Dr. Benjamin Boone interviewed violin virtuoso Sarah Chang for the Fresno Philharmonic's pre-concert educational series "Inside the Music," January 23, 2014 in the lobby of the William Saroyan Theater in Fresno, CA. Part 1: Discussion of touring, family, sports and how composer George Crumb suggested her name; Part 2: Discussion of the unique characteristics of the 1717 Guarneri violin and how Issac Stern helped her get it; Part 3: Sarah previews the Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, describing each section as she points to her violin part. Music from her EMI Bruch CD plays the exact excerpt in the background as she talks.

Yeah, I had bought that cassette years ago for the Mendelssohn violin concerto but the B side was the Bruch. As much as I love the Mendelssohn the Bruch almost immediately took precedence. There is an extremely visceral quality with the Bruch taking me back to my childhood. I was hardly five when every Saturday night I dreaded bedtime because the old Perry Mason show would air and I was literally terrified by the musical theme. I buried my head under my pillow in a vain attempt to escape that ominous, shrill leaping phrase in the violins. I am convinced it was derived from the finale of the first movement of the Bruch. I have yet to hear it live and trust I will have that opportunity sooner than later at the Meyerhoff Hall in Baltimore. This concerto is one of the prime reasons for my favorite original axiom “ music expresses wordless odyssey’s”. And, of course, “a thing of beauty is a joy forever.” PWG

I agree totally with her analysis of the violin......i have played on strads and del gesu's and the Strad filled out the room with sound, and the del Gesu was like a horn...penetrating and sonorous. It would be a hard choice.

I also agree with you, Mr. Hunter! I doubt that Dr. Benjamin Boone must have had some suspicion about Miss Sarah Chang, a child prodigy who played in public since the tender age of 8,9, 10 with those world famous orchestras conducted by great master musicians, if she is just a robot who has develop-ed the violin skills, skills only without the profound understanding of these classical music , the greatest invention or rather achievement of human intelligence and creativities! May be that's why he wanted to have an interview before they let her play with the orchestra under his command. I also was impressed with the profound knowledge, feelings and experiences of the violinist, Sara Chang, who seemed to have acquired the skill to play violin well but not the understanding of the signifi-cance of music, the great music. This interview proofed that Sarah is a really one of the great players of violin we have had, and learned to respect through listening their music.

Strads are every bit as powerful if you know what you’re doing. Her ‘del Gesu’ is well known in the business to be a fake, probably made by Vuillaume.

Sarah Chang so over-rated! Chang her violin sound colorless ugly like a black and white tv picture! Sarah Chang never played in the big violin competitions and the reason is no prizes! These over-rated like Chang Ann-Sophie Mutter Bomsori Kim steals concerts from better players!
