In this video, we emphasize the importance of adopting a thought process that allows you to apply technique to all the many approaches of art. Art is no one-size-fits-all, a consistent thought process is key to merging varied techniques.
To illustrate this, we look at the importance of understanding value changes from light to dark and how this impacts the colors you choose for painting. Much like the the lemon exercise in our program, we demonstrate how colors can change from yellow to orange, then to red and violet -- which the color shift and change in value, the progression of colors shows how these colors can differ in intensity and temperature.
We juxtapose colors and varies the degree of blending depending on how far the subject is from the viewer. In this specific example, I prefers bristle brushes for their ability to apply paint without smearing, emphasizing that a medium's texture can significantly affect the painting's outcome.
Learning from past masters like Sargent and Velasquez inform this approach. With a Velasquez-inspired study that I did, I noticed the importance of not just value but also temperature and color in every stroke. And Sargent's technique involves making each stroke with intention, using a unique combination of color, temperature, and value. This observation led to an understanding that if you leave something in a painting that isn't crucial, it can negatively impact the entire piece.
Every mark you make, and every intensity or temperature change, guides the viewer's eye and helps tell the story of the painting. This mindset shapes the core of the Art Secret Studio's teaching philosophy.
