This video shows Sarah Scott seven years after her stroke, talking about her recovery. Please ask any questions below in the comments and Sarah will do her best to answer. Thank you for following Sarah's journey!
Sarah, I'm a cognitive psychologist at the University of Kansas in the USA. I've been following your story since the beginning and share your videos with the students that I teach each semester. What a gift you've given the world by sharing your story. I am always glad to hear about new milestones you've reached and the progress that you've made each year. Thank you for helping to increase understanding of strokes and aphasia. I'm sure you have been a huge inspiration to many people who have had similar experiences. Way to go!
Sarah, I am a speech-language pathologist and an instructor of speech-language pathology assistant students. Thank you so much for sharing these videos! I use them every year to help my students understand aphasia. It is so helpful for them to be able to see your course of recovery and the progress you have made. You inspire my students and you inspire me.
I've been following these videos for like 4 years now and it's amazing to see how far you've come! It's really inspiring to hear you talk about your life after the stroke. Keep posting more videos! :D
I watched this after seeing the video early on about 9 months after the stroke. It's really impressive that she's worked through it and made such a difference! You can't even really tell she has aphasia from her speech anymore
+SymphUK But just the difference of being able to quickly and effectively verbally express herself and explain aphasia to others must be invaluable! Dyslexia and other conditions make difficulties with reading and writing pretty commonplace and easy to understand and work around. But I can't even imagine having the speech difficulties that she did shortly after the stroke coupled with that. Immense respect for both you and her for working through it and making such huge progress.
I just found this channel thanks to my psychology professor showing us a video of expressive aphasia of you from when you were only 19. It's quite remarkable to see your progress! Your videos helped me understand aphasia much better than how it was explained for 5 minutes in class. I'm glad to see how successful you've been despite the the stoke. You're such an inspiration Sarah!
Hey Sarah (& mum), I've been following this channel when I first started studying medicine 5 years ago, Your recovery is remarkable! Thank you so much for sharing your journey which has helped me greatly when it comes to dealing with aphasic patients during my study! I wish you all the best in your new job! :)
No time is good for an injury or stroke or impairment, but the age at which this girl had her stroke and suffered this condition must have been extraordinarily difficult. Thanks for sharing all the videos with the world and letting us see your progress. Your story and the documentation of it is an inspiration, and will surely help others with this condition have hope for getting better. You are a brilliant example of what positive thinking and hard work can do. God bless you, and I hope the rest of your life is full of happiness and prosperity.
I had a stroke too in 2012 when I was 22 and although we look normal, I still feel everyday I have to prove my disability. When I park in disability space due to my right leg and arm paralysis people say ask me if I have a badge. Sometimes I feel like I would rather have no leg or hand so I don’t have to explain. I love how far you’ve come from the first video! I wish you the best!! Xx
Wow this is just awesome! You have come so far in those seven years and are such an inspiration to me and I'm sure to many! Congrats on the job too! You are just amazing! Love, hugs and good wishes, H. xxx
I have been watching your videos for about 2 years. You have recovered so well!! Your speech sounds great, and you continue to improve! Way to go . You are an inspiration! Peace to you!!!
you are an inspiration. i saw your initial interview and was inspired even then. you're strength and positivity shone through this ordeal from the beginning.
I just watched the video of you 9 months post stroke, this is just incredible the difference between the two. You are an inspiration to many and a great motivation for those working towards recovery.
And i went to this video, and see she is talking much better, which made me tear up in a good way. This really made my day, i got really happy that she got better
We watched one of your videos in our pathophysiology class very early after your stroke, and never more. I am so glad I looked you back up! So happy you have recovered as well as you did:) Keep proving people wrong and live your life to the fullest!
Followed your videos for years. So profoundly awed by and proud of you, Sarah. You're an inspiration for me, and so many of my fellow medical students. Thank you for sharing your journey and amazing progress.
Sarah, I am speechless. I applaud you and am inspired and touched by your commitment to your recovery and the progress you have made! You are an amazing, wonderful person! All the best with your future, and I hope all your dreams come true :)
Holy moly! I have also been following your story Sarah - you are doing SO well, thank you for teaching me - that strength, determination and commitment can get you anywhere THANK YOU so much
I came here having only seen the video at 19 years old, and I AM BLOWN AWAY. WOW. :D Thank you so much for sharing your experience, it has SO MUCH educational value for medical students! Keep up your amazing work!
So heartwarming to see this video after watching your first couple of videos after your stroke, they have been shown to us during our degree. So happy to see how far and how possible it is to come after a stroke. Bless
Oh my God! My lecturer showed us your very first video the other day and I'm so happy to see this one !! :) you speak really well now, ohmyGod, this made my day!!
Hi there, I absolutely love these videos of your journey, Sarah! I have sent an email to Joanie about some questions I have, as I am writing my dissertation at the moment about Sarah! Thank you for sharing your journey with us :)
Hi Sarah, you are doing beautifully. I just discovered your channel and have seen the progress you've made, and it brings tears to my eyes. I wish you all the best, and thank you for teaching us all that it is indeed possible to recover from aphasia. I'm a medical student and stories like these are what keep me optimistic that ANYTHING is possible, and that there is always hope :)
What a wonderful video! As a young man I also had a stroke--almost a year and a half ago (August 8th, 2015) and I saw your videos for the first time. Thank you for your gratitude to those who have had similar situations in your life. It is pretty cool to see the communication and technology we have today! Know of my prayers for you, your family and your progress on the road. God Bless!
Ms. Scott, I teach aspiring nursing and medical students at the university here in the US and have been showing your videos and following your progress for many years. Thank you for sharing your story and helping us better understand aphasia, strokes, and the struggles involved. I am happy to see how far you have come and wish you the best.
Hello Sarah! I stumbled upon your videos today, and I just wanted to say that I felt, at the same time, 1) happy for your recovery, 2) impressed by the progress you've done in seven years, and 3) inspired by your personality. The only thing I don't understand is how you manage to consider yourself "boring", because you are actually a very interesting person! All the best with your life, I'll keep watching your channel :)
I just watched your first video and saw this one next to it. Thank you so much for struggling to get better. I was so sad for you, seeing you right after the stroke, and so pleased to see you in this video. Great job!
I saw the first interview after Sarah's struggles with Aphasia. The video depicted the challenges of her limited speech abilities. It is really great to see how far she has come after 7 years since the stroke. Congratulations on your successful interview and I wish you all the best on your medical journey. You are a bright and well-spoken young lady.
Great video again Sarah. I know you touched on it at the end but it is plain to see with the passage of time that your confidence comes on leaps and bounds every year. Perhaps an idea for a future video - you might be able to demonstrate some of the tools you use to help you day-to-day with the things you still find difficult - you mention the phone apps you have and anything else you use - that might help others in a similar position that perhaps haven't come across some of those resources?
Thank you for making and sharing your videos. You are the same age as my eldest son and thus your situation is especially poignant for me. I am really amazed by your determination and your progress. You are truly inspiring. You've a new subscriber and I'm really looking forward to your next video.
WOW! The progress from the first video when she was 19... keep it up Sarah, your bravery and perserverance is truly incredible. The change is like night and day - must be so liberating for her.
Sarah, thanks so much for sharing these videos. It is great to see how far that you have come. Congratulations on the new job!!! That is terrific! Glad to hear it. Good luck on the new house, as well! Keep up the good work!
Brilliant!I'm so happy to see another update from you and i 'm amazed at your progress(and inspired).I'm a stroke survivor too.My language wasn't affected in a major way,But I've had my share of challenges also.I'm always inspired by stories from other stroke survivors, especially yours! It's great that you're involved with research.I've had opportunity to do this as well.Keep at it!Thank you for the video.
Sarah, I'm a last year psych student @ SFU in Vancouver, Canada. I saw your first video in the class and that made me really sad. Later in that day our prof showed your latest video, this one, and I was thrilled by seeing such improvement in your speech so much that I found my eyes being tearful. By comparing these two videos, not only I learned a lot about aphasia I also learned that there is always hope. Such an inspiring person you are. Admirable
Hello! While studying for my exams, I searched videos of aphasia on youtube to better my understanding and eventually came across your story. I got so much more than I bargained for! Thank you so much for sharing. You're story is very inspiring! Wish you the best of luck! God bless you
I stumbled upon one of the first videos and the next video in queue was 7 years later. An amazing transformation and tremendous perseverance! You are an inspiration to all :D
Dear Sarah, this is the first time I’ve seen your video. You are doing great! In 2011, I had my first stroke and I, too, experienced aphasia. Thanks to my daughter and my speech therapist, I feel I have improved amazingly well. Still have deficits but no one that I meet can detect I am a stroke survivor. Best.
I suffered a stroke this past October (21 years old), so I know how hard you have to work to establish yourself once again. My motor skills on my left side were affected, not my speech, so my hat is off to you girl. I watched your older video, and seeing you know lights my heart on fire. LOVE YOU
Thank you Sarah for this great video! I actually have both Epilepsy & Aphasia as well since falling down some stairs in 2014 over in Las Vegas. It's amazing that you've managed to get yourself a house and it would be great to have a conversation with you at some point. I actually meet a team over in both St George's & Queens Mary's each week to help me back at work which is very useful. It's awesome that you've also got yourself a new job 🤗
... You are gorgeous but it's the strong side of you, and the intelligence, that makes you even more so. I can't tell you how happy it made me to see all the progress you've made after randomly seeing your video, when you were 19, which put me on a (personal) journey of researching aphasia so that I could learn more about it. It gives me so much hope to see that someone can make so much progress. You are awesome.
