some say calvary and others claim infantry or a fleet of long oars is the supreme sight on the black earth. I say it is the one you love.⚛😀❤

One book I would highly recommend is “Tipping the Velvet” by Sarah Waters, published in 1998. The story is set in England of the 1890s and the central character is a young woman named Nancy Astley. Nancy-“Nan”-lives with her family over their oyster restaurant in a seaside village in Kent. Nan has a liking for the music hall, and one day she sees a male impersonator-or “masher”-named Kitty Butler perform at a local theatre. Nan begins haunting the theatre to take advantage of every opportunity to see Kitty, and Kitty eventually takes on Nan as her dresser. The two become lovers and then move to London where a glorious career on the stage seems to beckon, but complications begin to arise when a man named Walter Bliss tells them they need a stage manager and offers his services. I found this novel to be an old-fashioned solid and satisfying read, with fascinating and resourceful characters who appeal to the reader’s sympathies without becoming cloying or sentimental. What I found most impressive about the book was the tremendous amount of research Ms. Waters must have done to recreate the atmosphere of the late Victorian music hall, from the makeup and costumes the performers wore, to their slang and patter songs, and even their peculiar way of speaking. And the life outside the music hall, including growing social movements in the streets of London, are also vividly described. I really enjoyed this book!

@@kiranreader I have to admit that my taste in seafood tends to run towards old fashioned heavily battered, deep fried fish 'n' chips. I also like New England clam chowder, though I haven't made any in a while. Maybe when the cooler weather returns in the fall ...
