Saruman the White was the first of the order of Wizards (or Istari) who came to Middle-earth as Emissaries of the Valar in the Third Age. For a time he was the chief of the Heren Istarion, as well as the head of the White Council.
Curunir studied too long the arts of the Enemy and began to admire him as a rival and not a foe. Then he left the path of wisdom and fell from his high purpose. Basically Sarumn delved into the dark knowledge of Sauron and his arts and slowly began to admire them. That was the start of his long fall into evil.
