Lol, why all the hate? I'm interested in doing this myself. Yeah, you can buy something from ebay, I get it. But some of us like to build things ourselves. It's not your place to tell anyone what is and isn't worth their time and effort. That's how people learn to create things. There's a sense of pride that comes with hacking hardware to make it do things it wasn't intended for. Some weirdo did this before those docking stations and cables were available. I personally don't want to spend $30-$50 if I can make something from spare parts.
Sata connector at the most of the laptop computers provide 5V power only. You doesn't need to yellow and one of the Black wires. Yellow wire carrys 12v but laptop doesn't provide it.
The concept is great but the presentation sucks, firstly, you sped up the video,secondly you need a microscope, so that the viewer can see what you are doing.
This is a extraordinary and very challenging idea to put together, though the easier method to do this is to use a sata extension cable that can be purchased on ebay or where ever that sells these sata extension cables.
Maybe this is OK if you don't value your time. But for $30 dollars you can get a stand alone usb docking station for sata 3.5 and 2.5 inch drives... built in power supply. I bought the Thermaltake BlacX 2.5"/3.5" sata hard drive usb docking station from Amazon. Hot swap without the Frankenstein monster look. The time you'll save will more than offset $30.
for even less you can just but a sata extension cable just like this except manufactured and less costly because you don't have as much wasted products, if you have a spare broken hard disk its not a waste, but solder etc and time spent is. this is something readily sold on amazon but honestly.... props to him for doing it himself.

LMAO!! I give you props man for hanging in there!! Use some paste or flux same thing your solder will hold like a champ and a brush of it also on desoldering helps it come right out. Still funny as shit though man I could tell you were getting fet-up but all good :) And "F" anyone that says you can go but it here or there !!! The web is full of people that have to say go buy it. Cause if your like me if rather figure shit out on my own and build it myself, it's knowledge and you can't get that shit sitting in front of a tv everybody after work watching the same stupid shit !! You could've slowed it down once in awhile When you were pissed so we all could here some cussing!! Lol
