I absolutely adore the Dreamcast, and I'm really starting to fall in love with the Saturn (I didn't start getting games for it til recently), but at much as I love the DC, I will say that the controller is such a huge step down from the Saturn's, especially for 2D fighters. To this day, I still don't understand Sega's reasoning behind giving their "next gen" machine two less buttons than the previous
@user-yk1cw8im4h

how do you not understand when every single modern consoles and the so called "next gen" ps5 and xbox series x etc have that "two less buttons" design.
@HybridAngelZero
@HybridAngelZero 3 года назад
@@user-yk1cw8im4h I understand why every modern console has the four button diamond layout for the face buttons, I just mean the amount of buttons total on the whole controller xD They really should have given the DC some equivalent to L1 and R1. The Saturn had ABC, XYZ, L and R, but Dreamcast removed C and Z without replacing them with anything. This made some otherwise solid ports (Like Soul Reaver, for example) have some awkward controls

Slight correction: Guilty Gear X didn't run at a higher resolution than most 2D games at that point, it ran at a higher res than all of them: it was the first ever 480p 2D game period. Prior to its release, only the character select screen of Cotton Boomerang had been natively rendered in 480p.

@TheTrueBro 4 года назад
People seem to be confused. Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Capcom vs SNK 2 do run at 640x480, however the only things that are actually displaying at that resolution are the backgrounds and the effects. Unfortunately the sprites are heavily upscaled and that's why you see too much pixelation on them. The same applies to a lot of 2D PC games back in the day (sure you could run them at the highest res of the time, but pixelation will still be there). Guilty Gear X, on the other hand, is a game that features everything rendered for that high resolution. No pixelation at all. So yeah, Guilty Gear X was the first 2D game of its kind (graphics wise). That game by itself saved the 2D games back then from being seen as "obsolete" and more developers kept on in that path (like Examu, Vanilla and etc)
@ItPutsTheLotionOnItsSkin
@ItPutsTheLotionOnItsSkin 4 года назад
Ridiculous comment. Toonstruck (1995) on the PC is 2D and 480p. That's *FIVE YEARS* before Guilty Gear X. Another is Leisure Suit Larry 7 (1996). Both are 2D point and click games, but they wasn't even the first 2D games to use 480p on PC. There's also a Japanese computer called the PC98 that ran many 2D games at _higher_ res than 480p before the DC was even released. By the time Guilty Gear X came out in 2000, 480p was low res by PC standards. I was gaming at 1024x768 on PC then, practically a "HD" resolution, although they were all 3D games because i wasn't in to 2D. Saying GGX is the first ever 480p 2D game is laughable and flat out wrong. So it's not even remotely close to being the first, but it was possibly the first _true_ 480p 2D *fighter* on console where the sprites and backgrounds are all 640x480 (480p), because as The True Bro pointed out above, other 2D fighters did use that res before GGX.

MvC2 is my favorite Dreamcast fighter, despite the presence of Soul Calibur and Powerstone and Project Justice. MvC2 is just the finest 2d fighter of all time. Favorite Saturn fighter is probably Virtual Fighter 2. Such sweet simplicity. I also really liked Fighting Vipers, Last Bronx, and the X-Men and Marvel Capcom fighters, never got to play the vs series on Saturn as I never imported, no ram cart. edit: as the video went on I could tell he was going to go with the Saturn, which is awesome and it is very close and that is a fine choice. But in that early neo-geo section, man I would rather play Last Blade and Mark of the Wolves forever on Dreamcast than any of that Fatal fury or king of Fighters crap on Saturn. Sometimes variety isn't enough, especially with fighting games. I would have gone with Dreamcast.

Saturn SFZ3 wins over the Dreamcast version because of a very important detail: Gameplay wise it retains the feeling of the original CPS2 version. IIRC Saturn version uses the old 2D hit boxes for hit detection, while the Dreamcast uses some sort of polygon technique for this (altering all moves in some degree) and they also did some adjustments to the gameplay on purpose as some sort of "rebalancing", while the Saturn stayed close to the original.

That Heavy Metal Geomancer looks really cool. I missed out a lot on the DC as mine was held hostage by an angry ex.

I love fighting games! I bought these 2 consoles in Japan with lots of fighting games because the Saturn has a lot of exclusives. I really like Fighters Megamix

Dragon Ball Z - Shin Butouden is very underrated, in my humble opinion, and should've gotten a mention. But, amazing vid bro. I got my eye on some of those "oddbalss" now. Thanks for the education! 😎👍

I have had both machines since they came out . You just cannot compare 32 to 128 bit , but they both have a very special place in my heart!

Just as an interesting fact... the Dreamcast can move the Neo·Geo CD very nice (Neo4All CD emulator). Almost all KOF from 94 to 99 works flawless, Kabuki Klash, Samurai Shodown III and IV, Double Dragon, Breakers, Waku Waku 7, Last Blade, Real Bout Special, Real Bout 2... just to mention some of them. Dreamcast is the definitive 2D Fighting machine :-)

... The DC version of Alpha/Zero 3 had Reverse Dramatic Battle too and was also 3 players.

The DC only has a multiplayer variant of the reverse dramatic battle. You cannot play it against the CPU. There must be 3 players and 3 controllers present.

Fantastic video!!! As a fighting game fan it is not suprise that I owned both. I feel you can't go wrong with either system. I know this was only a comparison of games, but I will say the Saturn controller was perfect for fighting games where as the Dreamcast controller was not. It's a small thing but worth mentioning, as one console was ready to go out of the box and the other almost required another accessory.

Saturn handsdown!!! They even released a astro city type 2 player joystick so it felt like an arcade at home. Even the default controller is much better suited to fighting games vs dc and saturn had better 3rd party arcade sticks. most dreamcast 3ds are on the 128bit machines anyway except vf3 which i do love ... Great video

Man, I LITERALLY very recently just showed my co-worker the VAST majority of fighting games on both the Saturn and Dreamcast (and yup, I DO love me my Saturn (and it's Japanese imports)) . But dang, this is QUITE the list I never even knew of... I have obscure titles like Asuka 120%, Astra Superstars, and DXhird, but there are just some titles I've never heard of like Sasaki and Sokko Seitokai!... I NEEEEEED this entire list of fighting games!!!

The Dreamcast did get a version of Bleemcast that played Metal Gear Solid so... that was something. It also got Headhunter, which I rather enjoyed even if I did have to import it.

Amazing video as always Mr Lord X. I play my dreamcast often still, but haven't had a Saturn in a few years. Oh and only a small thing, at about 12 mins in you spelt the game as motal kombat at the bottom. Im not fussed, but in case it bothers you.

It is basically impossible to choose between the two consoles. They both have great fighters. Got great multiplayer sessions memories from Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighters Megamix while I've got amazed with Soul Calibur, Power Stone 2 or Capcom vs SNK.
