First time I ever heard this piece was when a student played it on his violin, accompanying a tape, in Culver Square Colchester just before Christmas 1984. I'd started going out with my wife of 30 years at the office Christmas party the day before. I stood transported by the music and the sunshine of my new girlfriend's love. Sarah Chang's performance brings back the memory of that very special day like no other.

Right. I just went to see Sarah Chang this past weekend. I was not feeling well. Suffered mightily through the first half and remained silent. I left at intermission knowing I could not take another bout like that, but more importantly I did not want to ruin the performance for anyone else. Fortunately I got to see Sarah perform a short piece in the first half, but most of her performance was in the second. Bummer!
@edwardmerrick6089
@edwardmerrick6089 6 лет назад
The smile on her face at the end tells me she knows she has hit it out of the ballpark. I think what makes this performance so exceptional is that she is playing with a chamber orchestra and commands the tempo. I have never heard that rest held so long, but it was exquisite in its effect

I was in the audience when this charming and lovely lady violinist made her Malaysian debut at the Dewan Fil years ago (three performances in all) with this same glorious piece of music. At the end of her Sunday matinee performance - and one that was as scintillating as ever, as if this concerto is etched in her precious heart & soul -- I somewhat felt, or at least my nunchi told me, that she was less than satisfied with the earlier proceedings despite the tremendous response of the audience who took her to their hearts in that short time she was in Kuala Lumpur, like they do elsewhere each time they smelt a durian: standing ovation, post-concert autograph signing and such. I came to the conclusion that all this could be traceable to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra which accompanied her throughout those three concerts. At that time the MPO was a fledgling orchestra cobbled together with players from all over the world and was in an earlier stage of evolution as far was sound was concerned, so Ms Chang must have thought that if only she had had a more polished ensemble to have accompanied her on this trip....(She of course did put things right when she came back later to perform this concerto again, this time, needless to say, with her own orchestra, or one of her choice, at the Dewan Fil.). Evidence in view here on You Tube has shown her to have matured both in person and playing, and regarding the latter words cannot do justice. My first exposure to the Bruch was the recording of Kyung Wha Chung (these Koreans, don't they take to the violin like ducks to water?) but I now believe that the honor has now passed to Sarah, especially with this scaled-down affair that does nothing to detract one bit from the overall performance but on the contrary, adds to the intensity, with members of this great chamber ensemble playing as if their lives depended on it. Wonderful and thank you, danke, grazie, terima kasih, xie xie, kamsa hamnida.

She, the soloist, and they, the strings, conduct, play and reveal this work of exquisite feeling and beauty, as a commune, with all the fire, skill and reverence which it merits, and this is exactly how it should - and would- be done if Bruch could have his way. I have an old tape cassette featuring this concerto and the Mendelsohn. Over the years the Bruch has edged out the Mendelsohn because of Its' cascading sonics and especially tight structure. Not to mention the brooding opening that is the perfect springboard for a theme which draws copiously on an unflagging well of novel inspiration. Though the form is such that it is immediately accessible to all to understand and appreciate its' glorious unfolding! How must the composer have felt when the public took his first endeavor in the genre to heart to love and admire. The sweeping motif on the strings at the close of the first movement always brings to mind the string theme from the old Perry Mason series that terrified me when I was a young boy of about five or six years old. The show aired at about eight O' clock on Saturday night in the late fifties and I would pull the covers over my head in a desperate attempt to shut it out. Now I understand it was an early indication of my acute musical sensibility but then I just hated it. I love how Ms' Chang gracefully dances as she plays so that her entire body seems to amplify the intense joy of launching this piece from her instrument. For me it is an enhancement and punctuates her distinctive poise perfectly. I have yet to hear this concerto live and when I do Ms' Chang certainly will come to mind for a fitting prelude to brighten my smile outward and inwardly. Sincerely, Paul W. Green

The Bruch Concerto is one of the best and it is not as difficult as most of the other violin concertos. The second moment is my favorite and should be played slowly with lots of emotion. You will enjoy it.

The Bach Sonatas/Partititas are a good way to BEGIN to study double stops and independent fingering. These are mandatory studies for serious players.

Sarah Chang is the Queen Bee of all female violinist's, no one compares to Sarah Chang. Saw her play this very music in London 2012, people were crying with emotion ( myself included !! ) as they listened to her play so divinely and at the end the audience went crazy and erupted with non stop applause, people cheering, standing up, encores. What a night to remember . The little lady is a fabulous Violinist and onstage performer.

Have I heard 6:13 anywhere before? I don't know why it sounds so familiar. I mean, it did when I heard the Vorspiel for the first time too.

Love the music. But some insensitive jerk put ads in the middle of it. Jarring. Ads should only be at the beginning or end of a musical piece regardless of genre.
