So if you were trying to interview 1 person in a crowd of people would it pick up all the background noise?

Because the handheld mic is directional (cardioid) and dynamic, it excels at minimizing background noise like this. A cardioid dynamic microphone is the best choice for minimizing background noise outside. Just make sure you get a foam windscreen for outdoors, like this: www.saramonicusa.com/collections/wind-protection/products/sr-hm7-ws2 or any windscreen that will fit 1-5/8" Inside Diameter.

I have the Saramonic UHF Wireless handheld. I just discovered the 2nd icon on the mic itself. It looks like an audio meter graph. It doesn't turn the mic power off and on , instead it turns the sound off & on!! What is the purpose of this? I just shot a live event not realizing that I had turned the mic sound off.

It's the mute button. If you engage the mute button the wireless transmission icon will disappear, what you said looks like an audio meter graph. Mute functionality is needed for users who need privacy for a moment or have to cough and don't want it going out to the system If the wireless transmission icon is not there, you are muted. I hope that helps.

I can understand that, sorry about that. Make sure to let your subjects know about it, so they can avoid pressing it by accident. Our higher-end system the UwMic9 has a mute button lock, but it is a bit more money $279.
