Many thanks for your very comprehensive and in-depth review of Sarah Kane´s work, in particular her first and final plays. A Spanish theater company will present 4.48 Psychosis in my town (Lima, Peru), next week and I am definitely planning to watch it. ¡Muchas gracias!
VERY interesting review man! I've recently read all of Kane's work and I agree with every point you've made here. In spite of the atrocities that occur in her play, I definitely think that Kane's primary theme in all of her plays (the majority anyway) is love and what people are willing to go through for it, as you said. On that note, I'd be very interested to see what your thoughts are on "Cleansed", another Kane play. It's a difficult read, obviously but the trials and tribulations people go through for love are all there. Would be very interested to see what you think! Thanks! :)
Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate that! I did actually read Cleansed in preparation for this video; it's what solidified that relationship between love and pain for me. I think it's Kane's most direct play, in that respect, but it's no less powerful. I touched on Cleansed a couple times when I recorded this, but it ended up on the cutting room floor. Probably her most explicitly graphic play as well, just in a body horror sense. Thanks for watching the video, it means a lot!
Just out of interest. Have you read any Edward Bond? Kane is pretty much an extension of his world except without his humour. If not try "Early Morning" "Lear" and "Saved".
