Satie - Gymnopédie No. 1 

Hello everyone, this video is dedicated to my Patron Mike Barnett who has been doing some amazing things with my MIDIs. He's been supporting me since the beginning, so I want to thank him and all of you for your ever-growing support! This piece evokes the feelings of being in a dream, like floating amongst clouds in ultimate tranquility, I hope it brightens your day.

This is either: A. The most relaxing piece ever B. The most depressing piece ever

This is one of those classical pieces you can recognise but never know the name of, until now...

This piece is considered by many to be Satie's most prominent work. But while, as you can see, a lot of people in the comments reminisce about old times, express emotions of sadness or happiness, feel calm and tranquil from the simplistic beauty of Gymnopédie, he never intended it to be interpreted in any of these ways. Satie produced this piece as "Furniture music", sort of like musical white noise in the background of other activities. For example, as ambiance for a fancy restaurant. He never knew that it would become so impactful in the world of music, as he died in 1925 and his legacy started to rise in the 1960s. It's amazing how even in a minimalist throwaway piece, he was able to, accidentally or not, capture such a wide range of experiences and moods, still listened to by millions around the world in modern times.

This was the song that always put me to sleep when I was a baby. This song is one of my earliest memories. Playing it in front of my family today felt a little surreal, like the past was repeating itself. It was one of the very few times i've seen my dad cry. I wish I could thank Erik Satie a thousand times for this beautiful piece that inspired my love for piano.

My 12 year old son just learned this and played it for his mom's birthday two days ago as her gift. Needless to say, she wept a bit :) Its now one of my favorites to listen to. And I cant help but shed a tear a little bit when I see my son playing it. Its make him that much more beautiful of a person.

Nobody is using the right word to describe this song. It’s not sad or depressing it’s a nostalgic melancholy

After deciding to learn playing piano being 50 years old this is the first piece of music i learned to play i would call a real piece, not only exercice. It was so satisfying to hear me play it, even if i am not perfect at it. Before that i almost was about to forget about my plans to learn piano, cause my exercice pieces bored me on one hand or where overdemanding on the other. What a lovely song.

I love this piece of Satie. It feels like someone I love is dying in few minutes and we're making the best out of the remaining moments.

For 4 minutes and 5 seconds, everything in my life was...perfect.

Once long ago when I was a young teen. I played this song on loop during a snowy night with no light or ambience besides the fireplace. I was drinking a vanilla cream soda and doing a puzzle, it was the best time ever.

I find it amazing how the 'chorus' (for lack of a better word) makes you feel differently when it is repeated for the second time than when it is played for the first time...

They played this at my best friends funeral. She was 15 at the time and absolutely adored this piece. Always played it and nearly perfected it through practice. I really love it too but for lack of better words it was ruined by her death. I can't listen to it and not think of that person and it really hurts. So it kinda sits there. And sometimes when I wanna feel that extra bit closer, I'll have it play in my room and just run over the memories through my mind. You were taken far too soon, Samantha. I'm a grown ass man now but not a day goes by. Rest in Peace, get ready to play this again when I see you in the beyond. 🕊️

this feels like when you’re remembering a good memory, from when times were happy and carefree. That nostalgic melancholy that spreads through your chest and makes you tear up knowing you can never go back to those memories.

Why does everybody associate this song with sadness? I think it's actually a very calm and peaceful song.

This makes me tear up, that's how nostalgic it is. When I was around 7, I had a little owl toy that would play music until morning, with his face glowing yellow. At morning his face would glow green and say "hoo-hoo! it's ok to wake up!" This was one of those songs that would play. It was always hard for me to sleep, having ADHD. I would hear this one play a lot while I was bored. This song in particular however, would be the one that would ever put me to sleep. I finally found it. I am so happy.

It's one of those songs that makes you sad remembering something that happened in the past and happy at the same time because it happened.

This makes me want to go to a forest and just have a lovely picnic in the sun with my family or friends. It's a peaceful sunny feeling that hits you with slight nostalgia like finally after some hard days you have come to the day where you can rest and relax

My teacher used to play this to make us go to sleep, she has had I believe one or so children and she had made me the person I am today, I am almost rich, I have never been truly truly depressed, because of such a kind person, she was so nice. I don't understand why people would dislike such beautiful masterpiece.

The fact that this masterpiece gets confused/compared to Minecraft just goes to show how both are able to successfully evoke nostalgic happiness vibes in our emotions and we should appreciate the composers of both classical and video game genres

Yes, i have a depression. There, i said it! I think i'm not worth, i'm struggling with my work and i try to be perfect and try to avoid all mistakes at work. When i make one, it makes me sick. this feels like you're walking in a silent alley in comfortably cold night, stars and moon peeking through the clouds while houses are filled with lights.

This will probably get lost somewhere and nobody will read it, but to the people that see this. Ever had a feeling you can’t describe? An empty thought that can’t be imagined, a blurry vision that can’t be seen, a memory that you feel but don’t remember. When you feel something tugging at your heart, but you can’t understand what or why. A calmness falls over you, along with sorrow and sadness. A bit of eeriness, loneliness. Joy, happiness. This song can be heard in the past present and future. Something so little yet significant. When I first heard this song, this is what I felt and it reminded me of a lot of things. Recently these recent years, I’ve become more and more self conscious. Sometimes, instead of doing my work, I sit and think about what my life will become. That my parents will eventually be dead, and so would I. And I wonder, what is the purpose. As I continue to grow, I might eventually find it, but that is something that might not even happen. Everyday, I dread of waking up stressed, and going to school, or whatever. The night is the only time I feel peaceful, sometimes I have deep thoughts like this, other times my mind is empty. And right now, I’m still wondering about the purpose. Perhaps there is no purpose. Perhaps the purpose is to find it. Perhaps it is to just live and be happy. But all of this is worthless against the simple question, “why”. Sure I can be happy, but “why”, am I not going to die anyway. This is what makes life so beautiful, scary, and meaningless to some. Because life’s purpose is something that you have to figure out. And it will be different for everyone, a path that leads to a crossroad of infinite choices. Every star in the sky represents one of us, some will grow brighter and hotter, some become dim, but in the end we will all vanish into nothingness. But the greatest difference between us and the star is that we can achieve something meaningful, something that will make people remember us for. By helping an old lady cross the road, she might tell her kids and grandkids and they will remember you. Or by making a donation, building schools, or even just saying a simple have a nice day. People will remember you. This message that I’m writing has many contradictions to what I’m saying, just like the feelings this song makes you feel. Anger for not doing something worthwhile, sadness for all the happy times that has past, happiness for the fact that we had even been happy, and that we will continue to live and explore life. My final message to you is to keep on growing, keep on exploring, keep on inventing, keep on thinking, keep on working because the moment you stop, is when you are forever lost, forgotten, and dead. Keep on going, and never stop.

Even though many disagree with me, I find this song to be really sad. Not sad in a dramatic way, just sad in the way that you…miss something. Whenever I listen to this song, I feel sad because I want to go back to a specific time, a specific memory, where I felt good. I don't think this song is completely sad, It's more melancholic, relaxing and happy. Like feeling better after a deppressive episode. Sure, you still may not like yourself and your anxiety isn't may not be gone but you can take this moment to relax and feel happy again for a while.

I never realized this song was used in popular media that people confuse for being the original like Minecraft or Haruhi. I've always known this song as a child because of choir, my teacher loved to play random songs before the bell rang. Gymnopedie and Clair de Lune are my favorite. I've always romanticized piano ever since I was 14 it always made my heart swell. It's so beautiful! A horrible experience almost ruined Gymnopedie for me, but I don't want to let that win, because I've always loved the song even before things happened. Listening to you play now, I try to forget the present memory that hurts me, and try to recall my younger days instead. ^^

When I was 5, I heard this song on roblox, a sonic rp game to be exact, but I could never find it, 9 years later I finally found it via another RU-vidr, and this brings a tear to my eye, as I recall all my childhood memories, (as I know, the game was deleted) thank you, and to you, reading this comment, you might have something you lost, like a memory, a belonging, or a person, but never let go of that determination to get it back, and I hope you have a wonderful year. I'm trying to sleep now. Today, my dog was diagnosed with bone cancer. I am 18 years old and he is 15 years old and needs to amputate his paw and undergo chemotherapy. But at that age he can't take it ... So he'll probably be sacrificed. I'm crying so much ... He was always my company. And now you're going to move on to another plane. This song calms me down a little and helps me in this sad moment. I hope you don't go through the same pain that I feel now. Animals are angels and should not suffer. Edit: today (04/19/2021) my dog gone by natural death. he had cardiopulmonary arrest. Thank you very much for your support. It was very painful, but he was a warrior. He fought anemia, widespread infection and tick disease and managed to survive ... However, unfortunately, he was unable to resist cancer and its consequences.

This song reminds me of my piano teacher who we lost earlier this year. Her name was Moly Costello she was 88 and died of a brain tumour. She will forever be in my heart and all her pupils.🖤💙❤️

Ok but imagine this. A young Russian soldier, after having lost all his friends and family in the war, walks alone in the snow. His bones are colder than the empty roads outside and he looks at all the bright windows and hears the sound of sweet lullabies coming from them and yearns for a place or a person he also could call home, where he could curl up in warmth and cry. Cry for all the things he wasn't ever given, for all the things he lost. In fact all he needed was to feel even one second of warmth, but even that wasn't given.
