I like narration for complicated restorations. Explanations for what and why you’re doing something helps me understand what is happening on screen. Especially for multi-part projects like this.
Damn… 4 years already 😮 I remember, when you took the coupe apart… Than from UK to Spain, the engine bay makeover of the touring. The M3 Series. When I saw you fixing the car with the absolut minimum of equipment back in the days, I was so motivated to fix my own touring, which is unfortunately a gigantic rust bucket! 😂 Keep it up, love from Germany ❤️🔥
I know right... Time flies! It's funny you should say that, Antonio (M3 owner) sent me some photos of him driving it in Spain. Its all done and I hope to meet up with him soon and do some filming. I'm glad i inspired you! And welcome to club. Its all part of the fun really :D Thanks, mate, much appreciated!
@@RestoreItthe funny thing about my Touring is: I started disassembling and then got stuck, 6 years ago. Now my grandma gave me her Sedan, also very rusty, cause she didn’t manage to drive without power steering. So I got some other e30 project in between my touring as well. I think it’s some kind of cycle. Whenever you get one e30, another one isn’t that far away. But man, great cars. Little bit rusty and thirsty sometimes ^^
I saw in a recent episode of M539 how the mirrors may not be able to be separated without drilling them out and then replacing the hollow bolt with a threaded one from a newer model.
The sunroof in my E30 coupe looked very similar when I pulled it off to address bubble rust on the top corners. I sprayed the rust chunks out with compressed air and shaking it around, and knocked down and treated all the visible rust. Paint and polish and back on the car, working well!
Im glad you put some music on during the timelapes. If I may give you one more tip; try to match the music db level with the db level of your voiceovers, that way we dont have to adjust the volume, and wont get scared when we visit a different video after :)
Cheers for the tip, Insane. I'm not too keen on music so I try to keep it quite, but I do get where you're coming from. I'll try the music at the same volume as the VO next time, cheers!
I totally love your videos and watch all of them from all the way over here in the land of nothing, Australia. I love the way that you go the extra mile to get a good result. Best wishes James :)
Hi, that cable is definitely for the pioneer or a Kenwood six disc CD changer back in the old days. It used to be controlled via the head unit and the cable with all the pins is what used to connect them. Are used to fit these for a living.
Nicely done 👌 about wing mirror there is tube joining two sections that is been flared at the end and can be cut but you will have to replace it with threaded tube or there is X5 version of mirrors repair kit, looks same but not sure
The spare cable is for a factory option cd changer that was usually a kenwood, and the wing mirrors won't separate from the base units without damage meaning you won't get them back together, i tried when i restored the 325i did, it is possible with newer models with a special tool that basically drills out the sleeve holding them together and anothe special tool to press in a new one with a new spring
LOVE THE PROGRESS!!! So excited to see the next episode, and I would definitely replace the sunroof component. Not so sure about the longevity of that fuel pump tho lol
Thanks for the feedback, Justin! I had a bit of a timing issue on this one which meant I didnt have much time for the script, I'll probably do some more talking in the next one.
I got a set of them brushes for the drill as i love cleaning my own cars, the one shaped like a toilet brush is the best thing EVER to clean car carpets, it got in to them rounded corner bits and sort of plumps the carpet back to brandnew looking... Omg reading that back sounds really sad 😂😂
Once the full exhuast is on and I put more than £6 worth of petrol in it, I think she'll be fine. The spark plugs needs changing at least, so it should only get better from here! Cheers!
I had a few delays behind the scenes but got there in the end! Glad you're enjoying it dude. The welder hasn't been picked up since you last saw me use it in the jimny episode. I still need to get used to the new one, but I'll be doing so during this series! :D
Yep 100% , that cable belongs to an Alpine CD stacker. Also, use a pressure washer next time to clean the old glue/foam from the roof liner. It takes a total of 3 minutes to do both sides. Only downside is you have to let it dry overnight.
@@RestoreIt Here in Australia with our dry climate, the damp is not an issue. Different story for U in the UK though. Nothing a heater can't take care of though.
Old Central locking systems are a pain. My 89 240 had that BS biodegradable wires and my whole master locking system on the driver door was corroded to the point the wires just broke into little pieces. Had to make multiple junkyard trips to find one that was salvageable
That is a DIN connector for a CD changer, likely an old Alpine unit. For mirrors, should be a large hollow bolt between the two pieces and an internal spring. May be an XZN triple square to remove the bolt - at least that's how it is on Porsche mirrors of same general vintage.
You can Check Out M539 restsurations...he showed Like 2 or 3 Times how to disassemble the mirrors. In a nutshell ITS Drilling Out the shaft and replace IT with a eBay Screw in shaft
That black wire on the backseat at 10:40 kinda looks like a plug I had on a old CD changer that was in the trunk. Perhaps check it out if it goes back to the radio
Hi @RESTOREIT. that plug looks like a plug a seen on a 750iL I had years ago. It may be a audio amp that may have been in the back. See if the cables go to behind the dash.
@@RestoreIt we couldn't get the radio to work. Was a really strange set up. All the speaker outputs went fron the stereo to the rear of the head unit all the way to the amp in the back then back through the car again to each speaker. Quite advanced for a g reg. We had bad Amos so had to make a patch lead that a guy made who works at rolls Royce. It was aircraft grade wire and it was 12 meters long in total to go everywhere. He estimated it was £1900 in wire lol. The car was only £480 as we used it for a scumrun rally round Europe fuel was really really bad but we did it in style lol.
@@RestoreIt if it was the amp the stereo won't work as it has to pass through the amp first and your speakers. If your speakers work then I would deffo say its a cd changer from either alpine or pioneer at the time.
Don’t waste time on those cracks. Headliners flop around out of the car so it will all crack again anyway but once in place they are solid. Get the new material on it and back in the car!
Hope you wore lots of breathing PPE when removing the foam. But oh boy that looked satisfying. Another great vid but like a few of the comments I prefer more talking on the car videos. When you restore little items and stuff like that I feel that’s where the silent videos shine, because you can turn em on and not think about it much, where as the car videos have more substance and cool stuff to talk about. Love the content tho
Spot on, thedlc. The main reason I didnt do a voice over on this one is because I ran out of time due to the brand deal deadline. I'm getting tired of brand deals and would like to move away from them. So i'll be doing a few things to aid that in the comming weeks and months. I have realised exactly what you said in your comment. Progress style episodes like this need a voice over and the start to finish projects don't. I'm totally with you. Cheers, mate.
If you look at the back of the glass you'll see 2 cables attached to it . These work like the defogger in your rear window. They are on all the time I think. Pretty useful in cold or rainy days@@RestoreIt
9:30 Man! It is very dangerous to use a vacuum cleaner to suck it out of the tank. Because gasoline vapors get directly into the vacuum cleaner motor, where there are very strong sparks!
My central locking failed and it was expensive. I hope that the fuse in the emergency module in the left footwell under the speaker is all that is wrong.
Thanks for the tip, Ben. I'm hoping so too. It did work when the central locking was installed, so maybe I just need to remove some more wiring or something. Its an annoying issue to have, for sure.
Haha, I know what you mean. But during that particular shot, I was still using my hand on the pedal which wasn't attached to the box. I thought it felt a looked weird also, but once attached properly, its all good. Cheers!
6:57 doesn't run, i thought "duhh, the fuel pump relay isn't there" but i guess somewhere in it's life it swapped places and is now in right side (white relay)
Yes it looks it... I think i'd have to cut out a section of the middle to make sure it was clean on the inside... Bit of a nightmare, but could be fun!
@@RestoreIt to match the color of the headliner better in this case, but could be any color melted lego. It’s how I restored the body work of a Citroën mehari. Works wonders
Sorry, I read the dashboard, not the headliner, haha. Sorry. Yes good idea. I still have it out and I'm waiting for the new fabric to be cut and sent to me.
Please - wear some gloves when handling any car fluids & tool fluids. They're in fact really hazardous and we just get used to them such that we don't care. They're not much to have on skin or breathe few times, but repairing as cars hobby or job in long term really gets to your health. This may be really cumbersome (with filming in meantime especially) but it's worth it? Side note: We don't think much of it, but also really exposed to chemicals as proffesionals are (especially art) painters, leaving them to many ailments in their later years.
Your plugs looked very dirty. Also check the air pipes incase they have holes or rips from air filter box back towards engine. Also by not having throttle cable connected the butterfly valve in throttle body would’ve been fully closed and thus starving engine of air. Once u connected that it started. I would flush fuel lines as well and clean injectors out. Probably have crud build up on the injector filters.
