When it comes to understanding the depth of Sikh scripture, the Sri Sarbloh Granth offers a unique and enlightening perspective. In this podcast episode, we are honored to be joined by Jvala Singh, a lecturer at UC Berkeley, creator of The Suraj Podcast, author of “54 Punjabi Proverbs,” and a PhD holder.
Together, we delve into the intriguing world of this revered scripture. We begin with an overview of the Sri Sarbloh Granth, discussing its origins, the languages used, and the five chapters it comprises.
We explore the historical context, examining when it was written and the debates surrounding its authorship. What are the primary arguments for and against attributing the Sarbloh Granth to Guru Gobind Singh Ji, and who are the other possible authors? We dive into these compelling questions and more, exploring the notable differences among various manuscripts, the connections between the Sarbloh Granth, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, and Dasam Granth.
Additionally, we examine how the Sarbloh Granth has influenced Sikh practices and beliefs, and its significant role in shaping the Sikh community.
Join us as we uncover the rich tapestry of historical insight and scholarly analysis, offering a deep dive into the Sri Sarbloh Granth and its impact on Sikh literature and culture. This conversation promises to be both enlightening and thought-provoking, revealing the power and significance of this lesser-known yet vital text.

We owe a great deal to Prof. Jvala Singh for his remarkable research on Sikh literature and history. His in-depth study of the Sarbloh Granth has brought a much-needed clarity and insight into this wonderful text. Due to his efforts, we can better understand and appreciate the Granth's spiritual, cultural, and historical importance. An awesome podcast as always! ✨

The way Guru Gobind Singh Ji plays with language and concepts relating to the Divine is so hard to understand, but you navigate it so well. Both of you keep plugging your stuff and let us know how we can contribute $. WjkkWjkf🙏

In a recent katha by giani Sher Singh ji he mentions how baba santa Singh told him that harnam das udasi was originally a Nihang Singh who travelled all the way to places like Tibet, China, Arabia etc in order to learn the 52 languages that are said to be within sarbloh Granth and that essentially he would convert to the local religion in order to learn and than when he came back essentially a mona he put on udasi garb and finished his work on sarbloh, and that he was scared to go back to the Nihang Singh’s as essentially he wasn’t exactly a Singh anymore. Baba santa Singh invited him and paid him extremely handsomely for those times and that’s how the the only academic work we have on sarbloh Granth came about. So fascinating!

Thanks for this, my only criticism would be is not tackling why this text was removed head on as that sheds light onto the modern thought. Sri Sarbloh and Dasam Granth ji are being forgotten on purpose as they link sikhi to the greater sanatan culture its from. The concepts of Shiv and the devas being cowards etc are no different from certain hindu schools of philosophy and mythological tales and these have great deeper meanings. As a soldier myself, understanding these as martial texts makes all the difference as their teachings can be employed in a variety of difficult situations. These are amazing texts and without delving into them with an unbiased open mind and understanding of the culture they emerged from a true appreciation and understanding can never be reached. That cannot be done by many 'modern' separatist Sikh groups.....hence parts are picked out which they like and then others like 'Sri Maya Lakshmi ji ki sahai' are denied. This simply doesn't work.
@RamblingsofaSikh
@RamblingsofaSikh Месяц назад
Thank you for your feedback. I strive to be honest to the material. Your point about not addressing why the text was removed is well taken, as it sheds light on modern perspectives - this is something we will certainly include in part 2. The connection between Sri Sarbloh Granth, Sri Dasam Granth, and the broader culture is significant, and understanding these texts in their entirety is crucial for a comprehensive appreciation. Delving into these works with an unbiased and open mind, considering their cultural context, is essential for true understanding. I completely agree that selectively accepting parts while denying others, such as ‘Sri Maya Lakshmi ji ki sahai,’ does not provide an accurate representation.

I have a question as well. I've heard that Sarb Loh and Dasam Granth should be regarded as the shoulders while Aad Granth Sahib is the head. When was the depiction made of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in front of Dasam and Aad made and why wasn't Sarbloh also shown? Are there records or reason to believe that Sarb Loh Granth was raised in darbar along with the other two granths?
@yilts9748
@yilts9748 Месяц назад
Sikhs are not into ooga booga Hinduism. In Dasam Saroop, Krishan and Shiva are killed by Khadag Singh. Dasam Paatshah took us away from all this BS. Stop trying to insert it back.
@TheCookieGamer523
@TheCookieGamer523 Месяц назад
@@harijotkhalsa9496 The original Granth that was meant to be in the Darbar was a text called the Vidya Sagar. The Vidya Sagar had Ad, Dasam and Sarbloh Granth plus some more Bani, it was so big that it took several Singhs to move it. The original Vidya Sagar manuscript was lost after the location it was kept was attacked by the Mughals. Maharaj then decided to split the text up into 3 separate texts for easier transportation and safe keeping. This is the argument for why all 3 Granths should be on the darbar.

Guru Ji is not making fun of Shiva, Vishnu etc when they run away, when the formless absolute truth takes a form such as this, they have devotees who make mistakes, because of these mistakes even Shiva, Vishnu etc endure this for the sake of their devotees mistakes. The absolute truth in form is easier to relate to and love and the end objective is to fall in love the absolute truth - jin prem kiya tin he prabh paya- Sargun and Nirgun are both god, it doesn't matter with which one you fall in love with. We are not a Abrahamic type of thought, our teachings contain all the ancient 6 schools of spiritual knowledge 6 gur 6 updes, all these do contradict each other but still take us home

Well done, lots of respect for Jvala. But the gods becoming scared and lessons from it are often shown in hindu mythology. Totally agree with this point. It's all intertwined and nothing wrong with that.
@harijotkhalsa9496
@harijotkhalsa9496 Месяц назад
Agreed. I think it's good to consider 3 thing: -Aad Guru Granth both heaps praise on Lord Krishna in bhagat bani as well as Gurus themselves -Gurus also offer criticisms of the likes of Krishna -Gurus also put themselves as slaves, Guru Gobind Singh says 'nahi mo say gareeb...' and 'jo ham ko parmesar uchareh..' The lesson seems to me that anything, no matter how divine, that exists in the physical world is temporary. While there can be value in respecting such temporary divinity we must not be attached to it.

Guru Ji is making fun of Shiva absolutely. Guru Gobind Singh Ji in Dasam Saroop first calls Krishan an avatar of Vishnu, and then kills Krishna and Shiva at hands of a mythological character, Khadag Singh. It is Guru Sahib burying the Brahminism ooga booga and giving rise to a Khalsa away from way of the Brahmin. Nirgun and Sargun are gift of Bhagat Kabir Ji, he is the one who decodified the Akaal Purkh for us and Gurus took it forward. How do you people associate it with any Brahmin schools?
