The iconic wooden grain elevators on the Canadian prairies are fast disappearing. Between the years 2001 and 2005, or so, I traveled in Saskatchewan stopping at any elevators that I could see to take their photos. This slideshow is an updated version of my earlier posting. There are 132 photos of elevators, which will take you eleven minutes to watch. They're alphabetical, so feel free to skip ahead to find the elevator that may be of interest.
I was born and raised on a farm in central Saskatchewan and spent a fair amount of time in the grain elevator during harvest and in between when the grain quotas would open and we could ship some grain. This was a common experience for farmers in bygone days. The elevators were built at distance to allow farmers to be able to get their horse-drawn wagons-full of grain to the elevator and back in the same day. Now, most of them have been torn down and replaced with giant cement storage facilities. They are much further apart from each other as trucks are able to carry large loads and travel a long distance to deliver the farmer's grain.
I hope this commemoration to prairie pioneers and farmers will resonate with you.
