You don't have to bring down Kenan Thompson to bring a new female up. Thats really detrimental to everything we accomplish. Please be a part of the solution, not part of the same, tired proof of when people say we keep each other down more than anything. Keenan - I love. Sasheer looks like she will be great. Why do you have to sow disrespect toward Keenan Thompson??
Sasheer's rise to prominence happened regardless of my snide comments towards Kenan. Kenan was proved wrong in the end. Make of it what you will but I stand by what I said. I think taking a sarcastic jab at someone who made a wholly disrespectful comment about black comediennes is rather minuscule in the grand scheme of things Either that or I'm quite over the whole concept of respectability politics.
Don't be the black man that has to disrespect Keenan, in order to bring Sasheer up. You weren't at the interviews, he was, lets embrace them both and start showing the world that we don't have to step on one to raise the other. Yes, I want most of us to be the bigger people, and I know its youtube and I cant expect much, but I'll still try.
I don't think I'm obliged to respect a man that made such a harsh generalisation. I don't believe I'm "stepping on him" or "disrespecting him" but perhaps that's because I personally believe that Kenan hasn't been as funny as I've seen him in previous works. I believe my flippancy is a lot more than just insult. After all, it was Kenan who said black women aren't funny enough to be on SNL. There are plenty of hilarious black comediennes - Jessica Williams (The Daily Show), Retta, Gabourey Sidebe just to name a few - but Sasheer got the job and I'm thrilled for her. However, I don't think my feelings that Sasheer is funnier than Kenan should be invalidated because it places Kenan in an unfavourable light.
Joseph Guthrie Im going to support Sasheer, and support Keenan. I wont instinctively try to villify him. You weren't there, maybe the people he saw weren't ready (which is probably the case). Sasheer you can tell from her videos is a great funny talent, and the 1 chance she got, she WON, because she was ready. They don't just take anybody, and they shouldn't. This woman is great and deserves it, and Im not going to dog Keenan out for his remarks. Its really not helpful to us or anyone watching us.
ten years ago, it was Kenan Thompson who's name was read by Don Pardo last, back when he was a featured player, right before "Musical guest".... or in some shows. "A Cartoon by Robert Smigel". Now it's Sasheer Zamata. New for 2014.
Denver loves UCB comics! Comedy Works Denver is excited to welcome hilarious SNL star Sasheer Zamata August 15th and 16th! You won't want to miss her! Tickets and info here: www.comedyworks.com/comedians/784
This is great. She should go on last comic standing or try to get on comedy central. I saw her featured on some documentary from HULU and googled from there.
The cast should include 1 of every race and dynamic. Like the back of a 1990's cereal box. Girl, Boy, White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Cripple, Red Head, Mentally challenged and a homosexual sprinkled in here or there. But its appalling not to see any albinos. anyone else agree? SNL needs an albino
I hope it works out for her. Black or white she is going to have a tough time getting airtime with all of the other great female cast members already established there. Hopefully they'll write for her or I fear she'll just end up being an Update impressionist like Jay Pharaoh.
Sorry but I don't think this girl is funny... I know people will disagree but I have seen at least 3 other sketches with her either alone or in a group plus her doing a stand up routine... IJS... I think SNL did a safe pick to shut down the controversy... there are quite a number of other black comedic actresses they could have gone with... my opinion...
About her comments regarding advertising: I can see how she would be offended by the adverts, because she's probably a whole lot more educated than the majority of the USA (and also african americans). But the thing with adverts, is that if they dont WORK, the product doesn't sell. If Home Depo is still doing well then those adverts worked :s The fact that they work makes me somewhat depressed, but you can't have a go at the advert... if it works...thats just getting angry at the reality of the world we live in. I'd appreciate anyone's comments on this.
I expect that most advertising, regardless of the demographic, targets the lowest common denominator, and it is a bit depressing. It's funnier to focus on the black stereotypes of course; Home Depot uses black stereotypes to sell window treatments, and Sasheer uses black stereotypes to get laughs in her standup performances. The black stereotypes are obvious crowd-pleasers in both cases, so Sasheer can't be too mad about it.
