My grandmother loved Lawrence Welk and the Hollywood Palace. The variety shows could showcase the best talent of the time. That was real entertainment. Thanx Fred for once again sparking my memory to a much better time on TV.
Some say that the cancellation of "The Hollywood Palace" marked the beginning of the end of "The Lawrence Welk Show" and the other variety series all of which went off the air in the '70s.
@@vividwatch47 I believe you're right. The start of the liberal agenda in Hollywood finds its roots back then as wholesome entertainment was cancelled to make way for what we see today.
@@vividwatch47 The Lawrence Welk Show stayed on until 1982. I watched it religiously from the time I was about seven with my grandma and then after she passed away in 1971 when I barely turned eight I still watched it. I still love it on PBS and My favorite singers are The Lennon Sisters I am 55 and Diane Lennon, or Dee Dee as she's known is my favorite one. She is five days older than my late father. She was born December 1st 1939 and he was born December 6th.
One remarkable thing is how a lot of 1968 households still had only one TV set and thus only one chance to see these programs first-run. After that was something called "rerun" season a few months later when you might get a second chance. Your next shot would be if the show reached a 5-year run and went into syndication. Thus many now-classic TV shows didn't get a popular following until 7-8 years after they first appeared. Also a reason why a lot of shows that only ran for a few episodes in the 1960s are such rare finds.
I am an old soul. According to my mom, so I still love Lawrence Welk to this day the reason I do is because my grandparents watvhed it and I would watch it with them. Then after it went to independent I watched it every Saturday night now I watch it on PBS. Plus I ADORE My Three Sons.
Despite Hope Lange winning an Emmy The Ghost & Mrs Muir was cancelled at seasons end. The following season it aired on ABC Ms Lange won another Emmy and the show was canceled again. Mike Connors was nominated a few times for Mannix no wins. Gail Fisher won two Emmys for her role as Peggy. Bea Benederet passed away from cancer ( she appeared in the first three episodes) June Lockhart replaced her as the mother figure it wasnt the same. CBS gave PJ one more season ( for syndication purposes) . In the Fall of 1970 The Mary Tyler Moore Show premiered in that time slot. The Hollywood Palace replaced the ill fated Jerry Lewis Show ( it lasted about 2 months) in Jan of '64. THP lasted 7 seasons. The Landslide episodes of Get Smart were a take off on Ironside ( obviously). GS would move to CBS the following season ( it's last). CBS reached a deal to co- produce the show. Thanks Fred.
I would sometimes watch "The Ghost & Mrs Muir" as a kid in the late 60s but till now did not know that it moved from NBC to ABC ! Fascinating ! I always thought Hope Lange was incredibly beautiful and Edward Mulhare was born to play the stern but kind Capt ! Thanks for your informative comment !!

When I was a kid I remember the Geritol commercials on Lawrence Welk. It was to help "old people" with iron poor blood. Now I'M one of those "old people".
It's all from your perspective....compared to these days, a cakewalk my friend. I was there for those too. Actually, that is the theme song from "All in the family."
The Hollywood Palace clip with Elizabeth Montgomery reminds me of how the Emmy's used to be. I remember one year they had a number performed by characters from commercials. It included "Mother Nature" from the margarine commercial and Mr. Whipple, among others. Back then, TV was about escapism and entertainment instead of political feuding and awareness about every "cause" under the sun. Those were the days.

Wow...that was great living the good old days. If you didn't have anything planned for Saturday night. Then you were going to be glued to the TV set. It was nothing but clean fun, because programs weren't racey or suggestive like the way they are now. Thanks for sharing this with us. Things were very different 50 Yrs ago.
Mine too. Then I loved My Three Sons later on, when Dodie and the triplets were little when Chip met Polly. Then they moved it to another night because it came on at either 10 or 10:30 because my bedtime was at 8:30 weeknights and nine Fridays and Saturdays.
Same thing with my parents - Saturday night was ALWAYS Jackie Gleason and Saturday Night at the Movies.. they were GLUED to the tv set, wouldn't even take phone calls during those shows, unless it was one of my grandparents that needed to urgently talk about something.. but even they knew better than to interrupt Saturday Night at the Movies, if at all possible LOL!
My stepdad was a big fan of Jackie Gleason so most Saturday nights we watched his show (from beautiful Miami Beach !). Gotta admit..Mr Gleason was one VERY funny fellow ! And sometimes we'd watch Saturday Night at the Movies...would depend on the movie, of course.
@@jubalcalif9100 Jackie Gleason was a Saturday night "staple" in our house too. I can still remember a very young Wayne Newton making his singing debut on that show and all his subsequent appearances. "Hollywood Palace" was also a Saturday night favorite. We were so very lucky to have been "kids of the 1960's"! So many memorable moments are ingrained in our minds forever...and most seem like only yesterday.
Holy Underwear, Batman ! I absolutely loved watching this ! I watched a lot of TV as a kid in the 60s and this brought back wonderful memories ! I watched every one of those programs shown in this video ! Well, not every show every week but have seen at least a couple of episodes of all those listed ! Many thanks for sharing with us !! :-)
@@veteranpatriot4474 He's absolutely beautiful! He looks so much like my son's German Shepherd. I have had labs all my life, but when my son became an adult, he fell in love with Shepherds. I have to say I now share that love. I just cannot believe how smart they are! He lost his sweet boy of ten years last summer. I didn't think any of us would survive... I was at his home when the vet came to do the euthenasia, and, well I'm sure I don't have to tell you how we all died a little. One evening in October, he drove to my house and all I could see in the passenger side window were two big ears sticking straight up! Huge ears on this tiny body! Out tumbled the cutest puppy I've ever seen... He actually looks like he has the same coloring as your beautiful boy. Anyway, sorry for rambling, I really just wanted to tell you how handsome he is! Great Post! Only show not listed here was a news documentary show called "ABC Scope" which was cancelled at season's end and replaced by local programming. It aired on Saturday Nights from 10:30-11:00 p.m. after "Hollywood Palace" and lead-in to local News.
Another journey thru the space-time continuum!!! I remember this year so well. Adam-12 was my brother's, father's and my favorite show!! My father was impressed they were giving the Miranda Warning since it was so new at the time. 50 years later, I still watch Adam-12 on COZI!! Somehow, I guess with reruns, I managed to see many of these shows, Adam-12, Ghost & Mrs. Muir, Mannix, Hogan's, and The Great One, Jackie Gleason!! Here in NYC, Gleason's show was a "summer replacement," if my memory is correct. The Honeymooners were brought back "In Color" and I remember the Mooners travelling thru Europe; for some reason, I'm visualizing Ralph and Norton in Lederhosen either in Switzerland or Germany as I type this! As always, your Blasts From The Past are triggering memories of that time, thank you!! Not to be too persnickety, but, the Adam-12 clip shown is from 1972 or 1973 when LAPD used AMC Matador police cars. In 1968, Reed and Malloy were in a 1968 Pymouth Belvidere.
The Jackie Gleason Show was a Saturday night "staple" in our house. It introduced the world to a very young, very talented Wayne Newton, who appeared on the show several times throughout it's run. And the show's recurring character, "Crazy Guggenheim" (which would be deemed so politically and socially incorrect today) was a "hoot" and one of our favorites.
Couldn't give it THUMBS UP fast enough!! Superior in every way to anything else in this genre on RU-vid.. of COURSE, and why? because it's a Fred Flix Production!!

The only shows I really watched from these were in syndication and reruns. ADAM 12 was a summer night rerun favorite of me and one of my brother. MANNIX was a favorite of my father. And the LAWRENCE WELK SHOW, I discovered much later in reruns on PBS (Sunday afternoon?) which I watched with my mom when I visited her. That's when I fell in love with the Lennon Sisters, a few decades too late...
Thank you Fred for another fine memory inducing compilation. I fondly recall all of these shows except I have no recollection of Hollywood Palace. Because I probably never missed an episode of Petticoat Junction airing at the same time. Lori Saunders drew the full attention of my seven year old mind. If I happened to be staying at my Grandparents we would watch Lawrence Welk. My Grandmother loved that show. I remember watching The Jackie Gleason Show, Hogan's Heroes and Mannix with my Dad. Wonderful stuff.
Oh once again! Adam 12 convinced me to be a policeman. 21 years later became one, 25yrs of law enforcement no regrets (1978 thru 2003). Great memories whenever my parents didn't have friends over Mannix was on. Saturday night up till the end of the show. Had to get up early for church 8:00 am service then to breakfast. @@FredFlix the most horiffic call was to a small park around midnight. I found in some of the underbrush 2 males, 1 had been disembowled 2 had a "columbian necktie" it took me about 5 minutes to gather myself. This was around my 14th year on the force. Funniest (I a somewhat perverted way) I a couple in the back seat of a car in a compromised position. The lady was 42 n a young lad of 17. No she wasn't a prostitute but a very good friend of the 17 year old's mother. Outcome of relationship unknown.
I Love watching all your videos no matter what the subject is. Some of these I never got to see cuz I had a real early bedtime during school, had to wait for reruns on cable as a teen! Had forgotten all about The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and some others. Feel Good TV.
We had a beige,plastic chassis, black and white t.v. on a rolling metal frame cart back then. I didn't see color until 1971. 2 older brothers to vote with on which shows to watch. I had at least seen all of those shows,except The Hollywood Palace. My brothers were'nt into Variety shows and we got enough of that on Sundays at my Grandparents house with Ed Sullivan.
My family watched a large screen portable B&W TV on a rolling metal rack too ! I think it was a Sears Silvertone. We too did not get a color TV till the early 70s !
That always puzzled me when I was little.. why in the WORLD would police switch from a car as great as a Plymouth, to those junk heaps AMC Matadors... never understood it.. still don't really.
That's what my older brother had, the satellite with the 318 3 speed on the tree. Always needing tires.. than he got his 1972 chevelle 396 4 speed getting ride in that for driver ed..
don't laugh.. the stuff was great! both my Grandmothers SWORE by it.. of course it was 25% alcohol, but, so what? kept them happy, and that's what mattered!
Remember..it had twice the iron in a pound of calf's liver !! My siblings and I were forced to watch that show as kids on Saturday nights. Wish I had a dollar for every Geritol commercial we sat thru ! And often we'd also watch "The Hollywood Palace" which came on afterwards.
For me, when I was a kid in the 80s all of these shows were on in the afternoon or after school. I liked Petticoat Junction but it always made me laugh that they lived in Cooterville?
An FYI that needs to be mentioned : Bea Benaderet had died after lengthy illness during the 1967-68 season and was replaced by June Lockhart for the remainder of the show's run.

We had a man in my town... One of the first police chiefs and town historians... His son was wheelchair bound, so his van was labeled with a decal that said IRONSIDES. it reminded me when they showed leadside
Fred,I must've done a lot of channel changing back then because I watched all if these.Grandparents watched Welk & HP,parents watched Jackie(me too),everybody watched Hogan,& I watched My Three Sons just for that babe & a half Tina Cole.Also watched Mannix,who was Rockford before Rockford,as he would get beat up,crash his car or get the girl every week.
Check out the Lawrence Welk video's. My Grandmother and elderly aunt's always watched LW. We read comic books while it was on until we got the TV in the evening after the program ended. Oh , but we got cake or cookies and lemonade. It brings back pleasant memories of our families.

It's only in recent years that I learned that so many of the great TV theme songs of the '60s had lyrics...you just never heard them sung. My guess the reason for that was to make you buy the records.
The graphics indicate the promo was from when they were first paired, in the middle of the 1966-67 season (replacing an unsuccessful TV version of the movie SHANE)
And Saturday was the prime time version of those two Barris programs. They also aired five days a week during the day !! Must have kept Chuck pretty busy !!
Geritol was their longest running sponsor I think (from the 50s till when the show was finally cancelled in the early 70s). I myself preferred Milk of Magnesia with a little vodka in it...I called it a PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER !
