Hi Phil. I hope you read this. I had a very similar "upbringing", Glen House, Medina Unit etc, plus many more. I ended up going a different route and my life was f*cked up for decades. I'm still not really living life, but mine should have gone: Cadets, Paras, SAS then, onwards. Not abuse, Kid's homes, noncey Boarding School, Youth Custody then Prison. Just goes to show how tiny differences can affect your whole life. Respect to you, Brother.

He saved my life,him personally,durning a bomb explosion in North Ireland,I only found out about this when I read his book in 2022,he talked about the situation,the bomb,the vehicle,i had never heard it from the other side before,it was a trauma but to hear after 30 years someone else involved,and for that person to have saved my life,I want to meet this man and shake his hand,I want to thank you Phill.
@stephenalex4345
@stephenalex4345 Год назад

@jpfox4329
@jpfox4329 Год назад
@@stephenalex4345 yes I am ok talking about it,I had always talked growing up about the bomb,and being so close to being killed at 11 or 12 years old,I alone with an older man were the only two involved in it,I never got to speak to the older man,there were others involved in the situation,like the police ( RUC ) and you don't get to talk to them in those days,it was just something that happen the situation was dealt with,my parents never discussed it with me either,but I do know my father tried to get in touch with the local IRA ( how set the bomb ) to complain,but was advised not to for his own safety. So it was buried,and never spoke about,I think when you are young you just get on with things,I was a very outgoing child. I always remembered the bomb van,the colour,and the registration, even know I was rushed past it by the police,after it had partly exploded,this was the only was out of the building I was in ( a snooker hall,right beside the police station - the bomb target ) The bomb was made safe by the bomb guy,Phill Campion was then clearing the seen and found a second booby trap detonator,and got the bomb made safe,if he hadn't have found it,we were all gone,it was a massive bomb. I was working last summer renovating a shop ( I am a builder ) listing to his book on audio ( the book reading app ) and he started talking about his near death experience wile serving in northern Ireland,there was two incidents, first one he talked about then started to talk about the second,the year,the road,the van the colour....my body covered in goosebumps and I froze,which felt like forever,because I had always been the person explaining what had happen,to hear someone else who was there and learn the seriousness of what could have happen,and for that person to have saved my life was emotional,I think I cried after 30 odd years. That's it really.

@@jpfox4329 Crazy isnt it, that "everyday life" in Ireland involved the potential for death, every day.... Walk to school, you might not make it... My Irish friend, lost her neice to an attack, her neice was 18 and drove over a bridge that got taken out...she was a direct hit... I was too young at the time to understsnd what that devastation meant.... Yet, you too would understand the trauma for kids living in war zones... As an Irish man from a nationalist community in NI there would be a lot of anamosity towards ex BSF members in particular. During the time he mentioned and before it was an uneasy situation for all involved with grey areas in almost every scenario. I'm thankful those times are gone. What I will say is this man's strength of character is astounding. It's clear how his personality and outlook would be ideal for a soldier or anyone who is constantly in high stress and oftentimes depressing environments. I'm glad he is here to tell his story and hope he has a long and peaceful future. Take care of yourself and thanks for sharing your story. 💚

Yes, there is more than one side to the situation in Ireland. An old man, formerly in the IRA, said that these people who are calling themselves soldiers now are nothing of the sort. They are gangsters
@wardygrub
@wardygrub Год назад
Hello. When you say ‘those times are gone now’, are they really? Us English, as kids, were not educated about the troubles or any of Irish history (including how William of Orange and Tudor chums tried to “outbreed the Catholics’). We watched footage on TV which bred resentment. We are so naive/ ignorant. But I studied it a tiny bit and was told I’m related to the Collins family (another story) and the only right conclusion I come to is that Ireland belongs to the Irish - all of it! X
@cerberus1321
@cerberus1321 Год назад
@@wardygrub thanks for the reply. When I say those times are gone now they are 'mostly'. There are still dissident republicans that use a threat and acts of violence to police and other establishment (UK gov/crown) institutions. There are also loyalist paramilitaries that use a mask of politics to justify their existence when in actual fact they are organised crime gangs that are only interested in dealing drugs and exploiting their community. The landscape has changed entirely since the good Friday agreement with 99.99% of the population in opposition to any organisation that use methods outside of legitimate political channels (ballot box). There are idiots in any society but people here generally have a lot of respect for people in the other community and really do not appreciate bigots in their midst. Usually the biggest bigots enter the political arena in some shape or other though which is unfortunate and stifles progress. Without going into the cause and effect of the troubles here I would not want the 50% of the population that consider themselves British to join a united Ireland unless they were comfortable with it. To me they are Irish with a strong British heritage and Irish nationalists need to embrace and treasure that part of their culture. Irish identity does not consist of only one story or part. In a weird way I'm proud of the progress that has been made by everyone here in a relatively short period of time (30 years) and I think its a testimate to the attitudes of the people that live here.

This guy is a TRUE LEGEND. Our two bob bit footballers get untold following and wealth, but our genuine heroes get left behind. BIG P C should be in the school curriculum.

What an absolutely fantastic episode. One of those ones I saw pop up and was going to save for a later listen. I watched the first 10 minutes and I was hooked. I love all the SF guys but Phil is a special character who definitely needs a break. Incredibly entertaining and funny, a natural down to earth storyteller. I hope things start happening for the big fella. Much respect. ♠️

We need more people on tv like Phil not less, his story is so familiar and the problem is it was thought of as the norm back in the day.

Absolutely fantastic. Had to press pause until I stopped laughing, because I was in stitches, at the lollipop job offer from the daftie in the job centre. Phil’s humour is a real attribute to him - and fantastic to watch - bellying a steeliness and clear intelligence of someone who left SF with still much more to achieve. Dodge is the Interviewer Supremo with undoubtedly one of the best guests so far. Phil is an excellent ambassador for the best characters to come out of the forces, and the truth that needs to be told about life, but so often isn’t. It is so refreshing to watch and listen to him across his media platforms. Especially as he shares his personal and career evolution. And his book, which I have recently got, will be a great read. People like Phil - there are a few about if you are lucky enough to bump into them; each one of them unique, multi-talented, and endlessly fascinating - are an inspiration and a credit to their country. Often highly performing but over-looked by those higher up the ranks, and in Civvie Street, unnecessarily targeted by over-zealous Police on a bad day, using trumped up charges, and who have no idea of what it actually takes to be a disciplined and highly efficient operator for the British authorities with little thanks. Unfortunately, his is not the only story of the Police acting in this way. And it is good that it was covered in the interview. Veterans are often misunderstood and left unsupported when the opposite should be happening. Respect to Mr Campion and his fantastic partner who clearly is his stoicist supporter. And thank you Dodge for providing such a platform for truth and hilarity, and inspiring, gripping stories of daring deeds and lifetime experiences most of us will never have. To live them through the interviews on your podcast is a real treat. The best to Phil and Wendy. Looking forward to when you have Big Phil Campion back on! NB. Also, Phil demonstrated great insight, knowledge, and compassion towards the situation in Northern Ireland. This is unusual in most people, let alone an ex-forces person. His big heart is incredible given the lack of love and compassion he experienced growing up. Born good.

Wow what lovely words about Big Phil and he’s one hell of a human being! It also makes me happy that I can give people a platform to tell their story whilst trying to get the best out of our guests. Good man 👍🏼👍🏼

One of the best interviews I've seen. I've got nothing but respect for anyone who has served in the forces, but a lot of former special forces guys can come across as rather stern, and rightly so. The life or death game is a serious one. This guy though! What a character. You could meet this man in a pub and you'd never know. Genuine salt of the earth geezer. To come through a life like that and still be such a live wire. Respect!
