I ferment oat groats, spelt, sorghum, barley, millet, and buckwheat mixed together in a large crock with a lid. The mix of grains makes it a more complete feed with the proper protein percentage for laying hens, as well as vitamins. All these grains are fairly inexpensive in bulk. I grow some of them myself. When I scoop out the “mash”, I measure it out so that each chicken can have up to 6 ounces. I add oyster shell and granite grit, flaxseed, and kelp to the mash just before putting it in their feeders. I use multiple feeders so that none is spilled on the ground and all the chickens get a fair share in spite of the pecking order. The girls also get plenty of pasture, bugs, and vegetable greens - and the occasional mouse they catch. If you feed this way, you don’t need to buy any commercial feed.

Can you give this mix you described to baby chicks?
@Pipsqwak
@Pipsqwak Год назад
@@mariegraf2896 Yes, but I would coarse-grind the grains first and make sure that the overall protein content is at least 16% for chicks, since they need more protein for growth Use chick grit in the feed (small amounts), and don't add any oyster shell until the chicks start to lay eggs at about 18 weeks of age. Make sure your chicks are vaccinated and kept quarantined from any older birds for a full six weeks if you do not use medicated commercial feed. Both chicks and adult birds should always have food available rather than being fed at set times.
@MrDavew402
@MrDavew402 Год назад
I would love to be able to do that, get oat groats, spelt, sorghum, barley, millet, and buckwheat. But there is no granary around me. I can tell you know what you are talking about. Witch of those you mentioned, will they get protein from, now that they don't receive layer pellets ?
@Pipsqwak
@Pipsqwak Год назад
@@MrDavew402 You can buy the grains in bulk online (usually in 25-lb. amounts) from multiple sources. Oats and spelt are great protein sources, but my girls also get plenty of greens and bugs from out in the pastures. Many insects are more than 50% protein. The fermentation of the grains makes them more digestible and makes their nutrients more available for the chickens' bodies to use. They also need calcium grit and stone grit to digest grains and insects and provide a slow-release form of calcium. Be careful about giving too much calcium to a rooster. Roosters need protein, but most layer formulas have too much calcium for males and they can get painful gout and kidney problems.

Also, I live in Switzerland and our local feed store (Landi) doesn't have much of a selection of grains like you get there in the UK. Do you have a website or any ideas where barley for instance would be sold? I'm not from Europe so this has been an adventure finding what I need for my chickens and ducks. Thanks!

Thanks I am desperate to get into a routine with them. I only have 5 girls. I wanted to get them onto kitchen scraps and they love brown bread.i know tho is not good for them. What would you recommend? They are 13 weeks yet..getting bored with the growers.. Morning..barley..and water Starve them from growers for the rest of the day.. Early evening.. growers...and water..before bedtime? Then at 18 weeks..replace growers with layers and carry on with the fermented barley? Also... can they eat the dead flies and wasps? Don't they carry disease?

They are very aggressive when you feed them. That's because they aren't fed enough quantity or to seldom daily. If you stop your "fermentation" process, which is actually germination, and let the seeds grow for 7 days you will be able to feed them fodder which is far more cost effective and nutritious. 4" of green fodder in 8 days. Watch them tear that up! All you need to do is keep the root system moist. Trust me you will be far happier.

@sockeyetrout8143
@sockeyetrout8143 2 года назад
I think the only way to save it for later is to dry it out. you can store it dry basically free. anything else is going to cost money to store it. dont worry the chemicals are in there just missing the water. well good enough. if you get the food for free why worry. just dry it out and store it in boxes bags anything just keep mice and rats out of it. and other animals. you must secure it. a metal 50 gallon bucket with huge black bag would keep it off the metal and clean. conrector babs I think they come in 50 gallons. you can sell your free stuff to me. i will pay cash on delivery to new england. hahahaha. you got it made.

I never entirely throw all the water away, I keep using it for the fermentation process. Kept in a warm place, the grain only takes a couple of days to fully ferment. You can add more grain to older grain. If it ferments too much I'm guessing too sour they avoid it somewhat. It depends on temperatures mostly. Faster in summer. I'll rinse the grain in some fresh water if it seems too sour. Hardly ever any such problems though.
