Handel's Sarabande , HWV 437, is a famous Baroque sarabande for harpsichord solo, published in 1733 by the British composer of German origin Georg Friedrich Handel (1685-1759), taken from Suite No. 4 in D minor HWV 437 from his nine harpsichord suites of 1733, HWV 434-442 (not to be confused with the air (sarabande) in E major, for violin and basso continuo HWV425).
His version for string orchestra, timpani and basso continuo from Stanley Kubrick 's film Barry Lyndon in 1975 became one of the most famous film scores in the history of cinema, winning an Oscar for best film score in 1976.
Georg Friedrich Handel is one of the most important composers of baroque music of the 18th century (Age of Enlightenment). Born in Germany the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach, he learned music in Italy, then settled permanently in London, where he became a naturalized Englishman in 1727. This sarabande originally composed for solo harpsichord 6 (dance of the period baroque) is one of his most famous works.
Sarabande, originally, a dance considered disreputable in 16th-century Spain (zarabanda), and, later, a slow, court dance that was popular in France. The sarabande is a dance in triple metre, or the music written for such a dance.
