+ TrazorMC Yes sir, My favorite work of all of Tolkien`s incredible and vast creative wonders. The Silmarillion was like my Bible as a younger man, teenager really. This guys Vids are great,but he mispronounces so many names and places ,it makes me cringe. He has obviously not read the notes and all the rest of the appendices of "The Lord....." and The Silmarillion. I would have liked to have had more of Tolkien`s recorded interview`s around for us to hear today. Sadly we have very little of him reading from his own pages. What we DO have,to me, is a thrill to hear! Especially the excitement in his voice as he reads Elvish tongues.

I’ve always had this little theory that one of the main “unspoken” reasons he created the ring is so that no matter how many times his physical body was defeated he could always come back because of the ring, and so used the ring as a way to permanently avoid being sent to the void.
@samdoe3608
@samdoe3608 3 года назад
"He had believed no one had the will to destroy it (the ring), but he was wrong." Was he though? The only reason it was destroyed was Gollum. He wasn't wrong. Probably no one could destroy it, either not physically able or the ring overcomes their will to do that. What brought him down was his own corruption. He warped Smeagol into Gollum, and that backfired
@VonArmagedda
@VonArmagedda 2 года назад
Well, it wasn't even Gollum who destroyed the ring, it has been confirmed that his fall was caused by Iluvatars intervention
@samdoe3608
@samdoe3608 2 года назад
@@VonArmagedda HuhI hadn't heard that. I think it makes more sense that while no one had the will to destroy the ring, raw greed and corruption is innately self-destructive and so in a way Sauron and the ring were their own undoing because of what they made Smeagol become.

Actually Sauron was correct. No-one had the strength of will to destroy the One Ring. Not even Frodo Baggins. The One Ring was destroyed by accident when Gollum took it from Frodo, and then fell into the Crack of Doom while struggling to fight off Frodo’s attempt to take it back. Speaking of the Ring, I’m not at all sure that Sauron took it with him to Numenor. That would be too risky. I thought he hid it in Mordor before surrendering to Ar-Pharazon. So the disembodied spirit of Sauron would not have needed to carry the Ring out of the wreck of Numenor.
@Noname-ql4wr
@Noname-ql4wr 5 лет назад
In the books, Frodo wasn't even fighting to get it back, Gollum just tripped during his victory dance and fell into Mt. Doom. That said, it wasn't just luck. Tolkien, in a letter, alluded to the fact that Eru (God) intervened around this time and caused the ring to be destroyed in some way.

You left out a detail: after Melkor was defeated, Sauron's corruption faded. He went to Elrond to make amends, but Elrond harshly turned him away. Sauron, in this rejection, sank into a dark depression. That depression made it easy for the darkness Melkor had planted within Sauron's soul to overtake him for good. And that's when he fled to Mordor, fearing the judgement of the Valar. And Melkor was chained in the lands to the west, where the elves sail to. So all in all, it was Elrond's fault that Sauron became Sauron and forged the rings. Though no one can blame him for not trusting Sauron.

I don't think you go into enough detail about how Sauron became corrupted towards evil. You just say "after his corruption" at 1:35 ... so I will say a few things. Miron loved order and co-ordination so much that he switched his allegiance to Melkor because Melkor wanted to control everything and used Miron's desires towards fulfilling his own purposes. This was the beginning of Miron's slide towards evil. Echoes of this kind of thing are found in a few religious texts.

Personally I think he peeked in power multiple times, but in different ways. -When he could shapeshift into numerous forms such as the werewolf, and vampires. - Than again in 2nd age with his works of magic, and commanding presense. - than a third time when he forged the 1 ring and it granted him great physical, and even greater command over the wills of others. The really scary thing is that he only ever had these as separate abilities at their peaks. Meaning he was essentially reinventing himself and his power. Now imagine what would have happened if he managed to build his power to the point of reacquiring all of his abilities, and powers. He would be nigh unstoppable.

So at the Mount doom he attacked Frodo while he wore the one ring as it depicted in the movies. @riakm921
@riakm921 6 лет назад
Interestingly, we know that it is prophesied that Morgoth and Sauron will return for a final war/battle known as Dagor Dagorath (as will many other great servants of Morgoth). We do not, however know the details. We know that at the end of the third age, Morgoth is still trapped and unable to come back through the Door of Night. While Sauron is an impotent spirit of malice stuck in Middle-Earth (note the video was incorrect in saying that Sauron left Middle-Earth upon his destruction). So the biggest mystery is how Morgoth is able to find a way back through the Door of Night, and how he is able to regain much of his power. But once Morgoth is able to do these things, then we know that Morgoth will recreate his great servants.

I absolutely agree! As for The Hobbit, there is a really good four and a half hour edit of the movie trilogy that cuts out most of the crap, and follows the book quite well. Riakm Among those of his servants that have names the greatest was that spirit whom the Eldar called Sauron, or Gorthaur the Cruel. In his beginning he was of the Maiar of Aulë, and he remained mighty in the lore of that people. In all the deeds of Melkor the Morgoth upon Arda, in his vast works and in the deceits of his cunning, Sauron had a part, and was only less evil than his master in that for long he served another and not himself. But in after years he rose like a shadow of Morgoth and a ghost of his malice, and walked behind him on the same ruinous path down into the Void. The Silmarillion, Valaquenta

I profoundly dislike the form in the opening sequence. It is more befitting Morgoth and reduces the defeat of Sauron to a lucky strike rather than the joint struggle of the leaders of the free people.
@ErraticFaith
@ErraticFaith 6 лет назад
His physical form represents his true self, who he was created to be. The eye idea is a diminishing effect to make it more realistic for viewing. Otherwise he'd just be on the battlefield back to back with the witchking. Which is more than any of his opponents could have dealt with. If anything its the other way around since Morgoth was huge magnitudes of power greater than Sauron and would have made more sense as a spiritual or godlike foe. Sauron was barely a footnote of effort, compared to Melkor. The lucky 'strike' is again, realism. That and a mix of trying to enforce the idea of clinching victory from almost certain defeat. As with Melkor, Sauron was blinded by his own ego. Which produced a lack of focus and incompetence in battle. Tolkien knew the reality of warfare well, the movie simply tries to convey it in visual form. Its perfect as it is in my opinion, although featuring more of the physical element to Sauron and his breathren would be apt for a telling of the Silmarillion. Alas its too long and awkwardly structured. That and they have been denied rights by the family. Oh well. Treasure what you have already. Its one of a kind.

Rainfeather : Melkor was ORIGINALLY exponentially more powerful than Sauron. But Melkor expended most of his strength on creating monstrous life forms like the dragons and trolls. Creating life is the most difficult and draining thing a Valar can do. It cost so much power that Melkor was permanently weakened, and became less powerful than the spirits of the Sun and Moon. Especially Arien, the spirit of fire that was the Sun. But even badly weakened, Morgoth was still far more powerful than Sauron, who feared his wrath.

I enjoy that portrayal more. Especially when the beginning of the movie, Sauron's physical form with the One Ring was able to be defeated. If he only had a physical form after, his threat isn't as menacing as the viewer can just go, "just go into open combat again and the same could happen". By making his spirit/eye alive and the threat, the urgency of Frodo's journey is more evident. And the idea that he is always "watching" made the journey more thrilling to watch. You need that visual representations in film, in lieu of a backstory/more detail a book can give. The Eye both made him a threat and invincible to the viewer.

Just a point of issue I have at the end, and Im not saying im right, just making an observation. Sauron was correct that nobody would have the will to destroy the ring. Frodo often gets credit with doing so but I point out that in the end he failed to resist and tried to claim the ring for his own. It was golum's intervention that prevented him escaping with the ring, and then golum dies accidentally, also not meaning to destroy the ring. So, at no point does anyone have the will to destroy it, frodo should only get credit with resisting for as long as he did, which is admirable. Anyway, just an observation! Great video!

Interesting detail: Sauron did regret his past choices when he saw the might of Valinor in the War of Wrath. Tolkien said that this regret was real (even if inspired by fear). However, when Eonwë told him to come to Valinor to be judged, it was too much a humiliation for his pride, and he left them and went to East. There it seemed to him that Middle-Earth, especially the east and the south, were neglected by the Valar, and needed him to arrange them and bring order and wealth to the peoples there. So he begun his projects there and, well, his hand slipped a bit, and after a few millenia he was the god-king of the world, titled the Lord of the Earth and the King of Men. This motive - order and prosperity - had been both his original virtue and the cause of his fall to evil. Because Sauron always thought that the best way to bring these things was through power. Therefore Sauron was attracted to Melkor's power, graviating to his corrupting presence. And later on he assumed the role of a tyrant himself.
@Hirungolwe
@Hirungolwe 6 лет назад
Here is the Silmarilion quote (chapter 24): When Thangorodrim was broken and Morgoth overthrown, Sauron put on his fair hue again and did obeisance to E?nw? the herald of Manw?, and abjured all his evil deeds. And some hold that this was not at first falsely done, but that Sauron in truth repented, if only out of fear, being dismayed by the fall of Morgoth and the great wrath of the Lords of the West. But it was not within the power of E?nw? to pardon those of his own order, and he commanded Sauron to return to Aman and there receive the judgement of Manw?. Then Sauron was ashamed, and he was unwilling to return in humiliation and to receive from the Valar a sentence, it might be, of long servitude in proof of his good faith; for under Morgoth his power had been great. Therefore when E?nw? departed he hid himself in Middle-earth; and he fell back into evil, for the bonds that Morgoth bad laid upon him were very strong.

I believe, if Tolkien wrote out more of the stories of the Silmarillion and we get even more details and depth to the charakter many more people would think so. The return of the king, book 6, Mount Doom; "So foot by foot, like small grey insects, they crept up the slope. They came to the path and found that it was broad, paved with broken rubble and beaten ash. Frodo clambered on to it, and then moved as if by some compulsion he turned slowly to face the East. Far off the shadows of Sauron hung; but torn by some gust of wind out of the world, or else moved by some great disquiet within, the mantling clouds swirled, and for a moment drew aside; and then he saw, rising black, blacker and darker than the vast shades amid which it stood, the cruel pinnacles and iron crown of the topmost tower of Barad-dûr. One moment only it stared out, but as from some great window immeasurably high there stabbed northward a flame of red, the flicker of a piercing Eye; and then the shadows were furled again and the terrible vision was removed. The Eye was not turned to them: it was gazing north to where the Captains of the West stood at bay, and thither all its malice was now bent, as the Power moved to strike its deadly blow; but Frodo at that dreadful glimpse fell as one stricken mortally. His hand sought the chain about his neck."

@@DoctorXander Lol, I wouldn't make it that dense. I think, done justice, it can fit into five movies. The first part from The Destruction of the Two Trees to the duel of Fingolfin and Morgoth. Second part is Beren and Luthien. Then Children of Hurin. The Fall of Gondolin The War of Wrath

Sauron has always been one of my favorite characters! He is also a great villain, even though some would say he’s cliche; Which is not fear because Tolkien started the trend of villains who wanted to rule the world!

That's very easy to refute. Stoker's Dracula also wanted to rule the world through his network of henchmen, and the book is older than Tolkien. Robert E. Howard's sagas are full of conquering tyrants, then there is Dr. FuManChu from 1911 or so , and the whole genre of 19th century of "bloody pulp fiction", or "pulp horror stories", cheap, pulp books printed en-masse that were full of dramatic, violent, badly written stories (obsoleted by B-movies when cinema started to be a thing), and those were full of struggle between the Jesuits and the Freemasons, two all-powerful, secretive secret organizations bent on controlling the world. And you must not forget the Illuminati that came even before that, and the Templars.... No, Tolkien certainly did not start it.

Frodo never really destroyed the ring. If it were up to him, the ring would still be in his possesion. Sam is the real hero of the story.

Frodo could carry The Ring since The Shire until Mount Doom, only then he fell to the corruptiom, any other person carrying the Ring would have fallen Way before, as we have seem in their Journey, Gandalf did'int even wanted to Touch it, Aragorn had to fight the Desire, Boromir fell before even touching it, even Galadriel almost Fallen to the Corruptiom, as Faramir too, did'int even let me start with Smeagle, even Sam almost fell to the Corruptiom when he carried The One Ring, he even says that he can not carry It for him, but he can carry him (Frodo) Frodo is The "Strongest" against The One Ring Corruptiom, but even him fell to the Corruptiom
@PeePeeMilk
@PeePeeMilk Год назад
@@Kravenrogue how was Frodo able to stay that strong? Like u said, all those people were corrupted right away. When Frodo found it on the floor in bilbos home, he literally picked it up like it was nothing. Gandalf clearly noticed that too
@Kravenrogue
@Kravenrogue Год назад
@@PeePeeMilk I think its because The One Ring always search for Powerfull ones to corrupt, and Frodo at that moment was next to Gandalf, maybe the ring was focusing on corrupt Gandalf, and that made Frodo almost immune to the "Calling" In every moment Frodo was always close to some one, that maybe the One Ring saw as a more Powerfull person or a more likely person to be Corrupt, for example Frodo offers the Ring to Gandalf, to Aragorn, to Galadriel, to Boromir even, Frodo is always offering The One Ring to other person, maybe the Ring is always trying to go to a more Powerfull Person or more corrupt, I would say that Frodo's lack of skill or Power made him "Powerfull" against The One Ring corruptiom But in The End, even Frodo end up corrupted at Mount Doom, that show that no one is really immune to The One Ring corruptiom

Sauron reminds an awful lot of Loki during the First Age. A shapeshifter and a trickster pretending to be a good friend. I wonder if Loki was one of Tolkien's inspirations for the character.

i don't doubt Tolkien was familiar with the character/stories of Loki; if the similarities were intentional, I can't say; but, I feel certain that Loki influenced the development of Sauron at some level. Tolkienologists might be able to provide references and quotes from letters and other writings....

Who knows? Tolkien seems to take inspiration from many mythologies/religions. The flooding of Numenour = Noah’s Ark Dagor Dagaroth = Ragnarok Sauron = Loki Illuvatar = God Even the moving of the sun across the sky by the Maia Arien, seems familiar to Ra the Egyptian sun god, moving the sun through the sky on his chariot.
