As someone who was in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2004, it is an amazingly beautiful country with great people. Sadly, they have not recovered from what happened in the early 90s

great video, but I have a lump in my throat. only eight years later, Sarajevo became a theatre of war.

Tragic, horrifying 💔 They were a great nation & happy people. Satan's system, politics and division destroyed their beautiful country & unity. It's very hurtful, and what's worse is most of the people from those unnecessary ways didn't recover and they're one of the worst off regions in all of Europe now. But they were some of the smartest, educated & ambitious, cultured countries in Europe and the most well off of any slav/isolated nation compared to my maternal side native Czechoslovakia and the Eastern Bloc. Zlata's Diary, very poignant story that helps one understand the reality of actual war & nice, normal life ruined due to total stupidity & political leaders who should be removed. Theirs was a particularly brutal collapse. If it were up to the people, most don't care and desire to live freely with anyone. Most people do not want to break apart into various countries. Her book & personal account taught me about drastic & sudden change in life, the unexpected, dread & misery, and a lot more emphasis on being grateful for everything, for each day!!! For water, something to eat, that was my first glimpse at modern war in a relatable country. They were such a proud people too. This was a very memorable, lovely & beautiful Olympics!!! It's back when they were worth watching. Lake Placid isn't that far from where I am. It's one of the most gorgeous areas I've ever seen and I've lived in beautiful places and seen some incredible, stunning places in this world!!! But this show brought a pretty culture & new introduction into a country we didn't know a lot about, Slavic but NOT Russian. Fascinating!!! I feel terribly for those from there, this must be emotional for them to remember or watch but at least it's preserved in time. 🤍🌹🤍

At 9:04, the word about Egypt's appearance in the 1984 Winter Olympics goes like this: "Egypt, wouldn't expect to see them here, would you. Egypt, the one-man team, Jamil el-Reedy, he is a skier." - Jim McKay
@AndresECB
@AndresECB 10 месяцев назад
And it remains Egypt's only participation at a Winter Olympics edition

I enjoy this video. I was born 11 days later, 3 days before the closing ceremonies. Then 8 years, a violent war brakes out. I hope in the future Sarajevo can host the Winter Olympics once again.

when I was little I was interested in the breakup of Yugoslavia. It was always difficult for me to understand how it was possible that after only 8 years the situation had changed so tragically

Its hard to grasp even for me. My parents were both 20 years old 1984 and in their prime years, the town they live in was booming, both were working, but still living at their parents, and saving up for their own place and life. A few more fabulous years for them, when they built their home, married, they had me, and then everything just turned upside down. We never recovered, my mother went mentally ill from all the trauma and loss, and dad turned to an alcoholic. She committed suicide after a few years, and dad died of alcoholism 2004. My grandma raised me since 1998 when she died. The few pictures my grandma had of us as a family, before 1992, in them they looked so happy and like different people. Nothing like I remember them. I just remember how mom cried all the time, how she never spoke, how she even thought I wasn't her child, and dad was a drunk 24/7, it was hell living with them. I hated them both, and still do, yet every time I look at those pictures I get stunned, cause I realize I never even got to know them.

Jim McKay, God bless him, was somewhat of a hackneyed announcer -- he probably wouldn't stand well in today's standards. Some of the gems he uttered here: 41:32 "Well they certainly could be patterns you might knit into a sweater." 10:45 "They've never won a Winter Olympics medal, and they certainly won't here." 09:04 "Egypt! You wouldn't expect to see them here, would ya?" 42:43 "Moving into yet another pattern ... no, this is the one they did in the first place." 15:05 "Mongolians often show up at the last minute, this time they knew they were coming." 09:18 "He recently spent 40 days in a cave that fella, in the middle of the Sahara surrounded by snakes and scorpions.. his father took him there, thinking it would make him a man. He ought to be tough enough for the slopes." 42:50 "I think that's the one I'll ask Margaret to knit into my sweater."

Correct. This is footage from ABC. Sadly, seems the original footage was lost due to the war so all we have on the internet regarding Sarajevo ceremonies are from either VHS recordings or documentals (which used different angles)

If there's one thing I could NOT stand it's Jim McKay's use of metaphors such as, "--until the Closing Ceremonies bring down the curtain on these 14th Winter Olympics." That sucked big time. McKay was such an overblown, poetic windbag. Just sayin'.
