We all need longer clamps from time to time, especially when it comes to long tables, beds, and the like. I love my lightweight aluminium clamps and they lend themselves to a simple option for creating longer clamps from shorter ones.
This video will take out the mystery and deliver a totally practical option for you at almost zero cost. Keeping life simple is always difficult but this option is doable in a matter of minutes.

Followed you advice, bought two “cheap” clamps from Harbor Freight and modified them as you said. Now have two good clamps that work very well. Thanks!

After watching many (if not all) of your older videos, I immediatly cut some wood “bars” as you called them, put them in my “sash” clamps and after several other woodworkers saw my clamps, they did it also. Of course I mentioned it was your idea Paul. Anyway, now I’ll be making more long bars and cutting up some new clamps….haha. Thanks!

Great Idea Paul. I never seem to have enough clamps when doing large projects and I have a ton of these cheap clamps around. Kinda reminds me of the old pipe clamps where you put the ends over galvanized or black pipe.

What I've done to extend pipe clamps is to rotate the tail jaws of two clamps 90 degrees and mate them together to make one longer clamp.

in the US you can get these style clamps at Harbor Freight for cheap and just put in wood as he shows in another video. He does a few other things as well.

Over the years I've acquired a few 3/4" pipe clamps, some very good ones. Along with those in my constant search to scavenge, I picked up a considerable amount of 3/4" black pipe from a remodel demolition. A retired customer was downsizing, gave me a pipe threading setup, stand, dies, up to 2" pipe, sadly, a manual operation, but fully functional. A multitude of lengths, made to whatever project size. Yep, they're heavy, nope, not fancy parallel jaw clamps. I do have the same clamps you have modified, wood inserts as well, very good clamps for light to medium duty. My avatar pic is your desktop organizer, modified to modern use with the room for some electronics, reading glasses, etc... Definitely a Paul sellers inspired piece.

Fantastic. I really must throw out (sell!) my giant, heavy, bessey clamps. One of those purchases you make after watching too many woodworking videos! Whilst they're powerful, they're basically unmanoeuvreable when you have more than one or two. They were an excuse for my poor planing abilities when I first started out, where the goal was to pressure the panels into submission!

I have just found your channel and have already watched several hours of video. I appreciate your working with hand tools instead of electric planes, routers, tablesaws, etc. Many of us do not possess those and it is off-putting when all other videos assume we do. Your videos are very easy to follow. Keep on producing this content.

Pipe clamps serve the purpose very well and effectively. With them you will have up to 9 1/2’ of clamping space for those wide or long wooden panels. 2:01
