Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

The first time we see Hank and Saul interact, Saul pulls a fast one and makes Hank look like a fool. This last time (which is canonically the first time lol) we see them together, Saul is *barely* able to manage the DEA into a deal and all under Hank's consent first and foremost. A nice little callback scene to be sure, but I like how it shows that Jimmy didn't just start out capable of manipulating everyone, the DEA included. It took time. He struggles in this prequel scene so that his original scene makes him seem so much more impressive. The writers really didn't miss a step in telling Jimmy's story.

I always thought that Krazy-8 being a DEA informant was just a throwaway line by Hank in BrBa. But the crazy bastards in the Better Call Saul's writing team actually wrote in a compelling story behind all of that. BCS is truly a masterpiece of a prequel in that regard.

I honestly like BCS better than BrBa. I think it is much more tragic, and not too many cringe characters come to mind, unlike Walt's super cringe family. Not to mention, Nacho's arc was just absolutely incredible and very well performed.

Krazy-8 being an informant was instrumental in kicking off the plot of Breaking Bad: 1. Krazy-8 ratted on Jesse and Emilio, forcing Jesse to partner up with Walt 2. @returnoftheredeye
@returnoftheredeye 2 месяца назад
The pacing was one of the biggest differences that stood out for me. In BB, so much happens in even the first episode. By contrast in BCS, we spend what felt like forever watching Jimmy/Saul wrestling with whether to go straight or crooked. BCS asks more patience of the viewer, but the payoff is that you feel way more invested in the characters and their reasons for being in their situation.
@MatthewGross87
@MatthewGross87 2 месяца назад
@@returnoftheredeye And you absolutely need that investment of the characters combined with a deeper understanding of why they are the way they are because so many of them have plot armor. After seeing this scene, we can't forget one thing: The money from Fring's organization is the same that Walter sees on television in the Pilot of Breaking Bad. And that's when Walter conceives the idea of creating an empire. And who allowed Krazy-8 to tell Hank and Steve about the money? Saul And who gave them the location of the house where Jesse was while Walter went with them? Krazy-8. Thanks to whom? Saul It's pretty obvious. I know. But I also know that not everyone put the threads together correctly. I mean, in addition to unconsciously getting Kim to bring out her dark side, by seeing him on TV (1×04, BCS), he also got Walter to do the same in the Pilot.
@khakis69
@khakis69 2 месяца назад
There are actually ~4 years between this moment, and the beginning of breaking bad, so the money Walter saw in the first episode was not from this.
