good review! I bought one of these exact same rifles back in 2006, and there is a reason I still have it! easily the most accurate rifle in my safe! sure wish the ammo cost what it did back in 2006 though!

I own this exact very same rifle. It has become my favorite. It is easily a 0.5 inch rifle at 100 yards. This is a .5 MOA rifle in this configuration. I put a silver finished Burris scope on it with silver rings, so it looks cool. I love having the target in my scope, on high magnification and at 100 yds and then seeing the hole appear almost instantly upon pull of the trigger and at the exact spot of the crosshairs, like as if the target was just an arms length away. This rifle really has it all. It is a pure tack driver and handsome looks and the ergos on the stock are a delight. Highly recommended. I would suggest picking one up while you still can.

I have a target dot scope on mine and if the dot is on something, that's where the hole will be. Like magic

😂 everyone on internet shoot 0.5 moa at 100 yards . I have the same rifle since 2012 . No it won’t be 0.5 Moa at 100 yards . I also have CZ455 17 hmr and another Lilja 17HMR . Savage magazine is atrocious with each rattling .

Nice gun my friend. I use the same gun but in blue and with a grey laminate stock. I use the Winchester HV 17 HMR round primarily but it shoots everything pretty well. I use a Nikon Prostaff 4-12 scope. At far range kinda hard to see the little gophers (200 yards or so) but still ok. Wish I had a little more magnification at those times. Love the thumb stock for this purpose and find it very comfy. A little heavy for a "walking gun" but can be done. Get very good results. I am gopher shooting in south Saskatchewan and there are thousands in the fields.

Hey dude, I'm getting the same scope and gun. What ring height did you go with? I'm looking at some medium 1-inch rings from vortex. I wasn't sure if it'd clear the barrel, Thanks!

That ammo clip design is from mossberg. My dads 22 cal. had the same kind. The bolt installation is the same on any of my rifle's. Maybe because i only have savage or lakefield rifle's. Which Savage took over Lakefield quite a few years ago.

Nice review. I have the exact same rifle. I have a Redfield Revenge 4-12x42 scope and a bi-pod on it. It's great fun to shoot. One thing to mention is the stock is pretty heavy. Add the bull barrel, scope and bi-pod and it not a light weight package to hiking in the woods with. Not a problem for me though. Mine is strictly a target gun... so far :-)

I have this rifle in the left-handed configuration. Love the stock, it fits me like a glove. As far as accuracy is concerned it is just fantastic, hole in a hole at 75 yards, could probably do it at 100 yards but I'm not that good. I have an inexpensive scope on it but at 75 to 100 yards it is good enough. Thank god my spotter scope is good because at 75/100 yards those little holes are hard to see 😀.

Older thread I know...however, still very interesting. Just for what it's worth, I have shot several different makers firearms in 17 HMR and have yet NOT TO SEE a few random cracked cases. More so in the neck/shoulder area than in case body. I don't like it, but it seems to be part of shooting the 17 HMR?????? Just for myself....I have settled on the Savage models to consistently shoot more precise than other brands. But this is just my experience and also I have found Hornady brand ammo in 17gr V Max to be the most precise in any brand rifle thus far. Again, just MY experience. All my Savage rifles shoot .500 or better at 100yds with 5 shot group. I actually have the same model you show in the video, the best I can tell. Good luck with all you endeavor and thanks for the nice video...good job my friend.

You might have a batch of Winchester brass that is overly brittle. I ran into the exact same problem using Winchester ammo in .445-70 Govt. caliber. I swithed to Remington brass and no more problems. Brittle brass does exist and I imagine that's what you're experiencing. Hope this helps.

@Stingray8854

Just a thought, you may have gotten hold of a bad batch / lot of those Winchester rounds. I've had occasional, rare few rounds of various brands that have failed to fire, but never had split cases of any brand. I don't get to fire my .17 HMR as often as I would like and I'm certainly not an expert on ammo, but I've probably fired at least a couple thousand rounds of various brands. My rifle seems to "like" the 17 grain V-Max in both the Hornady and Winchester. But anyway, I'd look into the batch and / or lot numbers online to see if there seems to be a trend for split casings. I'm sure several shooting forums are all over it if it's a common issue. That looks like a very nice rifle by the way. Good review.
@Huntinggearguy
@Huntinggearguy 9 лет назад
Stingray8854 Maybe. But, here's an unscientific test: I searched Google for "Winchester 17 HMR" and then the same for CCI and Hornady and let Google's Search Suggest come up to see what other people might be searching for in relation to those phrases. These suggestions are automatically populated by what other people are searching for. CCI's and Hornady's came back normal, this is what came up for Winchester: i.imgur.com/5uzGZR5.jpg Again, completely unscientific, but it may point to a lot more people than just me coming across issues and searching online for other people who might have seen the same thing.

No you got the right one. Do you still have it? My mags come out 1 handed with the gun upright. .323 @ 100 5 shot.. mine likes all ammo but hornady better. Slow down you can do way better with your groups. No you can push those cases out with a cleaning rod.. ive had a few misfires with winchester.. but that was 8 years ago...

By the way, you don't need two hands to get the mag out, use you're middle finger to push the lever, then use you're pointer finger and you're thumb to grab the mag out. It just takes a little while to get used to it.

I had a Hornady 17hmr v-max weld itself to the front of the bolt,on my last A17, that's when I decided to go with a bolt action instead of a semi auto. I went thru 3 semi auto's. The btvss is a tack driver. No problems with the mags. This gun loves cci 17 great jhp .

I have both the Savage 17HMR BTVS and CZ455 in 17HMR Both shoot about the same Pro n con Savage fit n finish is not as nice as CZ , rough wood , not deep enough wood finish Magazine rattling around on the groove clip CZ 455 trigger is not as good as savage accu trigger CZ has lots of creep and I have to install shim to reduce the creep But savage accu trigger is made out of thin stamped metal Again fit and finish is not that good on savage So honestly CZ 455 need extra work for the trigger to be as good as savage Both shoot well CZ 455 is easier on the eye Savage is no slouch But that rattle from cheap magazine really drive me crazy sometimes

My Savage BTVS in 22LR came with very poor craftsmanship. Although the outside of the Boyd's stock was "okay", the inside below the barrel wasn't even sanded, leaving numerous splinters over half an inch long, which can be seen but not sanded without removing the barrel. The barrel and action appear okay visibly, but the trigger guard looks like something you'd find on dollar store toy gun. NOT what I expected for a rifle over five hundred dollars.

I've not had any luck with Winchester rimfire ammunition whether it be .22lr or .17hmr, .22mag. The accuracy is less than acceptable and the reliability is just not up to par. On a particular occasion, out of 50 .17hrm rounds, 10 failed to fire the first, second, sometimes the third time struck with the primer. I've pulled .22lr superX rounds out of a new box with the projectiles laughably seated at various angles. It's sad that most stores that do sell .17 ammo in my area only carry Winchester. (f.-) Hornady is the way to go.
@Huntinggearguy
@Huntinggearguy 9 лет назад
TrevorMyrtleBeach Hornady is the way to go if you can find it! I've recently only been able to find Winchester and Remington 17 HMR. I pick up CCI and Hornady whenever I find it.

+MegaBait56 I love Boyd's stocks, they really class up a rifle. In the Savage BTVS's case, I believe it worked out to be cheaper to buy it than to buy the heavy barrel stainless 17 HMR with a plastic stock and then upgrade.

yup, your right. Savage told me that they have a deal with Boyd's on the phone when i ordered parts from them. i have a model 11 Savage .308 with a acu. trigger. i bought same thumbhole stock as you have. took over a month and bunch of emails and calls but i got the stock and fit like a glove. cause it's a .308 i had my gunsmith bed the action in the stock and free float the bbl. now it's a tack driver. good luck with your rifle she's a beauty.

Stephen do you remember how long it took to break in your barrel? Only 125rnds so far but with clean, cold barrel I hit 1"left with 1st shot, 1/2-1/4 " left with 2nd shot , next 3 leave a jagged hole on bullseye. Stays that way till barrel heats up after another 10 shots . I don't really clean it , just run a dry swab before putting it up .

Perfect Annihilation I wouldn't say they're a serious problem overall, but they can be problematic in some areas. At the place where I hunt, they're in cattle and horse pastures and the holes are responsible for the odd broken leg. Because it's pest control, we don't take the time to skin/eat them.
