Never before have i seen a young woman so captivating, in every sense of that word. She captivates my eyes by striking beauty, curious eyes and a very sincere smile. She captivates my ears by a voice so profound and clear. She captivates my mind by making me wonder. And then to top it off she captivates my heart by setting a pace. Sarah Kay if you read this, don't fret, i won't stalk you, but i want you to know that you have a place in my heart through your poetry, which tells me there is at least someone out there who can captivate me to that level of just being in total awe, hearing you speak unto us your wonders, your questions, troubles and bright moments, quite frankly, you remind me of what it's like to be human. Better yet, to be a kid again, that precious gift we were all born with, but that fades away in time for so so many of us and that is... true wonder. I tend to be too rational, where once i was a dreamer, and listening to your poetry is bit by bit giving me back my ways to daydream again to look up and not see the clouds, but the sky behind them being vibrantly blue. Summing it up, i just want to thank you for being you, and sharing you, with us. Nico (The Netherlands)
I- you, Sarah Kay, are my idol. I'm seventeen years old and confused about everything and more than a little lost, but when I hear your poems, when I listen to you speak, the world calms down a little. Spins slowly enough for me to catch up. And I just wanted to say thank you, for that, because it's nice to be moving at the right pace every now and then. I don't know why that second poem made me cry, but it was nice crying, and thank you for that too. It's nice to be able to cry about something beautiful for a change, something I understand. You'll probably never see this, and that's okay, but I hope you do. I hope you know how grateful I am.
Sarah shows there is an evolution within us that comes from a far away place of speakers, dreamers, lovers and those who never stop believing in a brighter future.
She has been observing performances and performing herself for a long time. She is ridiculously dedicated to the art, and also holds more than one degree. Keep at it! I am. :)
I wish that the happy place her poems put me in were describable. A moment of gentle bliss, that makes even my heart seem quiet against the louder sounds surrounding me. Sarah Kay has helped me find my happy place. As a poet myself, I do sometimes compare myself to her. Then I realize, that she is incomparable. She is her own spoken word poet, and I am my own spoken word poet. She has helped me exceed limits I was blind to before. Thank you, Sarah Kay, for helping this Sara find her way.
This brought me tears, I was extremely moved by the poem dedicated to your former principal, my dream would be to inspire others and motivate people the way she did, and the way you continue to do, Sarah- your poetry is beyond beautiful, as are you! :)
Sarah Kay is a huge inspiration for me. I am so glad that a series of random youtube clicks has led me to her poetry and her story. Thank you for being another source of insight and beauty in the world.
her poetry is some much more than her words. It's the heart in her voice and the incredible poise she has at telling a story. God bless you and all you are teaching the world!
Spoken word poetry is poetry that is written on a page but performed for an audience. Because it is performed, this poetry tends to demonstrate a heavy use of rhythm, improvisation, free association, rhymes, rich poetic phrases, word play and slang. It is more aggressive and “in your face” than more traditional forms of poetry.
For those that have said that this isn't spoken word poetry, and that its just a rambling narrative, you demonstrate a lack of knowledge of what creates a poem in the first place, it seems to me. first of all its a narrative poem each break in the story is where a stanza would be on paper. its also free verse which means that it doesn't need a measured meter line that rhymes. out side of that like several people have already commented it uses poetic language as a normal written poem would. and lastly spoken word poetry is written with the intention to be performed and each speaker will have their own style, if your saying this piece is just a rambling narrative then you haven't listen to any of her other pieces.
Thanks for the pure awesomeness, for the inspiration, for creating & sharing this delicate art. Thank you for all your dedication and for bringing so much brightness & joy to me. I am so happy to have discovered you & your poems. Moving. Truly inspiring. Heartwarming. Peaceful. Thanks!
I totally agree. And, I'd argue that she does have a rhythm that may not be what people are used to with angry or political poetry but this poetry is very different. It is different but still just as valuable and valid. It is close in some ways to my own writing and a poet local to me one said, "your style of poetry and delivery is much different than the typical slam poet. But make sure not to get the poetry lost in the performance. Because there are no rules about what you have to sound like."
Sarah Kay your poetry inspired a girl from Africa to start blogging,i hope someday you will leave a comment on my blog ngumba-wada.blogspot.com .i would die from happiness if you do :) love your work so much .
Search for Blair Wingo that will give you an example of true spoken word. See spoken word is a talent. Like singing you either can or can't, but just like singing although everyone can "sing" per se, not everyone has talent with regards to singing. So point being I'm not being mean but just like its not mean to let someone know that they don't have the talent to sing publicly, its not mean to say she is just not speaking poems...she's just rambling. Don't ruin the art please
I'm not hating but I have to agree with others...just because you can put stresses on certain words in a sentence doesn't make it spoken word...this is a story, a testimony if you will but not spoken word...sorry
