I am an retired RN,BSN In my career I have done a lot of post mortem care. Most of my fellow collegues looked upon this as one of these "yuckie" things a nurse must do and if he/or she could delegate this to someone else, they would do just that. As for me, I did not see it that way. To me it was a final act of kindness as well as good patient care. If the family were coming to visit prior to either the person being taken to the morgue or being taken to the funeral home, I would wash the person (if soiled) shave their face, put them in a clean gown and put a clean sheet and blanket over them, a towel under the chin, raise the head of the bed slightly and then after I would make the sign of the cross and say "Rest in peace my friend." I would then usher in the family or friend(s) offer coffee and show them where the phone was if they needed it. I"ve even prayed with families if they requested it, or called the chaplin. I am hoping this made the family feel better, and the person in question rest more peacefully. Bye the bye, I was a nurse for 35 years, no I was not a hospice nurse just a staff nurse. If you are reading this, thank you for your time.

Thank you for showing respect and caring behavior to a deceased loved one. Some people just can't understand that everyone deserves a respectful send off and the post mortem care is part of that routine. I hope there will be another caring person around for me when I die.

I don’t know how many times I have had to inform families that their loved one has passed. This is something that wasn’t taught in Nursing School. It breaks my heart every time. I am of the thought that I took care of this person while alive and now I owe them as much respect and dignity as possible. Grief is so personal. You just have to remember that this person who has passed, was someone’s father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, sister, brother, etc. It is a honor to prepare someone who has left our world and has started on a different plane of existence. We will all be in the same position one day.

I worked in surgery, and had several people die. It was not a good experience. We didn't do any of this, as it was an emergency accident in the middle of the night. I was on call this one night. I remember being left alone in the surgical suite with a young man that we couldn't save. All we did was take all of the IVs out and catheter and any tubes such as a chest tube. That was it. Shortly after that, I quit my job, I couldn't handle it. It's very stressful to watch someone die that way.

I have been a CNA working in longterm and hospice care for years and have NEVER had a nurse do ANY post-mortem care. That is what we do. Most of the nurses never even see the person once they are pronounced. We do....just like with all other care. Nurses do not do this....at least not in my world.

When my husband of 30 years died (in a LARGE hospital), me and our children were brought into a room with his mouth wide open, one eye half open, yellowed skin...he was grotesque! He had a heart attack. We were NOT permitted to be alone with him at the hospital. They had him wrapped up like a burrito. I'm assuming to hide the effects of the CPR. We did not get any kind of a peaceful closure until the funeral home viewing. ALL hospitals do not offer this...it should be EXPECTED at the very least!! Horrible experience for me and our 2 ADULT children. Shame on you NORTH MISSISSIPPI MEDICAL CENTER!!!

my mom has had 2 do this... alot of people in my family have been trained nurses & worked at major hospitals & also physical therapy & also with elderly... i think that hospice or icu..would be the hardest or stressfull one...takes a certain person i guess.. i would love 1day 2help in that area, but i love people & helping but watching someone u get 2know and friend them & then see them pass & also knowing hey its hopice this is where their final moments will be & u cant save them is & would be soooooo heartbreaking, tearful,& sooooooo devestating... its a good & bad in that job area... good how u still try & help & still help them fight & never give up,they have another person who cares,& fights with them 2 try & still be here & also fights with them..- backs them up stands behind them & gives & shows support♡ & then theirs the bad... u lose the battle, their battle, they pass,ur sad & heartbroken & 4their families,& if their just a baby or kid or toddler its hurts just as bad maybe even more... but death is part of life,we all will have our time 2 go.. but its sad..but people have their own beliefs/religion..as of where we go when we pass... i think god is real & we will see our loved 1s again, but when the times right,& on gods time...we dont always know the whys when things happen or all the reasons... but god does... life is full of oppertunity, chances 2take etc & lessons 2 be learned...our choices determines i think where we'll end up 4 all eternity... no1s perfect & all religions have their own faults... life is short,we'll never be promised another hr or wk or more we dont know how long we have here on earth... we should all learn 2 appreciate more,or people,or what we have or helping others or just tryin 2 do right.. life is short we should live 2 the fullest & try 2 with no regrets...

YES she's moving & alive... she is PRETENDING... because its a presentation or just like an example... 2 show u what the process is step by step, showing u what is done & why being done ;-) i dont think all hospitals maybe do that,or maybe the hospitals are just over-busy,or maybe not trained 2... :-/ i think all hospitals should... it would be respect 2 the ones who passed & their families... because people like them is why their imployed.. so... its the least they can do (0:07) THEIR... demostraiting...

Of course all hospitals as well as other facilities perform post mortem care just like demonstrated. Just because they are deceased doesn't mean you don't care for them. They are still the responsibilty of the nurse and aide and it would be sloppy and disrespectful to NOT perform pm cares. It's part of their job. The only time the floor nurses wouldn't perform post mortem care would be when the body is taken for organ harvest, in which case the OR nurses and aides would perform pm cares.

Years ago when I first started out as a nurse's aid, we had to do a lot more then that . We had to stuff all holes , yes all holes . This was after we gave them a bed bath. Then wrap the thing around the chin and head to keep the mouth shut. Tie the hands and feet together , put the toe tag on , then wrapped the body in a shroud. But if the family was not coming to see the loved one , we did not bathe the body, but did the rest and took it to the mourge. Things are done different now.

We did complete baths also but we washed them with either shaving cream or a strong smelling body wash to cover the smell of death. We never tied their hands, jaw or feet but did need to tie the wrap but also did it in the middle. It is usually pretty easy to get the eyes to stay closed by simply holding them for a bit and jaw to stay closed with a towel rolled up as you clean the rest of the body. Also, if the family was coming or already there we would play some soft music to interrupt the silence and turn the lights down.

Back to the conversation. Earlier about staff treating the deceased and not respecting privacy for family- I just thought of two reasons why the staff may be like that when the patients time comes. One, because of the time crunch they are in to finish up and make the room available to next person, and two: possibility of some of staff not really being familiar with too much end of life situational stuff i. In other cultures country's; the customs are different. But whether it's in a hospital or a hospice or a group home to die in, the employer should definatly let all staff know to allow family and friends there private time to say there goodbyes and to mourn without any interruption. This is the American way. But sadly; seems many times the staff is under the gun to get get things moving. I only got 15 minutes after my brother died befor 2 staff members came in. One to wipe him down And the other was from social services to wrap it up with me. I do believe they would of granted me more time to stay but they didn't want to start in on the room and the wipeing befor I told them I could. And that at least is respectful.

I found your video quite distressing, first there should be two people (nurses) performing the last office. If you are using a body bag use one do not say that then do something different-not a sheet. Your wrapping of the body and tying were untidy. The sheet should have been rolled out under the body so there was plenty of material on either side to wrap, when you pulled the material over the deceased 's head it should have been placed neatly over the face and not scrunched up. Relatives are distressed enough about the passing of a loved one and a untidy last office would just create more distress If there were two nurses this would not happen.

Ghoul like? Caitlyn Doughty is the mortician that creates "Ask a Mortician" videos and she performs them the way she does for a light hearted look at death, which people find more interesting as well as easier to watch and very informative. Just because a person is a mortician, doesn't mean they are in a constant state of macabre. She is an excellent mortician and treats the decedents with the utmost respect and dignity, certainly not acting the way she does in her videos. Hmm, I think in my mom's case, the crematorium did this. My mom's eyes were open went I went to view her body. She was still wearing her pussy hat, so they didn't prep her from what I could see. Which was honestly fine with me. Death doesn't need to be prettied up to make it more palatable since the family were all adults.

My knowledge of the German language is anything but fluent, yet I know when someone is being insulting. This is America! and you do not need to worry about the Gestapo or the secret police arresting you for speaking your mind! Cannot speak English, get a friend to translate for you! or are you ashamed of what you said.......translate please (Bitte)
