the Aegean, became an important trade centre and an important naval base, due to its strategically perfect position. Between 1200 AC and 1579 AC, the island was under Byzantine rule and the church of Episkopi Gonia is founded. In 1204 AC the island is surrendered to the Venetian Marco Sanudo and becomes part of the Duke of the Aegean. The name of the island was given by the Venetians after the Santa Irini, the name of a Catholic church. During that time, there are strong battles between Venetians and pirates. During the Turkish rule (1579-1821) the island succeeds in trading development with the ports of Eastern Mediterranean. The period that follows is quite prosperous. Due to the wars of the 20th century, Santorini's economy declines and the inhabitants abandoned the island after the catastrophic earthquake in 1956. The tourist development in Santorini began in the 1970s and today it is one of the best tourist destinations in the world

Yes, I am constantly saying WOW with these views, obviously had never seen it from a live drone shot and it is truly magical!! Other places in Europe you feel like you're transported back in time. On the Greek Islands, it feels like you're transported into a dream. :-)))

We have fond memories of Santorini and Oia. Hubby, our daughter and I visited in the summer of 2008. The place was buzzing with tourists...nonetheless, we had an amazing vacation and our daughter will never forget that..she was a sophomore in college then. In October 2013, Hubby and I went back and visited. what a huge difference! There were less tourists and we truly enjoyed our visit again. Thanks Chris and Carol for a remarkable and breath taking vlog...Santorini will always be in our hearts and will never tire of this magical place...

When my wife and I stayed in Santorini, we stayed in a town called Mesaria. We traveled with our 2 children so we needed 2 bedrooms and the apartment cost in Mesaria included car rental in the price ( less than a 1/4 of the price of Thira accommodation without a car at the time). Turned out most of the staff of the Thira tourist services also lived there. Thira was only 10 minutes away by car and the longest journey on the island 1/2 hour drive. In a week we saw ALL of Santorini. Thanks for trip down memory lane.

We've been twice and returning for a 3rd time this year. The locals have told us the best sunset is not in Oia. We've stayed in Imerovgli and Pyrgos, stunning views from both spots. Our advice, hire an atv to see all the sights on the island. Look forward to your up coming greek vlogs

If not for seeing the tourists,it looks like some force created white honey combs on top of all the cliffs of Santorini and then left mysteriously en masse! Very otherworldly.I think u really got to experience it on your walk,even I know Carol longed to be asleep in her bed! People do see a lot by renting motor scooters to go from village to village.The water where you were swimming was so crystal clear.Very interesting place but when it comes to stark dramatic beauty, nothing has beat Iceland yet.I still think about that ice blue underground cave u went in.

I like the color sea deep blue and for me surprised by the crows and the density, a lot of hotels and accommodations in relatability lack space. When that place exploded the island of Crete was flooded and the population died. The explosion cause a tsunami going all the way to Egypt. Thanks.
