Thank you. This “War on Christmas” thing makes me NUTS. When people at my church started griping about the phrase “Happy Holidays” (which has been said as long as “Merry Christmas” has been said), I countered with, “So, you do realize that ‘happy’ means the same thing as ‘merry’ and that ‘holidays’ literally means ‘HOLY days,’ don’t you? Isn’t Christmas one of the most holy days of the year?” Modern culture now takes “Holidays” to mean Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanza & New Years. And that’s great; much more inclusive. But the phrase was originally invented by the Church to give good wishes for the entire season around Christmas: •Advent - anticipation for Christmas starting several weeks before • Christmas itself • Epiphany - commemorates the Adoration of the Magi, the Baptism of Jesus and the Wedding at Cana during the first half of January. Those who still have a grip on the liturgical calendar know this. It’s mainstream Evangelicals who trended decades ago to get away from traditionalism who don’t know their own church history. So they actually believe that a beautiful, poignant greeting INVENTED BY CHRISTIANS centuries ago is actually an affront to Christians! It’s insane and ignorant. Thank you, Sarah, for a light-hearted take on this topic from our Jewish friends. I’d love to hear it from a Muslim’s perspective since, like Christians, they also celebrate the birth of Jesus by the Virgin Mary. War on Christmas ... sheesh.

Fun fact: In the mid-17th century, a wave of religious reform transformed the way in which Christmas was celebrated in England. Oliver Cromwell -- a statesman and General responsible for leading the parliamentary army during the English Civil War -- took over England in 1645. Supported by his Puritan forces, Cromwell believed it was his mission to cleanse the country of decadence. In 1644 he enforced an Act of Parliament banning Christmas celebrations. Christmas was regarded by the Puritans as a wasteful festival that threatened core Christian beliefs. Consequently, all activities relating to Christmas, including attending mass, were forbidden. Not surprisingly, the ban was hugely unpopular and many people continued to celebrate Christmas secretly.

Point is, we say ‘Happy Holidays’ more now because most of us have figured out that, get this, Christmas isn’t the only fucking holiday happening at the end of the year. We have a variety of cultures and holidays going on in this country and saying “Merry Christmas!” to someone who doesn’t celebrate Christmas makes you look and sound stupid. It’s just way easier to say Happy Holidays and that way you’ll never be wrong or have to guess what someone celebrates lmao

Sarah is Jewish and she is doing a comedy monologue here that definitely reflects her cultural and political point of view. I understand her Jewish perspective and she makes some good points, but misses that this is not really about what she sees as hate in people like Donald Trump. It is about the reason so many Jews were writing all those Christmas songs for films and TV shows in the first place. That reason is that the culture in America was so strongly Christian at the time that if you were working in show business, you were doing something related to Christmas. In recent times, that homogeneous feel has pretty much gone away for Christians. The commercial flash is still there, but culturally it has changed dramatically. Life used to stop for Christmas as Christians gathered to worship and there was a strong sense of community to it that permeated everything from school Christmas programs to nativity scenes in the local park. If you were Christian, this was an amazing time. For better or worse, we have removed Christmas from state affiliated places. Employers have developed equity campaigns designed to teach sensitivity to all cultures by encouraging immersion in new cultural experiences while intentionally removing the Christian ones that were once permeating the workplace. Before I get a bunch of angry replies, let me just say that I am trying to explain the feeling of loss that many older Christians feel and I am not saying that change is not inevitable or even desirable for our current society. As a Jew, Sarah points out that Christmas still is all over the place in our culture and why can't certain Christians get it that everyone does not have to celebrate it with far right conservative ideals or restore control over whatever it is they feel they have lost. She just misses the true sense of loss that many Christians feel and instead sees a political battle for dominance that hates other cultures. The opportunity that she may be missing out on is to realize that any cultural perspective (including her own) enforced through political dominance disenfranchises someone.

Thats the one point I never got- im from London, where all of the majority non-white population celebrate christmas. Why wouldnt you? Kids are off school, non-stop TV movies- and who doesnt love presents? Its not like the white, native born population particularly care about the jesus part either. Now I live in Spain, its not like when semana santa comes by i refuse to celebrate it because im not Catholic. Sarahs right, its all bu- Wait, another thing, nobody in london says happy holidays, they all say merry Christmas- because it means 'have a good time on christmas day', not 'something about the baby jesus'. So anyone on any religion can say it- like a chinese person can say happy new year. Anyway- bullshit.
