Discover the work of Tadao Ando, a world-renown Japanese architect and Pritzker Prize winner, in this virtual edition of Saturday University led by Dr. Jin Baek. Baek will contextualize Ando’s spiritual architecture in the framework of the Japanese tradition of nothingness.
The significance of nothingness in Ando’s work will be explored in The Church of the Light, Ando’s iconic religious structure in Osaka, which features Christian motifs amidst the luminous quality of natural light. This talk will explore how Ando’s spiritual architecture offers visitors a contemplative, cross-cultural space.
Jin Baek is a professor at the Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering at Seoul National University. He acquired a Bachelor of Science from Seoul National University and a Master of Architecture from Yale University. He completed his Ph.D. in the history and theory of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of Nothingness: Tadao Ando’s Christian Sacred Space (Routledge, 2009) and Architecture as the Ethics of Climate (Routledge, 2016).

Exceptional lecture. I especially found the analogy between Japanese lacquer arts and the requirement for darkness to appeciate it and the treatment of the concrete to produce a reflective sheen very interesting. I'm an architectural photographer and interior designer by trade, but I also docent at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth designed by Ando. I'll enjoy using that reference on the tour I'm giving tomorrow. Thank you!
