Scriptures stutter to speak of it. Gods wring their hands as they fail to grasp it. How to speak of the invisible and unseen? And yet the 15th-century poet Kabir speaks of it - as the mystery of the little seed, in which are contained the shoot, branches, leaves, fruits, the whole tree, and its shade! That’s how the unseen resides in all of us, says Kabir.
In Kabir’s dictum, the Teacher or ‘Guru’ has been accorded the prime position. The teacher according to him was the incarnation of God. It was the guidance of a teacher that led man in the proper direction and helps him in developing the right insight.
The presence of Guru was similar to a ray of light or a cloud full of wisdom. What wisdom this body can behold was preached by the Guru. Mind, intellect, and even speech cannot equate to the guidance of a Teacher. Scriptures stutter to speak of it. But the Master is capable of permeating everything.
Kabira says that in the seed is shoot, tree, branch, root, leaf, flower, fruit, and shade, oh seeker! It's the powerhouse of many wonders. Similarly, the self contains the Supreme Being, divinity, and all creation, which is nurtured by the wisdom and proper training under a Teacher.
Chants, postures, fasts, and prayers are all a facade! Kabir's Guru freed him of this muddle. The gracious Guru gave his blessings and showed Kabir his true self and directed him to the actual path to attain liberation and Godhood.
Listen to this mesmerizing composition in the vocals of Brothers Shivji and Badri Suthar who graced Rajasthan Kabir Yatra organized around Bikaner in 2012, singing this song on the 3rd night's halt in Jamsar village. From Bikaner themselves, the ‘vaani parampara’ (oral tradition of mystic poetry) of this region has been in their family for four generations. Shivji and Badri learnt from their father, Amarji Suthar. Shivji started performing at the age of 15 and has been singing for the last 45 years. Locally, he is lovingly known as ‘Kalakar Ji'

The indivisible permeates everything
He sang of it as ‘Not this, not this’
The heart-guru made the unknown known
Shiva, Sankadik, Brahma wring their hands
As Hari eludes their grasp, oh seeker
Vashisht and Vyas couldn’t reason it out
No one plumbed its depths, oh brother
The true guru made the unseen visible
Like oil in seed, like fire in wood
Like ghee hidden in milk, oh seeker
Meaning in word, matter in material
Like melody in the note, oh brother
The guru brought to light the invisible
In the seed is shoot, tree, branch and root
Leaf, flower, fruit and shade, oh seeker
So the self contains the Supreme
Being, divinity and all creation, brother
The true guru made the unseen visible
Chants, postures, fasts and prayers
He freed me of this muddle, oh seeker
Kabir says, the gracious one gave grace
He showed me my true self, oh brother
The heart-guru made the unknown known

Rajasthan Kabir Yatra is a 7 days-long annual travelling folk music festival spread across six rural and urban locations in and around Rajasthan. Organised by Lokayan, Bikaner and partnered with Rajasthan Police, this is a folk festival providing a space where folk musicians, artists, scholars, students and seekers can immerse themselves in the voices of Bhakti and Sufi saint-poets such as Kabir, Mira, Bulleh Shah, and many more, questioning and dissolving boundaries of caste, class, religion and identity.
The five editions, in 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 were widely chronicled and appreciated. It brought together 50 artists, over 400 Yatris every year from other parts of India, and thousands of local audiences.
