Saramonic’s SmartRig+ is a compact, light weight adapter which allows you to record professional grade XLR and 3.5mm microphones directly to your camera or smart phone. Pretty impressive little device for a very good price.
Could be a good option for run 'n gun shooting, musicians who want to record guitar and vocals, and those on a tight budget who want to add higher quality audio to their production.

Great review, Curtis! 4 years later and this is still relevant. I have a (probably dumb) question: can I use all 4 inputs (the two 3.5 mm with the XLR inputs) at the same time? I wanted to buy a 4 channel recorder, but the Zoom H6 is just too expensive.

Thanks for this review Curtis. After viewing this and Caleb Pike's review I decided to try the Saramonic Smart Rig+. I'd been having trouble with the levels on the iPhone even with a good mic. "There was just no there there." Boosting the audio in post with Audacity increased the volume, but didn't really add "life" to it. Saramonic to the rescue. Nice clear audio with the extra sauce or "punch" that was missing from the iPhone audio. Thanks again for all you do.

Excellent review. I will use this in a class I am teaching to show students how they can get good audio without breaking the bank. Only additional Con from me is no limiters but if it had them it would double the price so this is a case of setting proper gain structure to minimize any chance of clipping.

Hi again Curtis, how are you? I hope you and your family stay healthy and safe :) I have more questions for you :D I want to make an ASMR mukbang video using two microphones (Samson C02 in pair). I already have Audio Interface Mixer Yamaha AG06 which served me well these two years. The problem is, I need something simpler like Smartrig+ for my video since I just have to put both mics on it and turn on the camera without putting it into my mixer > recorder and sync it in post. I know I can use my mixer output directly into my camera mic input but as you expected, electrical noise from different power sources. My concern with Smartrig+ is, Will I lose sound quality by using it, or will it introduce more noise? (since my mic self noise already high) Thanks in advance!

Hi adimology, Good question. It is hard to say how the audio quality will compare to your mixer, but this is decent. It isn't as good as my Sound Devices MixPre or ZOOM F6 recorders/mixers, but better than some of the lowest priced consumer grade products.

Why are pieces of cloth stuffed into the bass ports of those KRK Rokits?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 лет назад
Long story, but the short version is that lower-end monitors like the KRK Rokits tend to get a little crazy in terms of bass because the ports resonate at a fixed frequency and in my relatively small room, that creates issues. I have a couple of older videos on this if you're interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BbEL_h7XJT8.html

Curtis, awesome video! Two questions, since the 3.5mm plus is TRRS, will this still work with a mirrorless camera? I thought most cameras only work with TRS plugs and second, is there a difference with using this setup compared to using the line out from a ZOOM H4 recorder?
@curtisjudd

Thanks. Yes, this can be switched to camera mode to operate as a TRS output for cameras using its TRRS connector. This is smaller, and simpler to use vs. a handy recorder.

Crazy Hypothetical: Curtis, you got my brain doing all kinds of spinning...and I'm coming up with a crazy hypothetical that I hope you might be able to shine your knowledge on. Here's a boom rig I'm concocting in my head: NTG3 connected to the Saramonic SmartRig Plus...connected to the new Zoom F2 with 32 bit float recording (or even the Tascam DR10L)...all rigged on a boom pole. Is it naive of me to think this would work well and provide great sound for independent film? I'm thinking the 32 bit float would help my cause in this case...what do you think? Would there be an unbalanced signal issue here? Maybe something other than the Saramonic work best for this purpose? Please advise.
@curtisjudd

Hi Javier, the Saramonic would be the dynamic range limiting factor in this signal chain. But you could still make decent recordings with that setup, will just need to optimize your gain level.

Hey Curtis - great review. I have an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II. Would you recommend this device or a recorder like the LS-100 for event coverage like a wedding? Is it risky to use a 3.5mm cable to connect an XLR device to a camera instead of something like the XLR-1 adapter on the GH5 that connects through the hotshoe? I already have a Zoom H1 recorder, and I just got a Tascam DR-10L to try it out. I know XLR is a necessity for some kinds of work, but is it really necessary for this kind of work? I was only thinking of using my camera's audio with a 3.5mm shotgun mic for scratch and ambient audio, but I'm no expert as to whether that's a good idea.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 2 года назад
The main advantage of XLR cables is that you can run longer cables with less risk of picking up interference. If you’re not having that issue, then keep doing what you’re doing. Another reason to switch is to use higher quality microphones.

Thanks a lot for the review! I've got a question. I covered a workshop recently and I connected my canon m50 directly to the sound mixer (3.5mm to 1/4" TRS Cable). I got the sound but the hiss was coming with it as well quite significantly. Even when you used the Saramonic Smartrig in this video with the shure and the other mic, there was quite a bit of hissing sound. What can be done there to avoid it the next time?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 2 года назад
I haven't used the m50 before so I don't know if it is that which is creating the hiss in your case, but the biggest thing one can do is use a higher quality recorder/mixer. And high quality cables. Saramonic is not know for it's amazingly clean preamplifiers or outputs.

Good stuff as always, Curtis. I really like this little device and another use great use case would be for lav mics into a smartphone for interviews. I get this question from podcasters and iRig has a great solution but it's one drawback is the lack of ability to split the channels. Do you know if the split channels (stereo) option works the same into a smartphone? Be curious if there's an app that recognizes the split. I guess I should let Sarmonic send me one of these;)

Ray Ortega The TRRS 3.5mm I/O port (headphone jack) on iPhones and I think all other smartphones supports two headphone level outputs (L & R), and one mic level input, so mono input only. iPhones can take stereo input only through the Lightning connector from a digital preamp like a MixPre-D or other USB capable device.
@were2man

Mr Curtis, 1. how to check the mic specs if can be supported by this interface/adapter since there is limit in the gain setting? Does that mean this concern only apply to condenser mic, not the dynamic mics? Or still need this type of device to adjust the gain even for dynamic mics to boost the audio signal to camera or phone? There are videos about connecting a dynamic mics to a phone via XLR to TRS adapter cable but have question whether the audio signal are enough to be recorded with no (phantom?) power. 2. Could you advise any good and simple or 2 channels mixer/interface (example Behringer Xenyx 802 and Yamaha MG06)? Thanks
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
Hi Joshua, 1) This interface will be fine for MOST condenser microphones in terms of its ability to provide enough gain. It will not be ok for many dynamic microphones because they generally require MORE gain. 2) I like the Mackie VLZ4 mixers - purely analogue mixers. If you need one that has a USB output, I'm not as familiar with those. You might check Ray Ortega's channel for details on those. Best wishes!

Hi Curtis, just picked up the smartrig+ and tried it with my Azden proxd with the standard lav mic. I've noticed it delivers a nice jucy audio signal but there seems to be a lot of hiss/hum that comes with the signal relative to the gain dial position. The signal is going from the smartrig in to my canon hf-r500 camcorder I'm wondering if this is normal and you would just clean this up in post. You commented the preamps were fairly quiet on the smartrig so this is why I'm wondering if this is normal relative to the gear I'm using or this is completely abnormal and there should be no hiss/hum whatsoever? Hi Charles, correct, the app is likely the culprit do no monitoring while recording but even those that do often do so with a fair bit of latency so they’re a bit disorienting. Also, phones generally only take mono input via their 3.5mm jacks. To record stereo, you generally need one of the dedicated microphones which attach via lightning or USB and have two inputs or stereo mics like the Shure Motiv line of microphones. Good luck!

Curtis, thanks for delivering BIG on your promise to review this product!!! My interest lies in the best set-up for interviewing people (both in-studio and "on the street"). I want to use my iPhone 7 w/Filmic Pro and my Rode NTG-2 mic. With that said, I'm curious if you've tested the SmartRig+ with your NTG-2? If so, what were your results? Also, for shooting indoors, would you recommend the Rode Video Mic Pro over the NTG-2? Last question: if I'm interviewing two people using the SmartRig+ to record on separate channels, would you recommend using recording into a device like the Zoom H1 in order to keep tracks separate since it appears that the tracks will be merged into one track going straight in my iPhone?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Hi Keith, you're welcome! I have not specifically tested it with my NTG2 but I wouldn't anticipate any issues as the SmartRig+ seems to deliver in terms of relatively clean gain. The NTG2 will do fine indoors if you keep it within about 12 to 18 inches of the talent and the room is not too reverberant/echo-y. Yes, the stereo feature, it turns out, only works on devices which support stereo input like the H1. Phones only support mono input. One other discovery made since I posted the review - on my copy of the SmartRig+, monitoring didn't seem to work when switched to output for phone. Works great when set to camera, but wasn't working for phone for some reason. Not sure whether something's broken or that's part of the design. Will look into that more. Best wishes!

And would the Saramonic Smartrig+ power the CMIT-5U the way it is supposed to so you could run into your mirrorless camera? Hi Patrick, that’s an interesting combination - a $2000+ microphone and $100 plastic audio adapter. If you’re going to spend on a Schoeps, I’d probably look at least at a Zoom F4 or Sound Devices MixPre-3 so that you’d get the benefits of improved audio quality. Ok, that's a pretty good setup. I'd say you're good for now. Yes José, this would be good for that. Note it works best with condenser microphones vs. dynamic microphones. Good luck!

Really good review Curtis. Many thanks. It prompted me to try one and I think I may have found an 'issue' with the Tascam DR05 when using it. The two of them don't seem to get on so well so that the Tascam ticks away with digital noise once the Saramonic is plugged into it. Turning recording volume down lessens it but levels have to be very carefully balanced between the Saramonic output and the Tascam input. No issue at all with the Zoom H1 where the mic noise is possibly the most obvious thing to appear rather than the preamp noise.
@curtisjudd

Thanks for the insight Ian, very good to know!

Further checking and seen that the Tascam only takes a mic in unlike the Zoom which doubles up as mic/line. Am going to try an attenuator after the preamp feed.

hi curtis, i want to buy this SmartRig+ unfortunately i can't find a local store here in PH that sells one. I want to ask if i can use SR-AX100 or SR-PAX2 as alternative, using a TRS to TRRS adapter cable, like the Rode SC7.. thank you..

Unfortunately, not out of the box. You'd have to use an XLR splitter to feed the microphone's signal into both inputs.

Thanks Michael. One thing to note, you'll want to test to make sure you don't get too much drift on long interviews/takes. With my iPhone 7+, I was able to shoot for about 20 to 25 minutes without any noticeable drift, but some have complained of drift when shooting longer interviews in the 1+ hour range. Best wishes!

Hi Curtis, I know that is a old video but just now I noticed that you covered your monitor's bass reflex tube. Why is that ?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 лет назад
A mixing mentor of mine (Mike Senior via his book Mixing Secrets) suggested that most reference monitors priced at under $1000 don't have enough engineering in them to work well with bass ports. So I measured my room with and without them blocked and found that the bass response was a little cleaner with them blocked. Probably a bunch of people will tell Mike and me that we're crazy. But it works for me. Mike's book is mostly focused on mixing music but I found it immensely helpful: amzn.to/2nD9qna

Loved the review man thank you! I’m curious to know if I can use a speaker output and plug into this to record what comes out the speaker instead of putting a mic on the speaker. In my mind it seems like it would work. The speaker would technically be a “mic” to the saramonic
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 года назад
It depends on the speaker and what level it outputs. It might possibly work if you change the input on this to instrument.

Mr, Judd, I really appreciate the depth of your videos. Which makes me wonder what I am doing wrong. I purchased not one, but two of these, but I did not find that they offered any real clean gain when pushed a little less than halfway. I tried them with a BOYA BY-M1 , Audio-Technica ATR3350iS, and a movo vxr4000 pro, and I got noise. I tried them with my 6D and T3i. and still got noise. I tried, cranking up both channels individually with nothing connected to the smartrigs, and still got noise just before the halfway mark. In fact, the only thing I havent done is try using xlr mics. Maybe I should just go with the SR AX107 or 104?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Hi, there are a few potential things to consider there. The ATR3350 is a noisy mic and I hear the same of the Boya and Movo. So for those, the mic is probably the limiting factor. I'm not sure that you'll get better performance with those and the Smartrig+. The main benefit would be the ability to mix two mics to one input. My testing focused primarily on the XLR inputs which worked pretty decently with phantom powered shotgun microphones. You might have better luck with the SR AX107 or 104 but I'm afraid the mics you listed will be the limiting factor.
@victorloganjr8797
@victorloganjr8797 7 лет назад
Much appreciated. I'm on a budget, so I'm going to look into other options that are not going to be as noisy- either the Rode M5, the Samson CO2s', or something good within that price range and performenace. Ill be using them primarily indoors for my videos. Only thing is some of the spaces I work in are filled with reverb and such.
