What an amazing channel. Really, really, really good videos on this channel. Wondering why there are so less subscribers on this channel. This channel deserves millions of subscribers. Keep it up.
Really great. It's like pelagianism controversy a little bit. Ultimaately you need to ask: Do you have a choice to make? If so, than it doesn't matter how you were "shaped" by environment. If you had a choice and you made it (you really can't escape making a choice if you have it) than you created you. So we may say you co-create your essence, but it is more, cause the sum of influences that shaped you without your choice is not... YOU! It's just a mere part or reflection of environment, what is really YOU starts with YOUR first real choice and than you create you. So YOU in that part which is an answer or reaction to part that was ingrained in you. So we differentiate the part of YOU that comes from outside (aka environment) and part of YOU which is an effect of your every choice you can't avoid to make. We are not responsible for the first part, but the first part is not US. We are creators nor followers, we create ourselves, not realizing imposed plan. In that case something new appear in the world. And if we choose not to choose than we create a pattern of a human which is uncreative, passive, which is not human per se.
I always teach my translation students that when they translate, they have full freedom to make choices. Even if I suggest corrections, I would only explain why I am making changes. It is up to them to agree or disagree. They have full freedom but are fully accountable as well.
We bear the complete responsibility for our choices. That actually makes me happy every day. It is a big responsibility but it makes life so rich and meaningful. To me being a helpless toy in the hands of fate is a depressing idea, not freedom. I love freedom!
Sartre (later in life) would agree more with John. He was deeply influenced by other existentialists that focused on the specific cases of feminism and civil rights. The core idea 'existence precedes essence' is still valid for the individual but can lead to bigotry when applyed generally within a society.
Great channel. The previous background that you have will influence your choices per sure, however, you are totally responsible for your choices. This thought that there isn't free will to any degree just creates spoiled people that don't assume responsibility for their choices.
Our experieces mold us and our generations. The evolution takes palce when experiences and choices of our ancestors mold our generation. We have choice to certain limit- the limit is our body. We can choose as much as it allows us.
I think everything has a determined outcome, based on prior experience and knowledge gained, and actions done. I think we can all make choices. However, it will ultimately lead us to a specific outcome.
There's a really good documentary similar to this topic called Three Identical Strangers, I think you might be able to catch it on Netflix. Highly recommend this doc. Delves into the nature VS. nurture debate
William Ernest Henley, the poet who wrote “Invictus” sums up the Existentialist philosophy beautifully : “I am the Master of my Fate, I am the Captain of my of my Soul”. At every moment we are Free to choose, even in the most dire circumstance where the results of a bad or unwise choice could bring about horrible consequences.
i am still working on my existence and essence to mould and shape and develope ovall as a person with and Identity. it takes time i guess like rome was not built in one day. the thing is how soon or longer and how much time we will exist and our essence will be recognised for what we are. for that I guess we need a market or a place where our existence can be seen and so we are recognised with our essence.
Sink or swim? Tossed into a backyard pool or dropped into a stormy sea? Having everything handed to or fighting for the next breath? Having a helping hand or being backed into a corner? Nature or nurture? The anguish of freedom is that freedom is not always what it cracked up.
Make a video on Nominalism. It precedes and causes all philosophy that followed after it. Thanks for your channel. Love it. Are you going to straighten the mat?
Thank you for the suggestion, we will definitely look into this. Glad you like the channel 😀. The mat is just a standard prop within the animation software, but we find it funny how many comments it generates so we might just keep it to be cheeky 😂
Great video! Just a suggestion, you could consider doing a series on Philosophy of Language next. It would be great to see Frege, Russell and Quine feature on this channel (Wittgenstein already has once).
Thank you for the recommendations. We have covered the Frege-Geach problem, we will definitely look into the rest. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7Wg1l7_ldf4.html
Nice discussion, but what is meant by free choice. I you think the choices aren't determined in some ultimate sense, are they just random? Or is there some other option?
8:15 yup, but as Camus said, the true meaning of being existentialist is to rebel ... even though the life is meaningless, like you said, that some people may have genetics or backgrounds that affect the future (facticities).. in the end of the day, we are the one who gives and create the meaning of one's life.
Sartre projected his ideas unto his philosophy. If you want to be anxious follow him because he gives man 100%responsibility and more. Too Scary for cowards
@@2tehnik My only point was that the power of intuition is nothing to be argumentatively discarded because it is what allows us tp argue in the first place.
@@hendrikstrauss3717 you can't say all intuitions are on the same level because of that though. rational intuition can tell me the derivative of e^x is e^x and that's basically undoubtable and necessary, but claims like "I have free will" or "external reality exists in itself" aren't undoubtable or necessary, hence why they are brought into question in the first place. the existentialist still has to provide an argument for the existence of libertarian free will (especially libertarian free will since compatibilism easily becomes incompatible with existentialism (as the video shows))
@@2tehnik hmmm... I've never thought about existentialism and compatibilsm being incompatible. Atleast what existentialism has been to me is the innate meaninglessness of the world around, and our being forced to give some narrative structure to the world. Seems artistically and philosophically true to me. I actually think even Kantianism is compatible with the aforementioned.
There is one issue you didn't address: if we do NOT have a choice and choices arise ONLY from essence, then we do NOT bear any responsibility for our actions, our lives and ANY consequences that come from these choices. I think that - whatever essence you throw in - is a worse than any alternative.
That's a very weak attempted take down of existentialism. You are always choosing your attitude. Your childhood does not dictate (it might influence it, but that's a long way from 'determining' it) your choice of attitude as an adult. Just because you don't remember making a choice, does not mean you didn't make it. There could be lots of people born gifted, but their choice of attitude etc means they didn't develop it and we/the world never got to know that they were born gifted. Existence not only precedes essence, but who said that there is even an essence at all? That's not a given.
