You definitely have to check out their "Little Mermaid" Medley. Rachel obviously plays Ariel in that, a role which came very naturally to her since she played Ariel at shows at Sea World for years.

One of the things I love about Voiceplay apart from their incredible vocals etc is how lovely they all are. They love to have fun & none of them seem to be full of themselves. Geoff & Kathy are just so great together & the video about Kathy's hearing loss is brilliant. They did one about their IVF to get their little boy so caring. Most of them have worked at Disney in the past. Pattycake is owned by Layne & Tony (who used to be in VP) where they often film. Wow that got long!!!!

Most of the VoicePlay members (and featured artists) have performed at both Disney and Universal Studios. There is a video on RU-vid of Geoff, Kathy and Tony Wakim in the Beetlejuice show as Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Dracula. Cesar and Deejay Young both played Wolfman (different times) in the same show. And both Cesar and Eli have spent a year at Universal Japan (again, different times) VoicePlay predates the other acapella groups, especially considering they first went by 42Five. You can see videos of them (as 42Five) performing Road Trip on cruise ships. So they’ve always leaned toward the theatrical, even when doing more traditional shows. After they did the Sing Off tours (one year with Home Free, when they became good friends) Layne advocated for doing RU-vid videos in addition to their regular shows. And the makeup and costumes followed.

Great new little facts to add to my obsession. I didn’t know about Toni being Dracula or those young’uns being Wolfman. And Universal Japan. Quite the travelers.

@@janetdw sometimes Eli and Cesar forget on chats and start conversing in Japanese. Tony has said that Dracula was his favorite role. (He certainly knows how to work a cape.). And he reprised the role for a cameo in Pattycake Production’s Bump In The Night.

@@Wildecat10 thank you! I love hearing little tidbits about my favorite group. I’m trying to visualize Eli and Cesar speaking Japanese and I just can’t do it. So, Layne also did an interview with the Charismatic Voice where he talked about how this medley was done. He goes into a lot of technical details. It is really interesting if you are curious about that aspect of a capella music.

Geoff isn't the only VoicePlay member to have worked at Disney, and VoicePlay themselves have worked *with* DIsney. Both performing there, and doing arrangements for them (The Newsies Sessions and the Aladdin Sessions, both 4 song arrangements; there's a video about this way back on their channel), so I'd imagine that gives them a bit of an affinity for Disney. I have to wonder if it doesn't also allow them some leeway from Disney that other artists- especially independent artists, as VoicePlay are- might not be given. At any rate, yes, Rachel has performed with VoicePlay quite a lot, and probably would do so even more if she lived in Florida with them. She has also performed as Ariel, so when you see her in the Little Mermaid Medley don't be surprised when she absolutely nails the role. She meshes with the group really well (although to be fair, it seems that the same can be said about many other artists as well), and it's always a joy when she shows up. A couple of my favorites with her are Kidnap the Sandy Claws from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Attention, originally by Charlie Puth.

Yes! I do love VP, but HF is awesome s well. But country’s not my thing. But I always listen before I decide as it would be a shame to miss a winner due to preconceptions. I love that they seem to truly enjoy what they do and have as much fun as VP. A few of their country-ish times have even landed on my playlist, and I love their classic country numbers. Can’t not love Mr Cash and Ms Cline! And as much as I love VoicePlay, there are some that I’ve listened to and realized “just not my thing”. They did a great job with it. It’s just not something I enjoy. And that’s how I feel about many of the country tunes that HF does. There is absolutely no way you can say these guys aren’t talented. It’s just sometimes comes down to the song. And that’s the way it should be.

I think their move toward Disney comes partly from the market and partly from the fact that really enjoy this! I believe all the core members have worked at Disneyworld or Universal Orlando before joining the group. Geoff did a defunct oggie Boggie stage show for them. the performance side is something they all enjoy and it shows in their work.

Agreed. I can also tell that they all worked for the parks because especially in their "Boy Bands in 5 minutes" you can tell that they have had to learn choreography a lot. Like even to the point that I think I recognized specific moves that I remember seeing in shows at Disney

You're right, these are beautiful people. Long hair? You remember Samson? Guy in the bible, got his hair cut by Delilah? You can see him early videos such as Phantom of the Opera. Geoff, Layne, and ex-member Earl met and sang together at middle school and clearly loved theatre. Most of the group have worked for Disney at some point. Theatre is their thing and what sets them apart from Home Free and PTX. Something Geoff has said is that he and VoicePlay don't do karaoke. If they can bring something new to a song, having listened to every cover they can find, then they don't do it. And that's what they do, make it their own, every time.

To answer your question on what drove them to being voiceplay, first of all voiceplay is actually older than both home free and Pentatonix the group started at 1995 I think where it was just Geoff, Layne and Earl and as they grew older worked in Disneyland in Orlando where the town is very heavy in theater and acting so makes sense why voiceplay was on the more theater side

When I need a laugh, I always come back to your reactions, hope you don't mind! But I really appreciated this one, because you know how great these guys are. Not just musically, but in every way possible. Geoff and Kathy's video about her hearing loss was funny, sweet, educational, and fun - despite the nature of the topic. Voiceplay did the Just Sing fundraiser, the Halo tribute to their good friend who died last year, and they did Don't Stop Believin' with students at an acapella camp. Layne did an interview with Elizabeth / Charismatic Voice a year ago about the creative process in creating the Moana Medley. It's an hour long, so (in your spare time) you might want to catch that! Thanx again for reacting to this. Queen in 5 minutes is amazing!

I'm a patron of both him and Voiceplay, and we get to see them in various webchats every month, and they all are exactly as they portray themselves to be. Passionate about their art, humble and down to earth, they all have a great sense of humor, they are caring and compassionate, they're playful and silly when they want to, but also confident and focused when they need to.

You mentioned how surprised you were that Geoff started out singing tenor, and I agree it’s utterly mind blowing. And while it’s a little different, do you remember Tim’s interview with The Charismatic Voice where he said that when he was younger before his voice dropped, he sang tenor as well? Like I said, I know it’s different because his situation was more of a natural change compared to how you said Geoff started singing tenor and learned to sing low, but I still find the similarities fascinating. All the a cappella basses are each fantastic and each stands out in their own individual ways.

I also love that Geoff and Layne split the arranging of the music nearly 50-50 with the occasional outsider joining in. Whoever has the responsibility for the music also does the staging, camera work, costuming, make up or makeup pro, etc. Eli has taken to the video backgrounds as in My Mother Told Me and incorportating AleXa's video into their's for Enemy last week. He also has taken over lighting. Cesar says his job is getting the coffee. We'll see what else he picks up as he gets more experience. I've been following your VoicePlay reactions, and oh boy, I'm so glad I listened to this whole video. I couldn't agree more with you about the way you feel about VP, and the artists behind it! I love all of them, as artists and as people! Look at Layne's channel, he has some great vids there too, the ones for his youngest daughter's birthdays, they are so sweet!! I call Geoff's wife Queen Kath, I admire her! 💖 Pattycake is co-owned by Layne and Tony Wakim; Tony was part of VP for a few years, was in the sing-off, and also the Road Trip vid you reacted to. Earl was the high tenor, and he left by mid'2020. I still miss him! Rachel has at least 10 collabs with VP. At some point, we (followers) were hoping she'd join the group for good, but that was not in her plans. She still joins them every now and then. I still enjoy Home Free videos, but VoicePlay is my very favorite! I guess I have this thing for the underdog, and I think their material is excellent, and they deserve more recognition!! 💯

Geoff, Layne and Earl all went to school together and performed in the theme parks, including Disney in Florida. Geoff talks a bit about it in the hearing Loss video with Kathy, about them performing. I first hear Rachel Potter on an American X factor audition 2013, she did a stunning country Find Me somebody to Love. Its worth a look. She's done a fair few with Voiceplay now. See The little Mermaid Medley or Wicked, or The Greatest Showman, or Kidnap the Sandy Claws. Voiceplay in another line up were on the same Sing Off series with Home Free when they went out before Home Free won. The year after Pentatonix won. So I guess realtionships were built then. If you see home Free and the Oak Ridge Boys' version of Elvira, Geoff did the arrangement of it for them.

And have started delving into the Unexpected Musicals which I have thoroughly enjoyed even though I don’t usually listen to the artists who sang the originals. Maybe that’s why Michaelificent is my favorite, since even I’ve listened to Michael Jackson! But I also really enjoy Snow Spears, especially when they sing Toxic while she’s handing over the poisoned apple.

There is a Metal version of that song Shiny. If you haven't checked it out yet, you should. Checkout Jonathan Young "Shiny" Metal Cover. He is so awesome, you will have a new guy to fall in love with his voice..... Anyways as always, Take Care & God Bless.

I haven't read the other comments, but you reacted to Wicked Medley and she was in that with Emoni (they were so good with the guys). She's done a few others with VoicePlay as well, like The Little Mermaid Medley, The Phantom of the Opera, etc. She has also done things with other groups (like Voctave, I believe). She has a beautiful voice, but it's light and airy to match the Disney Princess feel, for sure (even though she can belt with the best of them). Her background is also stage productions/theatre.

I believe it was your second reaction. It's between that and Hoist the Colours. I do believe Hoist the Colours was first, but don't quote me.

I’m so glad you watched Geoff and Cathy’s (or is it with a K?) video on her hearing loss. I was going to suggest that to you if you hadn’t. Amazing, aren’t they both?

Looking forward to seeing your Queen in 5 Minutes reaction. Recently saw it for the first time and it's very clever. I love them doing Friends on the Other Side too and Phantom of the Opera. Did you ever watch Geoff doing Monster Mash? His wife is in the video and it's very fun!

Before the actual reaction starts I just have to say: since you mentioned watching some of Geoff’s technique videos and such, and knowing how much you loved Tim’s interview with Elizabeth on The Charismatic Voice I feel obligated to tell you that she has also done an interview with Geoff on her channel that I think you would really enjoy. She’s also interviewed Layne as well as Peter Hollens too. On to the rest of your video now :D Edit: lmfao oops, should have waited a little bit to leave this comment. >_< my bad haha. I’m glad to hear you’ve already watched Geoff’s interview with her lol.

Geoff and Kathy worked for Disney and Universal Studios. I think Eli and Layne also did. At any rate, they sang, did costumes, etc so it was an easy fall for them.

I enjoyed this, being one of the few people never to have seem Moana. I remembered that you were interested in Austin Brown's offer to sing songs that people had written. You might be encouraged/ inspired by an awesome song posted by ResurrecSis, brilliantly arranged by Sebastien Douyon, which I can guarantee will blow you away. It's called Empty House and is a heavy blues/soul/jazz number which seems to show that Austin should definitely go in that direction. The best thing I've heard this year. Check it out even if you don't want to do a reaction (no video). Btw Tim cut his hair and still seems to hit those low notes

While I enjoy the Moana medley, Little Mermaid will always be my favorite. I did not really enjoy the movie Frozen 2 much, but can strongly recommend their medley, if only to see Adriana. This was her first appearance with them. I’ve read that it was a birthday present for her to appear with them, as her father and Geoff are good friends. She was 15, yes one five, at the time. Her voice is astounding especially at the lower registers. Since you mentioned the hearing loss video, you might Check Out Layne Stein‘s channel. I’m sure you know he’s the beat boxer. His stepdaughter has hearing loss and there’s a video showing when she first gets the cochlear implant. It’s really heartwarming. (There’s also a video of when he proposed to him Cyndi and shows just what a goofball he truly is. She said yes but I think I would’ve smacked him upside the head!) I think one of the reasons I really feel connected to them is that they are the kind of people I would love to hang out with. They just seem like they would be so down to earth and just generally fun and truly nice. Not snotty nice like so many people are, but just genuinely interested in everyone and everything. They tend to be theatrical because they live in Orlando. And I believe PattyCake was not formed until after Tony left VoicePlay and J filled the spot.

Yes, I think Wicked was your first VoicePlay. They’re so good!! And seem to be really humble and genuinely nice people! I’ve often heard them praise both Home Free and Pentatonix - they’re not at all competetive or condescending as some of both their and other acapella groups’ fans unfortunately are... I think this one, ”The Little Mermaid”, ”Attention” and ”O Holy Night” are my favourites featuring Rachel.

Hey Saucey - I don't know about others, but am a much bigger VoicePlay fan than I will ever be a PTX fan. I guess I'm a HomeFryer? It's not that I don't appreciate PTX's talent, I just don't really like most of their styles of music. Love this reaction, Nick. Hope you get to the HF Histories soon. Peace Out!
