My 99 is a 1950 vintage in 300 Savage and I absolutely love it. No scope, a Marbles tang peep sight is my preferred equipment on lever guns to keep them trim and easy to carry and good for older eyes. It's in fantastic condition and it's definitely a keeper. I've always been a lever gun fan being lefthanded it's always been more practical for me. And growing up in south west Missouri it's a perfect hunting rifle for me, I'll be 60 years old next month.
My dad bought me a 300 Savage 99 when I was 11 years old(still have it) one thing wrong with your set up ,if you are going to mount a scope use one without a big objective lens, the higher the scope the worse the cheek weld. Two things about these rifles some had head space problems, all of them needed trigger work.If you get the trigger down to about 2 lbs it will shoot better!(The best scope I found for a Model 99 was a K3 weaver,3 power being all you need for a 200 yard rifle!)
Dam good for a gun that age, a 300 savage makes a very good hunting tool,I live in south africa, regret every day I sold mine, want to get another one, hope the 300 savage will make a big return, long live the 300 savage, very good cartridge ,excellent rifle design, hats off to Arthur savage.
my 1950 99 savage shoots tighter than that but i also reload my own ammo, it will literally shoot 2 in the same hole and the 3rd shot will cut out on the edge of the hole at 100 yards... best shooting gun i've ever seen
Nice gun. I have one in 250-3000. One thing not mentioned very often is that they have controlled round feed. I consider mine the Best Coyote Gun in the World. 😊
Good job, I own the same 99 from 1941, shoot reformed 308 brass also with 150gr Hornady sp, my old savage is more accurate than some of my higher end bolt rifles!🇨🇦
If sizing 308's t0 300 sav make sure you check the neck thickness of the resized cases. Often after seating a new bullet the outside neck diameter will be too large. I had a savage 99 accidently fired trying to force around into the chamber before I started reaming the necks. My dad's old 300 savage probably has more miles on a horse and more deer fall before it than most people can imagine. I still use it for occasionally to honor my Dad.
I have four 99s 250-3000,300,358 feather weights and 303 1899 26" barrel. I wouldn't sell them for any price. I can get 1/2 groups no problem at 100 meters😊
Even the well-used 99s are more in price than new gun prices. Also try to find a used 99 is good luck on that! Someone had to die in a family and the kids don't want dads gun so they sell it to find these 99s.
@@finallyfriday. I was in the Tigard Oregon Cabala's gun room last week when a gun room employee as walking over to the glass door gun cabinet to put up a Savage 99 just taken in - one person asked is that going up for sale - yes said the employee and not even ask the price that person said I will buy it - that is how fast a Savage 99 last! / sold for $950! I no longer have any interest in other guns to hunt with them since mastering custom building AR 10s in WSM magnum cartridges, but I still can enjoy a well-made rifle or just shot them for fun.
Lovely gun Micheal , the 99’s were certainly ahead of their time.. You did fine great shooting with those handloads as well , what more could you want a hunting rifle to do.. About your narration however , you need to work on not using the pauses”ah” so much , it was distracting and took away from the overall video imho that is..
I have allot of good scoped guns but i have my grandads old 300sav iron sights 1935 model. That's what im using first day! Shot it at 50yrds right in the ball park😊
Lead sleds are not very good to shoot for acurracy ! They won’t let the rifle recoil properly ! How many long range shooters use one ? Zero ! I have heard if you put a tennis ball between the lead sled and the rifle butt, it helps but have not tried it yet ?? Some model 99’s really shoot great, sub MOA RIFLES, Gunblue has one ! Mine might be but not off a lead sled ! Just FYI ;-)
100 yds with that scope? Should have been near touching each other. I'm 67, and I tape a 1/16" peep sight made of a 1"square of electrical tape onto my glasses. No scope. Prints within 1-1/4" easy. 1937 EG in .300. Check that set up. Those rifles are as accurate as most bolt actions.
I would start by buying a Nosler or Hornady reloading manual and both companies have help lines that are manned by very knowledgeable people. Of course the initial investment is kind of high.
Buy a rcbs master kit that comes with everything needed , I bought a digital caliper and scale . When you have everything including brass it is pretty cheap and nothing at all difficult
i use a lee case length cutter in 300 savage on the 308 win cases to get them to 300 sav length then i spray them with hornady one shot case lube spray, them run them up in the 300 sav decap / full length sizing die to reform the shoulder and length of the neck of the 308 to a 300 sav size. and then use your cutter once again to trim to 300 sav length because the case stretches when you resize them. deburr it and it's ready to go.. just remember to color the case with permeant marker or mark it some how so it doesn't get mixed in with 308 win, because the bottom of the case still reads 308 win.
