Breaking Bad follows protagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a chemistry teacher who lives in New Mexico with his wife (Anna Gunn) and teenage son (RJ Mitte) who has cerebral palsy. White is diagnosed with Stage III cancer and given a prognosis of two years left to live. With a new sense of fearlessness based on his medical prognosis, and a desire to secure his family's financial security, White chooses to enter a dangerous world of drugs and crime and ascends to power in the world. The series explores how a fatal diagnosis such as White's releases a typical man from the daily concerns and constraints of normal society and follows his transformation from mild family man to a kingpin of the drug trade.
Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

@EncryptedLiberty
@EncryptedLiberty 25 дней назад
I think orignally this scene was more in keeping with the earlier episodes' tone. The juxtaposition of silliness with the darkness of the criminal underworld. One could imagine a frantic, energetic, slightly exasperated Saul running around hastily grabbing stuff and shoving it in a bag. Finally turning to Jesse to do the part he's good at--telling him what to say and what not to say. Becoming flustered that Jesse is basically shut down, giving him a goofy and well-meaning, but generally inappropriate speech to console him/pep him up. Then giving up when Jesse only returns a baffled expression, making Jesse say the line he's supposed to say, and leaving just as quick as he came. Banks, of course, has a wildly different tone that is more respectful of the gravity of the moment for Jesse. It gives the whole show a different tone, and may have been a major turning point for the show to veer even deeper into drama and away from dark comedy.

Whether Bob Odenkirk was available at the time is not important. Saul was a sort of comic relief in the series to begin with, so he would of course have a "fixer" to handle the rough stuff. Saul wasn't supposed to be the guy to get his hands dirty. Thus, Mike. And we were blessed with the brilliance of Jonathan Banks.

This programme was brilliant for many reasons. One of those reasons is that Mike, like Saul, is a criminal. However, even though he knows he's a criminal, he doesn't wish to lose all of what makes him a human. He empathizes with Jesse. He's doing the job of a criminal, and yet he still tries to maintain his humanity. With a nod to The Godfather, yes it's business, but it's also personal.

The unplanned character development of Mike is incredible. In this show you see how much he has lost his morals and debased himself with how he slaps Jesse. In Better Call Saul, we see how he got to this point. He cared when his little stunt got a normal guy killed when he destroyed Hectors money. He went on a self destructive path. This Mike wouldn't really care as much. In Breaking Bad, he has a code, but not morals. Unless it is family.
@andrasszabo1570
@andrasszabo1570 10 месяцев назад
You're reading too much into it. Mike didn't slap Jesse because "he has lost his morals and debased himself". He did it because Jesse was in emotional shock. But his freedom depended on not being in that shock and not doing anything stupid. That's the way you can wake people up in that situation.
@DaKoRnMaN
@DaKoRnMaN 9 месяцев назад

In all of my years, I have NEVER seen a bong without water in it unless it was being cleaned. Even if it isn't being used daily, there is always water in there. I have a bong that hasn't seen any action in about a month but it still has that same, stale water sitting inside when I last used it. They took the time to make it look like it was used quite a bit.

What didn't make much sense with Mike is why in the world would Gus allow him to freelance on jobs like this, which could easily get him in trouble with the law.
