Finrod sacrificed himself with the understanding that no help was coming and that Sauron would just send in another werewolf to devour Beren. But because of the oath Finrod did what he did to prolong Beren's life for a few more minutes or hours. So in a sense on Finrod's part his sacrifice would do no greater good, it was purely to stay true to the oath he made.

He was amongst the wisest of all of the Exiles and demonstrated a degree of prophecy in his prior gifting the ring and making the promise. He may have foreseen that Beren could indeed survive if he did this last act to preserve him - to survive just long enough to meet Lüthien and escape to the eventual ruin of Sauron and Morgoth both.

Nobody has to agree, but my hopeless romantic brain has become fond of the idea that Finrod and Bëor the Old were actually in love, and this is why Bëor followed Finrod to be with him in Nargothrond for the rest of his life…and thus Finrod swore his oath to Barahir and later saved Beren not just out of personal friendship and gratitude (though that was, of course, a big part of it), but also out of enduring love for their long-dead ancestor.

16:26 I like how Tolkien mentioned a bit more detailed version of Sauron's thought: "The werewolves howled, and Huan hidden lay and growled watchful listening in the dark, waiting for battle cruel and stark. Thû heard that voice, and sudden stood wrapped in his cloak and sable hood in his high tower. He listened long, and smiled, and knew that elvish song. 'A! little Lúthien! What brought the foolish fly to web unsought? Morgoth! a great and rich reward to me thou wilt owe when to thy hoard this jewel is added.' Down he went, and forth his messengers he sent." (J.R.R Tolkien, The Lay of Leithian, p123-125)

Here’s a passage from Of Beren and Lúthien - The Silmarillion that always gives me chills when I read it “Therefore he (Sauron) took upon himself the form of a werewolf, and made himself the mightiest that had yet walked the world; and he came forth to win the passage of the bridge. So great was the horror of his approach that Huan lept aside. Then Sauron sprang upon Lúthien; and she swooned before the menace of the fell spirit in his eyes and the foul vapour of his breath. But even as he came, falling she cast a fold of her dark cloak before his eyes; and he stumbled, for a fleeting drowsiness came upon him. Then Huan sprang. There befell the battle of Huan and Wolf-Sauron, and the howls and baying echoed in the hills, and the watchers on the walls of Ered Wethrin across the alley heard it afar and were dismayed.”

I love Luthien's style of power. She feels like a great river. She comes up to Sauron's tower and sings a song powerful enough to bypass any of his machinations or defences, basically announcing herself to him at the same time. Then after her OP bodyguard has taken out Sauron's elite forces and Sauron comes out she is undaunted by him and with Huan's help cows him completely and then just kinda takes control of his tower and frees everyone. Like, my god she feels like an unstoppable force in this moment haha.

You’d think based on the other tales of Middle Earth there would be some level of cunning or bargaining or infiltration and sabotage, but no, a straight up siege on an island castle from one princess and a dog (but like, a really good boy). This is Sauron we’re talking about, he’s a little twerp.

Beren and Luthien could have run off and married without fulfilling the oath to Luthiens father, but they do anyway. Obviously because they take their oaths seriously, but also because they've personally experienced and seen the destruction of Morgoth and wish to challenge him, AND because their oath is one of love like Finrod Felegund's. It's such an empowering story!

@@OrovingwenA great quality of Beren’s, I think. Unlike many toxic “heroes” who are always like “leave everyone you love behind and run away with me,” Beren doesn’t want to force Lúthien to cut ties with her family, and wants to get on her parents’ good side. That’s actually very boyfriend material of him.

Indeed Sauron seem to have stayed hidden for the rest of the first age, probably because he feared Morgoth's wrath. In the end that is probably the reason he wasn't immediately captured or destroyed in the War of Wrath. Also during his absence Glaurung seems to have taken his place as Morgoth's lieutenant. Edit: Finrod is my favorite character from the Silmarillion and my favorite elf character ever. Such a good guy.

Though not named or even so to speak, categorized by Tolkien, I believe there was a group of Spirits that though less powerful than the Maiar were still of the same ilk and of a level of being more than even Elves. The Valar and I suppose a few Maiar, such as Sauron, had the ability to infuse these Spirits in desired forms, whereas the Maiar were able to select a form on their own. Of these lesser Spirits, I would suggest we could include; - Carcaroth - Draugluin (and the other werewolves) - Glaurung (and probably other dragons) - Huan - Shelob (and possibly, some other spiders) - Thorondor (and probably Gwaihir) - Thuringwethil (though I don't think the bats at Erebor were, but perhaps some?) - Watcher In The Water [and the "Nameless Things" beneath Khazad-Dum] ( though that could be a leap), - no doubt others I'm forgetting The consideration that Draugluin was named the "Father" of werewolves, may not necessarily be taken literally, as we are told Sauron bound these spirits into wolf forms. It may only mean he was "the first". Same with Glaurung. Though considered the "Father" of dragons, I don't think it specifically means he physically sired them, simply that he was again, "the first". Also, no mention of "mothers" at all and I think even in Arda, it takes two to tango. Just some thoughts to chew on, from one who dearly loves ALL of Tolkien's works. :) p.s. absolutely agree with your assessment of Sauron's perspective regarding Morgoth, after this defeat!

Thanks Rainbow Dave! I just watched your Werewolves and Vampires video. I would agree that werewolves and wargs are kin. In fact I would put less emphasis on them being different than you do. In The Ring Goes South, when the fellowship fight (what are presumed to be wargs) in the battle of Hollin, Gandalf speaks this command: `Naur an edraith ammen! Naur dan i ngaurhoth!‘ Sounds familiar: 'Naur dan i ngaurhoth' means 'Fire against the werewolf-host'. Gandalf is using the Sindarin word for werewolf, not for wolf (draug). Perhaps then the only difference with wargs is they have lost some potency over the generations. Or among the wargs remain some greater captains that are still powerful werewolves - think of the 'great wolf chieftains' the likes of Aragorn slay in that battle. When Gandalf says "wargs and werewolves" I think this is not necessarily about making a clear distinction between them, but about presenting the spectrum of names and power of their enemies.
@tolkienuntangled
@tolkienuntangled 2 года назад
The more I've thought about it, the more I'm inclined to agree. The fact that wargs have their own language in the Hobbit (although talking animals should probably be taken with a pinch of salt when it comes to the Hobbit) makes them seem very different to regular wolves. And when the fellowship fight the wargs on Caradhras, their bodies disappear in the morning. They're definitely more than just animals.

Imagine if Sauron had learned some magic from Morgoth that enabled him to capture the Fëa from slain elves before they could fly to the Halls of Mandos to be reincarnated. Would the elves have any way of knowing this was to be their fate? Would the ones who sailed West show up in Valinor like "Where is everybody?" And Mandos just shrugs like "As far as I know, no elf has died in like six thousand years."

No Luthien doesn’t wield a sword, she doesn’t lead an army, she doesn’t do amazing karate or whatever. Too often people mistake those things for power or strength. Luthien and most of the women in Tolkien’s writings wield real power which is wisdom and unwavering courage.

24:49 Sauron was still under Morgoth's service. He went to Taur-nu-fuin to establish a new throne and a darker stronghold: "...A vampire shape with pinions vast screeching leaped from the ground, and passed, its dark blood dripping on the trees; and Huan neath him lifeless sees a wolvish corpse-Sauron had flown to Taur-na-Fuin, *a new throne and darker stronghold there to build."* (J.R.R Tolkien, The Lay of Leithian, p128-129) And as far as we know from the conversation between Luthien and Morgoth, that Sauron were sending messengers from Taur-nu-fuin to Angband. Even that's why Morgoth noticed that Luthien was not Sauron's messenger because he(Sauron) already sent one recently: "Tinúviel spake, a shrill, thin, sound piercing those silences profound: *'A lawful errand here me brought; from Sauron's mansions have I sought, from Taur-na-Fuin's shade* I fare to stand before thy mighty chair!' ... [Morgoth:] "Thy name, thou shrieking waif, thy name! *Tidings enough from Sauron came but short while since. What would he now?* Why send such messenger as thou?" ... [Luthien:] "Thuringwethil I am, who cast a shadow o'er the face aghast of the sallow moon in the doomed land of shivering Beleriand." ... [Morgoth:] 'Liar art thou, who shalt not weave deceit before mine eyes. Now leave thy form and raiment false, and stand revealed, delivered to my hand!' "There came a slow and shuddering change: the batlike raiment dark and strange was loosed, and slowly shrank and fell quivering. She stood revealed in hell." 20:16 At this point, Luthien literally lost her mind and sh*t herself: "More huge were its limbs, its jaws more wide, its fangs more gleaming-sharp, and dyed with venom, torment, and with death. The deadly vapor of its breath swept on before it. Swooning dies the song of Lúthien, *and her eyes are dimmed and darkened with a fear,* cold and poisonous and drear. Thus came Sauron, as wolf more great than e'er was seen from Angband's gate to the burning south, than ever lurked in mortal lands or murder worked." (J.R.R Tolkien, The Lay of Leithian, p125)

Though of course the Hobbit was written by Bilbo, so it's possible that he was relying on hobbit myths about vampires which were only loosely based on "real" Middle Earth vampires.

Glad to have found this and a fascinating [and great] description of one of the best parts of Tolkien's entire universe. Finrod is my favourite of all the elves in the history of Middle Earth because of his character. I would have to question a couple of points however. a) You mention Sauron and Melian as the only Maia mentioned in the 1st Age in ME but aren't all the Balrogs Maia who were corrupted by Melkor, largely having been previous servants of Aule? [Or did you mean named - its late here so may have missed it - but in that case wasn't Gothmog named as the Lord of Balrogs?] b) Finrod didn't take part in the 1st kinslaying at Alqualonde, the havens of the Teleri. It was Fingon, leading the vanguard of Fingolfin's host who came to Feanor's aid when the latter's attack on the Teleri. At least according to my copy of the Silmarillion. Finrod and most of the Noldor could be faulted for not being so disgusted at Feanor's actions that they didn't reject him totally as some did under his father Finarfin but he didn't take part in the kinslaying itself. Anyway many thanks for the great story-telling. I fear I will be back again to read more despite not having the time. ;)

It is rather interesting to say that the actual mythology of the werewolf is actually closer to what Tolkien wrote than it is to what people commonly know about them. The whole man transforming into a man-wolf hybrid at the light of the full moon is believe it or not, a Hollywood creation. Specifically, Universal Studios in the 1920s and the movie The Wolf Man. The mythology did not have people turn into man-wolf hybrids. Most cases, werewolves were either spirits, or have some relation to the fey, or even dreamers who would appear as a wolf while they dreamed.

The Nazgûl fell beast could possibly be the decedents of thuringwethil the fell bat? Perhaps They were still young during the battle of 5 maybe and are mature during the fellowship? What’s your take on this?
@tolkienuntangled
@tolkienuntangled 2 года назад
That's a good theory. I imagine the fell beasts as being more bird like than bat like, but we're told very little about them, so it's certainly not impossible that they could be descendents of Thuringwethil.

So when "il" is at the end of Thuringwethil it is a feminine name but not so for the "il" at the end of Edrahil? I really loved the line "back to the light of out of the pits of despair" and I think we see that sort of connection between later characters in Tolkien's world.
@tolkienuntangled
@tolkienuntangled 2 года назад
This is a really good question. Typically -il does make a word feminine, although there are a few exceptions. Due to complicated reasons, when -il is added to the end of a word, the vowel before the 'i' is 'slid higher and fronter' to another vowel sound (almost always e). So by adding -il to the end of gwath (shadow) it becomes gwethil. I guess Tolkien didn't want to just make Sindarin too similar to English, so he added a few grammar rules that are completely absent in our language. Similar things can be found in Welsh though (apparently). As for Edrahil, he's one of the few Elves whose name we're never given an etymology for, but interestingly, in earlier drafts, his name was Enedrion. And that -on suffix is the masculine equivalent of the feminine -il. That's probably more information than you wanted, but I find it interesting that Edrahil's character went from having a masculine suffix at the end of his name to a feminine one in later writings.

@jayt9608

@@Doe808eoD, Some times there are odd quirks in language that change the word that would normally be feminine to masculine and vice versa. In Spanish -a denotes femininity while -o denotes masculinity, and both el and la also aid in the understanding of the gender (el niño/la niña) but there are exceptions when -o or -a are not denoting the normal designations. It could be that the name here might meet the same rules. An alternative might also be that this elf was given a feminine name by his parents, as we see happen in other instances such as Courtney and Ashley moving from masculine names to feminine in English; or Aholibamah in Genesis 36 being used for both a man and a woman, Noah in Genesis and a lady named Noah in Numbers and Joshua. Just a couple of other thoughts.

What's interesting with the werewolves is the same question with glaurung, it seems most convenient to view them as creations of morgoth and/or sauron in the werewolves case. With belrogs and the vampire, just like with the wizards and sauron himself you can see why miare would take those forms. But morgoth and sauron certainly have a paternal connection with the dragons and werewolves. So I wonder were these natural creatures created by the singing of the gods
