Here we're gonna bring back the Savage TPH in 243 to The Hide for a bit more shooting and testing. This was one of the more popular rifles I did here on the channel and wanted to freshen up the review with an update along with better video quality, lol. In this part 1 we talk about the features of the rifle and get a baseline with some factory ammo at 110yrds. Stay tuned for part2 as we take a look at some upgrades for this rifle and finally how it shoots!

Those savage medium contour barrels have got to be one of the best kept secrets in the gun world.

You’re going to shoot your barrel out shooting so quickly. A good rule of thumb is to not fire a shot when the barrel is too hot to comfortably touch with your hand

I’ve taken a few caribou with my savage 111 243 and it is a very nice gun to have! 7:15 there was not an ejection failure it just hit your windage dial! Wish I bought one with a heavy barrel but I love my 243!

I went back and noticed that too. It ejected, It just bounced back in after hitting the scope. :)

I have one in 6.5 creedmoor and it is very accurate with reloads. Some of my best where close to 1/2" group at 100 yards....

Great results with the lighter pills. My .223 Savage 10FP began key-holing the 55 grain Hornady SuPerformance loads at 200 yards. But my rifle prefers the heavy 75-grain Black Hills (reman) Match. That Savage does look nice with it's medium profile barrel. Thanks for sharing.
@TheHide
@TheHide 6 лет назад
Yea it does tend to favor the lighter grain stuff from what Ive seen so far. Ive got some 70 SMKs im hoping will shoot good once I start working up handloads for it. Stay tuned for the upgrade video! Thanks for watching buddy.

Man I’m digging the microphone at the table! I have the savage 11vt in 243 and loves the old hornady 105g Amax bullets in my hand loads and doesn’t mind the nosler rdf heavy bullets either. Thanks for the video man.
@TheHide
@TheHide 6 лет назад
Ha ha thanks, I just hope it helps everyone hear me better. Its kind of a cheap way of doing it, but if it helps its all good. Yea I tell ya I really like the Nosler projectiles, Ive had nice results with them also.. Thanks for watching!

If you have $260 laying around you should check out the savage 12fv. They come with a nice rebate and end up being a very good value for a rifle with a heavy barrel, accutrigger, and alright stock that is available in 6.5CM or 308.
@TheHide

Yea they are a great rifle and hard to beat for the price! Thanks for watching!

*I have the special order version of this rifle in 22-250 Rem. 9.5:1 fast twist barrel. It shoots sub MOA with 65 & 70 gr. Sierra's & Speers 70 gr. Hotcore. Loves Nosler's 64 gr. flat base too. What it doesn't like is anything under 50 grains. They will literally blow apart 25 yds. from the muzzle..Try some RL 19 or some IMR 7828 with some of those heavier pills. You just might impress yourself.*

Mine loves 95s and 100s. It wouldn't group at all with 58gr-70gr.

Being a big fan myself of the 243 Winchester I’ve watched the Varmint loads come on line, and iam really not impressed by them. Your Savage is beautiful rig, love the desert tan camo paint job. For me bullets weights from 80- 100 Grs will do anything that’s needs to be done with the 243. If i every want to go Varminting i have a Savage Model FV with a 26 inch barrel for those little critters.

Curious, I had an out of the box Stevens 200, .243. factory taper 22 inch barrel, no accutrigger, and after break-in, shot a .38 inch group (center to center) with a Tasco 3X9X32. I was using Hornady Custom 75 gr HP. rated at 3400 fps. If the model 10 I just got wont do that I'll be very disappointed. :)
@TheHide
@TheHide 4 года назад
Yea id say with a decent load it should be able to handle that. I sure wish they still made those Stevens rifles, great rifle for the price. Thanks for watching!

Try letting your barrel cool. Shooting so many rounds in a row will not help accuracy. I shoot 3 and let cool. Just my opinion.

Compared to a regular 22 inch barrel. How much heavier is this gun? Do you think it would still be comfortable to carry around for possibly deer hunting since the .243 is a acceptable deer cartridge?
@TheHide
@TheHide 5 лет назад
In its factory configuration like seen in the video I think it would be a perfect hunting rifle. The weight is not bad at all. Given a proper scope choice that didnt weigh to much. Thanks for watching!

I am thinking of getting into 243. You guys run a 22 Nlr match in ky?
@TheHide

Do it, 243 is one of if not the most underrated calibers.. No I don't do anything in Ky. Thanks for watching!

I've actually been finding that Superformance has been a very unreliable performer. the last 3 calibers I've shot it in haven't produced anything smaller than 2 moa

I will say in a couple rifles Ive tried it in, it did not shoot well at all. Just goes to show every rifle and barrel is different I guess. Thanks for watching!

My experiences also. All my calibers suck with those. I use Hornady bullets in my handloads and they work great. Superformance factory ammo sux.

What's the difference in that and the Model 10 Predator Hunter Max1 other than fluted barrel on the model 10? ---and I'm thinking my Model 10 has a 24 in. barrel
@TheHide

Only difference is the barrel. Action and trigger setup are the same. The stock also may be different as well. Thanks for watching!

Don't go by the demo. For example ,I shoot well from sandbags, but can't get a rifle still on a bipod. I have a Model 700 .223 SPS varmint With a Vortex 6-24-50 and it had virtually no stock bedding at all, and my stock Stevens Model 200 .223 and a .243 of the same make, out-shot it with a cheap Tasco 3X9X32.

Good test I think very informative yeah a few upgrades probably wouldn't hurt that rifle but for what it is it's a good rifle I totally agree about the magazine now my personal, I wouldn't buy one because if you're going to restock it you got to consider the magazine release and it has to be pain
@TheHide
@TheHide 6 лет назад
Yea the mag release is something to think about, but its no more trouble than any of the others as long as you get a stock made for it. Now trying to get one to work with a top bolt release stock is way more trouble than its worth. Yea it will be fun to see how this one comes together, thanks for watching!

How much did the setup cost u
@TheHide
@TheHide 6 лет назад
As you seen it on the bench the rifle was 575 and the scope was 130, then a few bucks for the cheap bipod and a set of mid priced rings. Not bad at all for a very capable rifle. Thanks for watching..
