We look at the best Camellia for Hedges or Privacy, its new and its name is Camellia sasanqua Slimline Avalanche
Camellia Avalanche is a white flowering Sasanqua type that has a natural upright and narrow growth habit and is one of the best evergreen hedge plants or screening plants available.
Camellia sasanqua Slimline Avalanche will reach 3 - 4 metres in height, spread to around 1 metre and is very easy to prune.
Deep green foliage with contrasting double white flowers in autumn to winter make this a very useful plant for topiary, espalier as well as for use as a feature plant.
Small foliage and short internodes make this easy to prune and it looks great year round.
It grows well in a humus rich soil and is suited to full sun to part shade in a humus rich well drained soil.
Fertilise in spring and again in autumn and mulch around the plant to maintain a cool moist root run.
The plants in the video were filmed in the stock plants area of Rhodo Glen Nursery as well as newly planted Camellia Avalanche in a private garden.

How are these plants during summer in Melbourne? I want to plant them in a garden bed which gets sun from around 7am - 3pm then full shade from 3pm due to double storey house next door. What's your views?

That should work well as they will get some relief from hot summer sun late in the day. However without knowing soil conditions and where you are located it is hard to be precise.

Just beautiful! Does it prefer neutral soil or...? I’d really like to have these as a hedge💕

Slightly acidic however neutral would be OK with normal camellia type fertilisers, from what we have seen very adaptable. We liked it so much we removed bamboo and put in a Camellia Avalanche Hedge.

johnny A well I just love this look. I can’t imagine how much work was involved in taking out the bamboo though😅

Hi. How long did this particular hedge take to grow to that height? I planted a row of camellias along my fence line last spring, they are about 60cm high so far. I cant wait untill they are fully grown! (I live in NZ).

Around 5 - 6 years from planting.

How long does it take to reach 7 feet high? I am thinking to use camellia hedge for one side of the property and the other sides will be Ligustrum. But my landscaper doesn’t like the idea, he told me the growth of camellia will be a lot slower than ligustrum. I live in South Carolina U.S.

(We assume you are talking about Ligustrum undulatum or 'Box Leafed Privet')) not the invasive species. With Cameliias they will be slower, I would guess as 4 years, maybe 5 to 7ft but this depends on the variety. Some are faster growing than others HOWEVER, you will have better flowers and lower maintenance with a camellia hedge than with the Ligustrum undulatum. On the other hand, Ligustrum undulatum will prune to a more formal shape than the Camellia, so both have advantages. They are two different looks and it depends on what you like the look of, and the growth rate you can tolerate. ALSO, some people are allergic to Ligustrum flowers of SOME species, Hayfever being the main issue.

johnny A Hi Johnny, thank you so much for giving me such good information! I appreciate it. We planted ligustrum recurvifolium on half of my property (the backyard) last fall. Now we want to extend the hedge also to our front yard, that’s why I am thinking to use camellia hedge on one side. Can you recommend a most fast growing camellia variety? Also is it true Camellia grow well in part shade? A good thing is that the place where I live, Charleston SC, the camellias are growing everywhere. The low maintenance side of camellia hedge does attract me, that means a lot less work for my husband in the future😄 We have half an acre yard and to surround the whole thing, it does require a lot evergreen shrubs.

Hi Johnny, I really like camellias hedge, just wondering if it can grow well in my place Adelaide Hill Australia, I think the climate zone is 10. Thanks.

Not sure on that, do other camellias grow well in the area? Also, MAYBE ask Virginia Nursery who would know more about the soil and climate. The one on the video is in the Dandenong Ranges outside of Melbourne, so it gets good moisture especially in spring. We have planted one ourselves 1 year ago and it is doing well, however, again it gets good natural moisture.

What time of year can you transplant your Camellias in Victoria Australia Thank you

Best in autumn to winter, however smaller ones in early spring. You are best to give them time to develop new roots before summer. Also need to water through the first summer and any dry spells. Mulch around them as well.

I wish I could grow these, but they are not hardy in my northern climate 😔
@johnnyAGardening

Yes really only zones 7 - 9 SOME to zone 6. The 'Winter' and 'April' series are said to the most cold tolerant.
